i saw a carved tablet in a local museum, and i need help identifying which civilization it belongs to. either pm me your email address, and i will send the pic to you, or some kind twwer please host the pic in his/her gallery, as i would have to delete 50 pics from my gallery just to upload this one (my gallery is from the time when there was no limit, and now, not being a premie, i would have to delete a lot of pics to bring them under 50 and then add this one).someone who IS somewhat of an expert told me it is an [XYZ ethnic group] artifact, and i want to make sure of it. because if it is, i would like to buy it and sell it to a proper museum in the US or Europe. or maybe auction it.thanks.so, who wants to have the pic in their tww gallery for some time?

There are a couple of things that REALLY make this a pathetic thread:1) You aren't willing to pay the price for a premium account.2) You aren't willing to delete any photos from your photo gallery.3) You don't have a free webpage somewhere that could do this in 5 minutes or less.I wouldn't know crap about what you are trying to identify, but this isn't the best way to start off trying to do so.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 8:05 PM. ^^ when you assume things, it makes you look like an ass.1 - i am not in the US.2 - there are restrictions on the internet here, i.e., some sites are blocked.3 - i only have access to dialup.put 1-3 together, and it will answer your 1-3's, with a bit of imagination and thinking on your own.*******************************************************************here is the pic:http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc05232uy9.jpg

try pming amazonI believe she's something like a bioarchaeology major. I think its one of those build your own majors, b/c when I was at state trying to take archaelogy we didnt offer any (I graduated last year, so they can't have established alot since then) so I did the interinstitutional thing and took a class at UNC which has the best classics/archaelogy program in the state... and probably the southeast. If amazon can't help, I know some grad students and professors in that department over here at unc where I live now (my bf was their #1 recruit for gradschool this year so I, through him, have plenty of contacts in addition to who I know from studying ancient philosophy & ancient stuff being a bit of a side hobby of my own). Also maybe have a look through this thread to see who has postedhttp://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=440164Some of them might know what they are talking about when it comes to ancient stuff.[Edited on January 8, 2007 at 8:28 PM. thanks to those who responded.the one person who did see it in person with me, and who is doing a phd in archaeology, said that it is JEWISH.he is a jew himself, and as soon as he saw it, he was certain the tablet was jewish.

that top one looks like it's wearing the unified crown of egypt
1/25/2007 10:38:11 PM
hey, 0EPII1, is someone trying to rip you off?how much do they want for that piece?
1/26/2007 1:15:26 AM
looks ancient egyptian for several reasons.A) there is a lotus flower on the far rightB) he is wearing the head gear that would be found on a pharaoh's coffinC) the crown on his head, as someone already stated is both the crown of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. (although the crown isn't exactly the same...but the serpant is similar.D) this throws me off but the wings look like something from ancient babalon.C) its a sphinxD) the cartoush that is attached to the lotus flower.

^ BigMan157 has already established that its a knockoff of an actual 8th C. BCE neo-Assyrian piece owned by The Met.http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/ho/04/wam/ho_54.117.1.htm[Edited on January 29, 2007 at 12:12 PM. Reason : ]
1/29/2007 12:11:23 PM
^ why does it have to be fake?the met museum says it is a horse blinder, so i am sure the assyrians made more than one of those.the guy selling it wants USD 800.i wonder how much i could sell it for IF it is real.
1/30/2007 2:55:42 AM
well, sure why not.i can imagine that the 8th C. BCE neo-assyrians specialized in mass producing identical horse blinders, to the point that they are otherwise indistinguishable to the eye. im thinking something like a press brake, or injection molder ... but you know, for ivory.sure, buy it. then maybe you could sell it to the NC museum of Natural Historyand turn a bit of a profit.[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 3:45 AM. 1/30/2007 3:43:56 AM
^ dude, are you really that blind?there are OBVIOUS differences in the proportions of various details in there. look at the distances of various details from the edge. look at the tails, the wings, the snakes... shit man, you need glasses.and, are you really doubting the ability of craftsmen to be able to produce nearly identical (and by that i don't mean the museum piece and my pic; i mean so identical that you basically can't distiniguish them with the eye) artifacts by hand? oh no you didn't....
1/30/2007 3:48:38 AM
no, dude. i'm totally with you on this.it's awesomesee, what used to be a one-of-a-kind unique 2700-year-old object, thought to be the singularly extant piece, we've just now discovered its sister counterpart. what an amazing find! the study of near-eastern archaeology has taken a fortuitous turn!perhaps when you sell that piece to the Met, they'll honor you not only with a bit of profit, but favorable footnote mention on the display and in the archaeological catalogue.its simply amazing.so... do you have the 800 bucks, or should we pool together for you and wire it?[Edited on January 30, 2007 at 5:11 AM. 1/30/2007 5:11:08 AM
Hold the phones!i just realized, dude .... just like the one at the Met, youve got ANOTHER LEFT HAND SIDE PIECE!that means....there are at least two more RIGHT HAND SIDE PIECES WAITING TO BE FOUND!!dammit man, dont just stand around with your jaw hanging open, GRAB SOME SHOVELS!
1/30/2007 5:18:29 AM
If you don't buy it I will. My horse lost his right eye at a Slayer concert and I've noticed that his always looking at shit that I don't approve of with his remaining eye.

Of course, with the acceleration of Global Warming, you're probably right.(badabing)
1/31/2007 12:09:11 AM
Well now that we have figured out exactly what this is, it seems like any decent archaeologist could tell you wehether you could expect to find multiple copies of a similar work. If it is a horse blinder it would make sense that you might be able to find many of them that were similar. It seems like if I was someone important and had a dozen chariots, they would all have matching blinders, especially on the off chance that one got broken. It seems like it could be a scam, but it also doesn't seem too unreasonable. I mean, they made multiple copies of the Constitution. If you found one of them today you'd probably say it was just a cheap ripoff, but it could be the real deal. It never hurts to ask.
