To avoid the beaches me and a few buds were thinking this would be a good idea and what I've read says that most of the tourist areas were preserved from Katrina. I'm basicly asking what should we look to do for fun and where should we stay to be in walking or cheap cab distance from the main attractions. Yes I used search and the only good topic had been ruined with inter-tdub squabble.

i wouldnt want to go there for spring break unless it coincided with Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is February 20th this year. Parade season lasts from 2/10-20. Just so you know


I just came back from New Orleans for Xmas, and I can tell you -- if you don't have friends' houses where you can just hang out and shoot the shit for a few hours, there aren't THAT many alternatives. I found myself doing the same shit by my 5th day home, and I'd been to Baton Rouge (an hour away) and Mandeville (a 24-mile drive across Lake Pontchartrain) by then. As my buddy Mark put it, "It's all good here if you're not expecting things to be the way they were."

it was fun the year i went for spring break
you can stay right on royal st for $100 a night and bourbon st was still really full at night

^^ the best one (Boomtown) is about 15 minutes from downtown New Orleans.There are plenty of hotels near Boomtown, but the drawback is that it's across the river, so unless you take the Huey P Long bridge back to the eastbank you'll be paying a $1 toll to cross over (it's free going back to the westbank on either bridge). There's Harrah's, which IS in downtown New Orleans, all the way upriver on Canal St. Good shopping in that area, also. Tons of hotels, but prices will be jacked the fuck up because of Mardi Gras (and probably heavily booked by now - I'd start calling today if I were you). I'd suggest finding something in Metairie or Kenner (just west of New Orleans) and taking the fairly short drive... but first, start with hotels downtown (from google local, search for hotels near 8 Canal St., New Orleans).

Speaking of Kenner, the Treasure Chest Casino is out that way on Williams Blvd. all the way to the lake. Currently running on limited hours because of HK, but still a pretty fun place overall.

^ actually Mardi Gras will have been over for about two weeks I think. From what I've read March is still during the peek of the tourist season, but thanks for the help with the riverboats.

my mom is a travel agent and she keeps saying that now is a really good time to go. Most eveything in the turist area's is open but it seems like most people don't know or arn't visiting. So you can get a really good hotel and find fun things to do for cheap. Also airfair to NO is cheaper then it used to be. Good Luck, have fun

Spring Break is March 5-9 for you guys, which doesn't coincide with any other school's midterms there (Tulane is about 2 weeks after, and LSU/UNO/Loyola won't get out until April). Stuff should be cheap and way less booked around then.

im from new orleans and i can tell you...if you're 21 or have a fake, you will have a blast
riverwalk is a pretty fun place. its close to the quarter/bourbon and there are stuff like the mall and aquarium and stuff like that. its also 5 min from Harrah's casino, btw great food there. well its new orleans: great food everywhere. but i would have to agree with the previous comment: its better if you know someone who lives there. there are street cars that run along alot of the main tourist roads such as st.charles, canal st, poydras, etc. they are a cheap and convenient way to get around downtown. you can also check out the saints training camp which is near the metairie/kenner city line on airline hwy. ....ummm what else....
