Pettitte and Wang are gonna have big years. I think Philip Hughes could be another Justin Verlander if they gave him a chance to make the club, but they are trying to ease him into the rotation to keep his innings under control.
1/18/2007 12:44:34 PM
GO YANKEES!Can't wait to be back in the stands!!!
1/18/2007 1:08:07 PM
If and more likely when we sign Clemmens it will sure up the starting rotation significantly. I think once that happens The Yanks will have one of the deepest staffs in MLB :-)
1/18/2007 1:20:39 PM
i'm so happy the Yanks got Pettitte back. IMO, he should have never left to go to the Astros; and Wang will def have a big year as long as he doesn't get injured. A-Rod hopefully gets his head outta his ass this season and actually steps up to his potential, unlike that embarrassment of last season. and Jeter, what can we say, he was robbed of being MVP IMO. but, viva la Yankees!
1/18/2007 1:29:55 PM
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT PAVANO WILL DO THIS YEAR!alsodoesnt hughes have shoulder injury questions? he's the top rated pitching prospect by BA though.. ahead of Homer Bailey and Mike Pelfrey (who will be in the Mets rotation).[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 1:34 PM. Reason : x]
1/18/2007 1:32:28 PM
Lets Go Yankees! Its only January but i cannot wait till April!
1/18/2007 2:24:40 PM
^^ Hmm...that's the first I've heard of injury concerns about Hughes. Can't rule it out, of course. I'll tell you one thing, though: it's really refreshing to talk about what the Yankees are going to do with a young arm, for a change.
1/18/2007 2:27:54 PM
Hughes has never had a shoulder/arm injury. They held back his innings because they want to ease him into throwing 175+ innings, unlike the cubs did with Prior/Wood
1/18/2007 2:30:20 PM
Here is what I see with the Yankees rotation this year:Mussina - solid, sould have another good season (3.50 ERA, 15-16 Wins)Pettitte - getting old. Last year with Astros: 14-13, 4.20 ERA. Not bad, but not some world beater that some on this thread are making him out to be.Wang - last season could have been a fluke. Doesnt strike anyone out and could come back to earth some this year. Should be a solid #3 though, but threw 200+ innings and recent history on young pitchers with that many innings is that their follow-up year is not good.Pavano - will likely get hurt and is a waste of money. No idea who you're #5 will be right now, but Hughes could be great if he's ready. And if the Yanks do get Clemens it will only be for 2/3s of the season (although it would make the rotation much stronger). It is definitely a better rotation than most, but I don't know if it's enough to get them over the hump to another title. I like their chances better than my Braves though
1/18/2007 2:49:47 PM
I don't think anyone is expecting Pettitte to be a world-beater this season, but you have to consider that if Pettitte can put up a 4.20 ERA again, he'll be good for another fourish wins. The Astros' offense was HORRIBLE all three years he was there. The Yanks' offense should be all right again. As for Wang, he doesn't strike anyone out because he's a sinkerballer. He's a ground-ball pitcher. Yes, he's young, and of course you're right, it could have been a fluke, but I still like his chances to be a SOLID pitcher this year--good for another 15-17 wins. You're right, though, man. Pavano's a huge question mark; Hughes--who knows if he's REALLY ready for the murderer's row that is the entire AL East. You've got to figure getting rid of Johnson was part of clearing the way for Clemens, though.Regardless, I'm cautiously optimistic.
1/18/2007 3:38:41 PM
^ Regardless of the how good or crappy the pitching is this year, that lineup will get them into the playoffs again.
1/18/2007 3:51:47 PM
Igawa, i dont think will be very good. Pavano, if he has a decent spring, will be pitching in somewhere like Seattle or Detroit.Rotation as I see it:Wang: Good for 15-18 wins, 3.80-4.00 ERA fine for that lineupPettitte: had a great second half, should win 16 games with the yanks this yearMoose: 13-15 wins, will likely have groin problems again. he's getting olderPavano: If healthy he's a 12-14 win pitcher. However, expect this spot to be a mixture of young guys, Karstens, Rasner, Hughes, SanchezIgawa: an NL west pitcher. Will be in AAA by June. Big hole in the rotation.
1/18/2007 3:55:35 PM
That hole will be filled by the Rocket !!
1/18/2007 4:24:30 PM
i never post much on TWW anymore, but got to post here.GO YANKS .... Quit screwing around and handle your business.

