...and I'm debating on giving up that futile effort.Other options:NP435 ? I don't know if the NV4500/Cummins bellhousing will bolt up to it. I've heard rumors about the input shaft being too short. Anybody know anything about this? Didn't think so.SM465. I would love to throw the Muncie in there, and the hot ticket is to get the tranny/bellhousing out of one of the breadtrucks with the 4BT Cummins. Now to find one...I would really love to have overdrive (and even double overdrive; can you say Gear Vendors?) with a low first gear, though. Anybody know where a used NV might be found?

TH400
1/17/2007 7:48:27 PM
Son, I already have the best three speed automatic ever built, Cummins-duty no less.TorqueFlite 727 is a better transmission, hands down. But I want a lower first gear, and at least lockup (or direct engagement) in high gear. Two things the 727 does not have, unfortunately.

Break something or time for an upgrade?[Edited on January 17, 2007 at 7:57 PM. Reason : mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm]
1/17/2007 7:56:16 PM
lolget the 6 speed manual
1/17/2007 7:56:36 PM
Yeah. Right. Cheapest one I've seen yet is 2 grand.^^time for upgrade, Dave...
1/17/2007 7:59:16 PM
the 6 speed is like a foot longer isn't it ? or maybe 18 inches?
1/17/2007 8:01:13 PM
I doubt it's THAT much longer, though it is indeed longer.
1/17/2007 8:01:59 PM
i picked up my remanufactured nv4500 for a decent price comparatively. i believe it was around $1100. they can be found for cheaper used, but good luck to get one less than 600-800.a gas one would work for you also if you found a cheap one, you'd just need to source the correct bellhousing. the output is 23 spline vs. 29 spline though. not a huge deal unless you get crazy with it.the cummins/nv4500 bellhousing will bolt to the np435, but as you mentioned you might have input shaft issues length issue. it is a 10 spline though. the cummins nv4500 bell is 7.6 inches iirc if that helps. you also have the engine adapter to consider that the gretrag uses. i wouldn't think it'd be too hard to work out with the right clutch selection or maybe a flywheel spacer...i don't think you would like a 4 speed any better than the 3 speed auto though. about the same highway manners. once you get into gear splitters/UD/OD units prices are going to be about the same as an nv4500 if not more.have you considered a gretrag as a budget alternative? it's not a bad transmission at all, and they turn up cheap from people swapping.
1/17/2007 8:04:41 PM
I haven't found very many cheap Getrags. In all reality, it would probably suit me just fine if I could find one cheap enough. Biggest problem with the Getrags is parts availability. But I think there are suppliers that do sell stuff for them.I'm keeping my 3.08 axle gears, and I'm wondering if I can shoot for the 25mpg mark with the right tranny. This truck runs a LOT of highway miles (29k since I got the truck in February).
1/17/2007 8:10:00 PM
you should easily see 25mpg with those gears. hell, i can manage 18-20 with my bohemoth and 4.10's.
1/17/2007 8:12:17 PM
ok i know the 5600 has a bell housing on it but i think the 4500 bell housing is smaller too.
1/17/2007 8:13:49 PM
It is. Both of those trannies are 4wd applications there. The 5600 also has a 1 3/8" input shaft vs. the 4500's 1 1/4"
1/17/2007 8:17:45 PM
hahaha i was looking @ putting them in a 66 bronco ... turns out with the 56 my rear drive shaft would have been practically non existent
1/17/2007 10:23:13 PM
the nv5600 is a huge, heavy bastard. cool in the truck they came in, but not worth swapping into something else over an nv4500.
1/17/2007 10:45:46 PM
yeah young dumb and had dreams of 6 speeds.

1/18/2007 9:15:46 AM
have you checked into the allison autos that came behind the Cummins in RV's??I have heard of them being bolted into trucks, but not sure how much fab is required.[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 10:37 AM. Reason : you already mentioned bread trucks]
1/18/2007 10:36:54 AM
we've got a couple of sm420's (one with a pto) from behind a 292 chev. (school bus) and a 305 gmc v6 (ton and a half dump) if they'll work.

