1/17/2007 9:35:45 PM
^^^^a 1st gen. 12v cummins or a 2wd 2nd gen. cummines 12v. maybe a base model high mileage 4wd if you look hard enough.a navistar IDI ford will be cheaper, but not as good of a truck/motor.[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 9:36 PM. Reason : .][Edited on January 17, 2007 at 9:36 PM. Reason : .]

1/17/2007 9:41:21 PM
i actually wanted vinyl seats but couldn't get them in the package w/ power win./locks so i had to settle with cloth seats w/ leather trim. oh well. i'm gonna love the full floor rubber though. to hell with carpet.

^^yeah, a ram. what you posted is junk.^yeah, rubber is where it's at. that's what my ram has. my ford is covered with a nicely fitted thick clear plastic from an interior shop.
1/17/2007 9:44:48 PM

^^^^^ my buddies dad has one of those mid 90s chevys diesels. cant remember the exact year. that shit has like 250k on it and it still runs great[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 9:51 PM. Reason : .]

STFU you still have no credibility in here
1/17/2007 9:53:54 PM
6.5 isn't a bad motor AS LONG AS YOU DON'T ABUSE IT.By abuse it I mean drive it anywhere close to hard.Of course, I have a friend that has a '95 dually with the 6.5, and he pulls a big travel trailer with it (and at other times a loaded car trailer), and it's in great shape. He has the 4L80 tranny and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Truck gets MAD mileage. But it's nowhere as good as the Duramax, and not even in the same league as the Cummins.
1/17/2007 9:55:57 PM
so whats the final consensus on best diesel? cummins? what model years and brand in particular should we look at? whats like the best used buy for diesel trucks?[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 9:57 PM. Reason : f]
1/17/2007 9:56:41 PM
can i turbo the ford 7.3???
1/17/2007 10:03:17 PM
If I could afford a Duramax, it would be one of my two picks. The other (and first) naturally would be the Cummins in the Dodge. And the Dodge? The new 3500HD rolling chassis/cab with the 6.7 Cummins would be my choice. With a custom fabbed aluminum diamond plate flatbed/toolbox combo. I'd be all over that shit.Oh...with the G56 6 speed too.And Joel...you CAN turbo a 7.3, but you do need to turn up the pump for it to really matter. Turboing a diesel is easy.[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 10:07 PM. Reason : yeppers]
1/17/2007 10:07:01 PM
don't get me wrong, i love the cummins. i would have gotten a dodge if the duramax wasn't mated to this:
1/17/2007 10:12:09 PM
i mean, ive driven a 7.3 rollaback before... and it was loud loose and slow. not too short on power though, i imagine the same engine in a reg cab pickup might be a different storyi hate to admit it, but i always liked the interiors on those old ford trucks... paging Poe87
1/17/2007 10:13:57 PM
^^LBZ is....? 6.0L v8 gas ?
1/17/2007 10:20:45 PM
1/17/2007 10:24:07 PM
cummins is the best motor on the market, and always has been. others have come close, but never really conquered.the "best" buy in diesels is really probably a ford powerstroke. they are just so much cheaper used than cummins, and have close to the same power stock. not quite as reliable though, and definitely not as tuneable for cheap. if you're buying new, cummins imo.joel, i sold a 92 ford ext. cab 2wd 7.3 IDI w/ an ATS turbo about a year ago for only $2500. deals are out there...[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 10:41 PM. so whats the word on the ford V6 twin turbo'd diesel.. i hear its gonna be in the f150 next year (?)
1/17/2007 10:44:30 PM
i think detroit diesels are better in off road apps Skidders, tractors and so on i think i have ran both cummins in a 87 treefarmer skidder and a detoit in a timberjack and the detroit was much better motor but then this is not in a truck i might be off topic and out of cat but i dont care im drunk and dont have to work tomoorw
1/17/2007 10:45:59 PM
didn't the allison autos shit themselves for a while ?
1/17/2007 10:46:29 PM
^^detroit made junk for gm. weak and unreliable motors. ^yes.[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 10:53 PM. Reason : .]
1/17/2007 10:53:06 PM
mabee for GM but that 453 timber jack would pull that treefarmer backswords winch to winch ( both had front ends about 6 ft in the air)and they were both 12 ton skidders but it would run way higher rmps for a diesel motor and it would fire up better in cold wether too [Edited on January 17, 2007 at 11:18 PM. Reason : we going to put one in the big blue]
1/17/2007 11:16:53 PM
yeah, they do make pretty good commercial stuff. i was just saying what they've made for 1500/2500/3500 gm trucks.
1/17/2007 11:21:48 PM
niceenjoy the new ride
1/17/2007 11:23:05 PM
o yea that fucker would run! we tugged with them for about 20 mins me and my old boss it was funny shit! the truck came into the lot and there are 2 skidders pullin it off front ends like 6 ft in the air big smiles on are faces lol good times
1/17/2007 11:24:34 PM
silly question, but does anyone make a diesel that'd fit in a 1st gen 4runner?
1/18/2007 12:20:02 AM
what about one of them 3 cylinders? might not give you much power but alot of torQ.
1/18/2007 12:41:11 AM
4bt maybe? it might be too heavy. i'm sure zxappeal or BigBlueRam will be able to tell you. maybe the diesel that came in the liberty for awhile, or maybe the 3.0 bluetec the grand cherokee will be getting would be possibilities also?[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 12:43 AM. Reason : .]

4bt is a 4 banger cummins, and very popular for smaller vehicles. basically just a smaller version of the 6bt you'll find in a dodge truck and other vehicles.it would make a nice swap for a 4 runner. personally, if i was swapping another 4 runner it'd be a 7mget. those fit nicely also, bolt up to stock yota stuff, and have plenty of aftermarket go fast goodies. if you're interested, i can put you in touch with a guy that sells complete running/driving frito lay trucks with 4bt's/th400's for pretty cheap.
1/18/2007 1:34:31 AM
nice

1/18/2007 1:21:26 PM
the turbo inline fits in that tiny engine bay ?
1/18/2007 1:42:04 PM
dude you'll love it, the LBZ is STRONG... way stronger than any of the powerchokes I've driven (that haven't been modded). the Ally is crisp and the ability to manually shift it is nice. I"ve always loved cummins smaller motors, but their heavy duty stuff is garbage compared to D/D's. I wish that D/D would have made a better smaller motor. Rumor is that dodge may be going away from the cummins in future years and going with the overall company's in house engine which would be D/D. I heard the higher ups with DaimlerChrysler are putting the pressure on to stay in house versus going outside and buying the competitors products.Let me know what kind of mileage you are getting as I've noticed since I've hit 10K mine has started going up.

So what do you Duramax guys tow with your trucks and how often?

Congrads on the new truck. Hope you have alot of fun with it man.
1/18/2007 8:48:28 PM
mine basically to tow my boat, it's way overkill, but I like having the power and comfort to know that I can go where ever i want and not have to worry about if the truck can make it. I also don't have to upgrade trucks if I upgrade boats, nor if I have to tow anybody elses boat. We are also looking at getting a 5th wheel camper in the next year or two. I know mine's overkill for what I do, but I like having that comfort level. It gets towed to the lake, 60 miles round trip once a week during the season. This year we're going to Chattanooga, Atlanta area and possibly to either Lake Cumberland in KY or Lake Wallenpack (sp?) in PA