AMERCAN LEAGUE BASEBALL YANKEES! Here is my EXPERT OPINION!Yankees are finding that perhaps they should use their crazy cool quick gaijin players from lower league. They will not need the JAESIN JIAMBI and the DERIK JITERU this year! watch for 2nd place!
1/19/2007 12:36:57 PM
What an insightful and enlightening commentary.Good contribution.
1/19/2007 12:39:04 PM
a thannk you to you more EXPERT OPINIONSNew York American Yankees will slowly lose the power of the strong arm! that is right, the pitching is not to be there this year! they need to trade for a crazy gaijin like the TREAVERU HOFFUMAN!
1/19/2007 12:49:20 PM
Again when not if but when they get Clemmens they will have the deepest staff in the majors....in my opinion !!

I wonder when we will sign "The Rocket" ?
1/27/2007 7:08:12 PM
Just a little news update from the best team in MLB....News: Melky Cabrera will skip the Caribbean World Series at the Yankees' request so he can rest up for the season.
1/31/2007 10:09:14 AM
^That's great and all, but what does that have to do with the Red Sox?
1/31/2007 10:30:46 AM
Ha ha ha....good response....Well it means that he will be more rested during the regular season to do more damage vs Redsox pitching :-)
1/31/2007 10:33:21 AM
The Yankers are the most expensive mediocre baseball team in history. When will the boss learn that he can't keep throwing money at it. He has destroyed their farm system.
1/31/2007 10:40:39 AM
OK where I will agree they should have a couple more world championships over the past 5 years with all the money they spent....They are far from mediocre !! Mediocre teams don't win the east year after year after year after year.....but again I will agree they should have won the big one more....but mediocre....not even close !![Edited on January 31, 2007 at 10:47 AM. Reason : .]
1/31/2007 10:46:45 AM
If they were doing this in Tampa Bay with a 50 million dollar payroll you could sing their praises. But with a 200+ million dollar payroll you have to do more than just make the playoffs then flame out. With the players they are able to buy they should make the playoffs by default. Just doing the minimum makes them mediocre in my book.
1/31/2007 10:50:24 AM
Like I said....I agree they should have won more....All or most Yankees fans like myself would agree, and are dissapointed with the lack of championships !! The comment was made that they are mediocre....the team they put on the field is not mediocre....over priced....yes....Over paid....yes !!...Mediocre....not a chance !!
1/31/2007 10:55:34 AM
It's like this... If I go to Outback I have a certain expectation for the $15-$20 I pay for a steak. They have a pretty good steak. Now if I go to Ruth's Chris and pay 50-60 dollars for a steak it better be damn good. That same great steak at Outback would be average at Ruth's Chris. That may not be the best analogy in the world but to me the Yankers have been average for the past several years. They have great talent but not great teams. If the Boss didn't keep throwing money at the problem they would fall off tremendously. That farm system isn't what it used to be. I yearn for the days of a salary cap in baseball.
1/31/2007 11:18:45 AM
Here's your Yankees farm system sucks agruement....or shall we say lack thereof..http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove06/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=2742549Also Yankee Stadium will be hosting the 2008 All Star game! Its the last season that they'll be playing there. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2749252
1/31/2007 11:29:13 AM
jsc33 - 1.) I agree that the best thing for MLB as a whole would be a salary cap....2.) If baseball teams were Steak places you would have a valid argument....but they aren't...so it is not apples to apples. 3.) Let me be clear....although My Yankees are have the highest salary in the MLB by light years....they are by far not the only team practicing spending zillions of $$ to frame up their team. Look at the Mets, Redsox, and Dodgers...only a few teams do not practice this kind of buying frenzy baseball......and until they institute a salary cap in baseball it will sadly continue. 4.) If we take your argument about Steak places to heart I guess that would make the Redsox and Mets the Golden Corral of Base Ball right ? 5.) All this talk about Steak is making me hungry and it's lunch time.....out

^The point is that they don't develop their own players as well as they used to. I didn't realize that people have them ranked in the top ten again but you can't argue that it's been down for quite some time.^^Actually they would be more along the lines of Angus Barn. It's true that there are other teams spending a lot of money but the Yanks are in a league of their own when it comes to buying players.. Also there is an Outback Steakhouse overlooking left field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh so baseball teams can in fact be a steak place... They spent 78 million more than Boston ( or approx 7 million per game in the standings). 134 million made them exactly one game better than Minnesota. The two teams in the ALCS last year combined had a payroll 54 million dollars less than the Yankees.By the way I don't hate the Yankees. I'm not a fan of the way they do things. I feel it's bad for baseball in general... and while it's impressive to see their lineup.. the teams doing it the right way have been coming out on top lately.2006 team salaries1.