Yer damn tootin'...I wish I could find even higher gears for the Dana 70. But the highest I've found is my 3.08's...And the highest you can buy commercially now are 3.54 gears.Cummins runs out of wind now at 75 mph. And I really don't want to put the 3200 rpm governor spring in the pump; I honestly do NOT think this engine produces much more usable power over 2500, and it pulls best around 1700.NV4500 still appears to be the best all-around choice unless I can lay my hands on a CHEAP gear splitter or overdrive that will bolt up to the Muncie boxes or the NP.Most of the older NP 5 speed boxes, Eaton/Fuller boxes, etc., have a 1-to-1 fifth and fall in the same category. Shit.[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 11:06 PM. Reason : CHEAP]
1/18/2007 11:06:39 PM
Not sure how much clearance you have with that utility body, but if you just want to gear it up, you could always just stick taller tires on it. Whole lot cheaper than a gear vendors, or a re-gear.
1/19/2007 12:57:40 AM
The utility body is going away. Taller tires ain't really an option; duals is actually next.
1/19/2007 1:22:45 AM
I've also got a 2 spd. rear end. You could have a nice rake going on.
1/19/2007 7:11:17 AM
mount you a four speed backwards behind your current transmission....kinda like this (I know the link is an old ass ford, but the concept is the same)http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/568213-4-speed-4-speed-7-speed-w-3-od.html
1/19/2007 8:57:29 AM
^that is freakin awesome
1/19/2007 9:23:54 AM
Now there's a really cool idea, but you really need to have the input shaft supported with an extension housing and another bearing. At least that's what I'm thinking. Now if I could score two trannies and a bellhousing really cheap.
1/19/2007 12:47:03 PM
I found me an NP435 today. Can be had dirt cheap. It already has the Mopar input shaft...but it has a mopar gas v8 bellhousing though.hmmm...to do or not to do. If I could do the transmission thing in series, I'd do that too. I know where I can get a T-18 out of a Ford for pretty damn cheap. What to do, what to do...On another note, MR2 got crizzanked today. But still not together totally. I'm the dumbass what had parts strewn all over the gay-rage, and can't find half of the motherfuckers.
1/21/2007 10:52:21 PM
lemme holler at that bellhousing if you get it.i think the dual trannys is about the best idea. probably the cheapest, and you've got the skillz to do it. plus it just the sort of wacky project you'd be into. keep in mind the input (or output technically, whatever) on that rear trans is going to see some pretty damn big torque numbers.i saw a toyota a while back with dual trannys (both forward). pretty cool, gave some stupid low crawl ratios.[Edited on January 21, 2007 at 11:15 PM. ^^cruiser boy in cary with the big oversized blue old fj40 is doin that kinda. dual transfer cases.well it will be 8 years b4 he finishes tho
1/21/2007 11:38:22 PM
yeah, dual cases have become common place in the 4wd world. toyotas were the first i believe, but now there's a bunch of other combinations out there with 203's, 205's, d300's, np231's, etc. Tuite has a pretty sweet toyota setup in his trooper. 4.7's in the range box also.

Alright fucksticks. This is what I just won on ebay. Go figure. I might have just blown 215 bux on nothing, but what the hell...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=150081204499

badass! nice score. what's the "issue" with it? not much info in the listing...
1/23/2007 9:14:38 PM
I have no idea. I might have just taken it in the shitter, but I have enough experience rebuilding bigger boxes like this one that I ain't scared. The last one I did was a New Process 540 5 speed out of a GMC dump truck with a 305 V6. That turned out fucking rosy.
1/23/2007 9:18:43 PM
are you going to double up or replace?
1/23/2007 9:21:57 PM
is the bellhousing custom or some sort of adapter. if not what was the factory application for this cause ive never heard of it
1/23/2007 9:27:08 PM
medium duty straight truck. Something like an International 4300, 4400, 4500, Ford 7000, GMC Top Kick, etc.For now, I'll just work on getting the thing in my truck, if it'll go. No doubles until the first issue is solved.Bellhousing is most likely an SAE #2...and it's highly likely that that's what my truck has; the TF727 has been used behind such engines as International's 345 (Scout, etc) with an SAE bellhousing. There's a chance that I won't be able to do a damn thing with this tranny, but I decided to bid on a whim, confident that I would get sniped. But I didn't. Evidently either everybody else knows something that I don't, or folks just don't know what it is...like in here.[Edited on January 23, 2007 at 10:11 PM. Reason : one never knows.]

^common name in the medium/heavy duty truck market.it's out of a medium duty truck if i had to guess. or possibley a bus.

Well if I can cram it in the SuperDodge, I will...
