Last night my digital cable box (no DVR or anything, just plain vanilla digital cable) kicked off and the time display started counting down in hexadecimal characters. After ten minutes, I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Same thing. I gave up and just let it go.

This morning, the time was back, and now it's working fine again. Anyone ever had this happen?

Its a firmware update. The countdown is a progress indicator. Once updated it would have automatically rebooted to the new firmware.
