any NCSU fan who claims that the UNC-Duke rivalry is stronger than NCSU-UNC deserves to be expelled
1/30/2007 11:14:11 PM
UNC works really hard to pretend like they care more about Duke than they do about us. I dunno.Didn't lots of teams used to be black/gold? Not in the ACC, but weren't they the most popular team colors for a long, long time?
1/30/2007 11:21:33 PM
^^ riiiiiiiiiiiiight.... let me guess, its just a creation of ESPN right?[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 11:25 PM. Reason : d]
1/30/2007 11:24:54 PM
^^^it wasnt in the 70s and 80s but it sure as hell is nowits a product of consistently competitive games and a moderately even W/L for each team...Id love to see us get back to that caliber but right now we're not there...you can be a State fan and admit that cause if not you're just fooling yourself[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 11:30 PM. 1/30/2007 11:29:34 PM
I would say it was in the 60s and 80s
1/30/2007 11:31:13 PM
yeah i guess...but definitely moreso in the past than now
1/30/2007 11:33:11 PM
1/30/2007 11:34:50 PM
I meant Duke/UNC was during all the time after the 50s except the 70s when Duke was down for a bit^ ha, you make it sound like a temporary thing... [Edited on January 30, 2007 at 11:36 PM. Reason : d]
1/30/2007 11:34:51 PM
im pretty sure state/unc was bigger til basically the late 70s
1/30/2007 11:38:04 PM
nope. I kept hearing this from State people so I decided to do some research. State dominated until the late 50s but after Case they dropped off (aside from the years right around the championship years of course) and UNC/Duke were the ones usually going after the ACC title and most importantly recruits, especially in NYC and Philly. Duke faded in the late mid 70s and didnt really come back til the mid 80s
1/30/2007 11:40:39 PM
but duke hadnt had the national success that they do now...they were still viewed as "the red blue headed stepchild" of the big 3 regardless of how they playeda few years back when doherty was at the helm the big rivalry was still unc/duke even though state/duke wouldve been the two best teams of the group[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 11:46 PM. Reason : .]
1/30/2007 11:45:50 PM
well, I agree with that, but that doesnt have anything to do with the rivalry...rivalrys are usually for conference titles not national titles^ but that was such a short time period. If they had sucked ass for a decade then obviously the rivalry would have dropped[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 11:47 PM. Reason : d]

everyone I have talked to and everything I have read has said that it Duke/UNC really started with the recruiting battles in the 60s, especially with Heyman
1/30/2007 11:54:59 PM
the best games competition wise do not always mean the biggest rivalry. now i wasn't there, but i'd have to imagine that it took a bit for duke/unc to really take over. probably didn't happen the instant that the stats indicate.and did i mention the founding of ESPN?
1/30/2007 11:58:41 PM
hahaha, big bad ESPN and its well thought out conspiracies
1/31/2007 12:01:04 AM
my grandparents lived in durham forever and im just going off what they said (rip )
1/31/2007 12:09:47 AM
apparently they didnt live foreverbada ching
1/31/2007 12:18:12 AM
yeah but they were at least alive to see the inception of the acc and follow it throughout the said decades
1/31/2007 12:21:14 AM
the state-unc rivalry began before sports here, back when state was supposed to be opened. They money was raised for an agricultural school to be built, but instead chapel hill took the money and only added a few courses in agriculture. There were lots bitter about it, and people like Pullen decided to fund a new college, which became State College.at least thats the overall summary my freshman engineering teacher told us is how the rivalry began
