There really hasn't been any good horror movies recently. Gore movies such as Saw and Hostel I don't really count, because its more of an effort to shock the viewer than it is scare.

uh, no. not in my and many many many others' opinions. The Cave, The Omen remake, and the Wicker Man remake on the other hand...http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/descent/"The Descent sustains a level of intensity that most horror films can barely muster for five minutes."says it best.and "If you saw last year's Cole Hauser flick The Cave, then imagine it not sucking or skimping, and you've got it."[Edited on December 29, 2006 at 9:47 PM. Dawn/Shaun/Land of The Dead and 28 Days Later also come to mind, once again depending on what you mean by recent

^shaun of the dead is a horror film?

I liked Event Horizon, but that was a while ago.

I've never finished watching anything in the horror genre and come out of it thinking, "hey, that was good."At least not as long as I can remember.
12/29/2006 10:16:23 PM
The Descent was good horror in my book. not much else lately that would qualify as horror though.

12/29/2006 10:32:54 PM
I will say this, everytime I see trailers in a theater I am forced to say at least twice "oh great, another dogshit horror remake"
12/29/2006 10:36:31 PM
yeah, far too many remakes.
12/29/2006 10:38:36 PM
yes.they are all just "boo in the dark" these days.go watch "dont look now" by Roeg for a classic horror flick.[Edited on December 29, 2006 at 11:00 PM. Reason : Roeg]
12/29/2006 11:00:01 PM
the scariest part of the descent is them being in tiny spaces. the whole monster angle was more of an action movie than scary.as far as gore not counting, theres something to be said for cringing at the sight of whats on screen. may not be a "spooky" factor, but it is still horror.
12/29/2006 11:15:24 PM
yeah that's one thing that made the descent so fantastico if you ask me, the scary man-eating creatures were added onto and mixed with an already scary place and situation[Edited on December 29, 2006 at 11:17 PM. Reason : fds]
12/29/2006 11:16:51 PM
but the maneating creatures part was overdone and just like every other monster flick. i actually got somewhat bored of the movie when the monsters started coming.pick throat and tiny cavern tremors were the best parts. in the end though, the entire plot was dumb and i felt like the characters were a tad on the unrealistic side (read: results from axe throat)
12/29/2006 11:19:24 PM
ha yeah, but i'm not too worried about realism in a horror flick, the conversation between the axe-throated and the main chick did advance the story with the affair thing(if you're referring to the axe-throated being still alive?)

trying to be vague as this isnt a thread about it and im too lazy to make a spoiler line. it isnt so much that it is unrealistic as it is soooo out of character. i get the whole crazed amazon woman take on it, but i had to suspend my disbelief a hair too much.
12/29/2006 11:26:25 PM
I just saw a preivew for something, I think it was called Thre3, hahaha, can we say rip off of se7en? But for real, the Hitcher I think it is called? The movie about the hitchhiker, looks kind of decent, but that probably means it's gonna be a let down.
12/29/2006 11:57:27 PM
it has sean bean i think, isn't it a remake too?
12/30/2006 12:01:09 AM
it's a remake of a great fucking movieone of the first movies to scare the crap out of me when i was a kid(since i haven't seen it in about 13 years, it could suck)fucking hollywoodyes there have always been shit horror moviesbut these days everything is a sequel, prequel or remakei hate it i hate it i hate it
12/30/2006 12:09:03 AM
Yea the genre is definately lacking originality.
12/30/2006 12:26:12 AM
Shit, do none of you remember the show"The hitchhiker"It was one big horror series. God damn noobs.
12/30/2006 12:53:04 AM
the hitchhiker has no connection to the hitcher and its remake
12/30/2006 12:55:52 AM
I loved the hitchhiker series ... I wonder why i hate horror movies now :x

I'll tell you what's a good horror movie...Deliverance. It creates all sorts of fear. Fear of drowning, rape, torture, death by violence, regret and dread. And then in the later part there's the haunting notion that you killed the innocent and may face a life in jail. The characters fought through the first half to get back to town, but by then the town thought they were killers so they were in danger even there. Most of all it's real fear from a realistic situation. There are no boogeymen, only people doing what people do.I'll saw my own fucking leg off before I watch another Saw type movie. The trailer for The Descent looked alright, but then I saw that fake looking troll army and figured they'd find a way to suck it up so I never saw it.Session 9 had potential, but turned out to be silly. They wasted that great location they shot at.[Edited on December 30, 2006 at 1:42 AM. Reason : .]
12/30/2006 1:39:08 AM
the descent is great. ya might say it's unrealistic or they behaved so out of character or whatever, but i think that's a point the movie was trying to make. when you're put in such situations yo do behave out of character. you have no idea how you'll really act when survival mode kicks in. and i agree there are as many good horror movies today as there ever were. it's just when you were a kid everything scared the crap out of ya. i mean come on, watch the movie IT now and it's freaking horrible.
12/30/2006 2:22:42 AM
^ like i said, it made sense throughout the middle, but the end was beyond "im in survival mode." again, it wasnt a bad film, but the ending 20 mins or so was too much.^^ i kinda liked session 9. it wasnt super well done, but i liked the premise at least. the location probably coulda been used better elsewhere, i agree.

12/30/2006 3:54:42 PM
cmon now, visually it was better than 99% of the horror movies out there. silent hill is an example of me being able to forgive some bad acting and plot shittiness for nice visuals.
12/30/2006 4:17:48 PM

the hills have eyes was pretty good i thought...
12/30/2006 4:31:16 PM
^^ i understand that woody. my point was that horror movies need to have something else to make up for it. you cant have shitty special effects, acting, plot, writing, and visuals. gotta pick and choose. i also judge based on horror as a group, not against other movies. the little girl in silent hill was just plain terrible, but (as i said) i was able to get past that. same with plot holes. there were some, as usual, but it wasnt enough to take away from the movie as a whole for me, particularly since it was a horror film.
12/30/2006 5:38:12 PM
Silent Hill was awful specifically because I require characters and some semblance of a believable plot in horror movies. Most of the newer horror movies don't deliver that because they're too busy trying to scare the shit out of you every five minutes. I'd much rather watch something like Rosemary's Baby in which there aren't so many startling scenes as there is a terrifying foreboding throughout the entire thing. But to each his own, I suppose.
12/30/2006 5:49:56 PM
Lesbian undertones, violence, descent into hell, video game aspects, good visuals, and interesting sound effects. I don't know what more a college student should expect out of a horror movie.
12/30/2006 5:53:55 PM

yeah, but this gets back to the woodfoot whinings. just like most of them have bad acting, most are pretty unbelievable. the only really arguable ones are crazed lunatics or sadists a la hostel, strangeland, or other shit like that.[Edited on December 30, 2006 at 6:12 PM.
