anyone else noticed how now when classic heavy hitters like jay-z, nas, even ghost and others, come out with some new shit, it never holds a candle to their classic material? i mean i cant listen to all the tracks on the latest method man album, who would have ever predicted some shit like that? 10 years ago I never saw such grown up rap hitting the genre. I mean... this isn't a rap-exclusive phenomenon. It's not a new phenomenon either.

actually i think the technology available to them now, and the fact that flashy producers flood the market now are ruining shit too. look at old school marly marl or large professor or early rza shit with the old rugged down and dirty beats... the rap really had to really say something, it had to really say something to make an album work, now the rap seems secondary to the flashy kayne west or neptunes beats.

Jay-Z dropped his best album when he was 32. Ghost's recent stuff is on par with his best and method man never dropped a classic unless you count 36 chambers. Different artists peak at different stages in their careers. Check out the new Ice-T and X-Clan albums if you wanna hear quality stuff by rappers in their 40s. If not, be happy those artists gave you those classics in the first place and accept that illmatic is never going to come around again.
