12/21/2006 11:33:38 AM
i dont know what that means..but my internet has been REALLY slow..its taken me 40 min. to sign onto gaim..it kept trying and says disconnected..and it takes me a min. or so to load a page
12/21/2006 11:37:00 AM
same thing off kaplan
12/21/2006 11:38:09 AM
same here
12/21/2006 11:40:38 AM
oh sorry everybody, lemme shut down my torrentz
12/21/2006 11:41:57 AM
bad here too, TWC phone lines are busy
12/21/2006 12:01:09 PM
fuck this man - my shit is crawling. all of TWC's numbers are all busy so I can't bitch.
12/21/2006 12:01:29 PM
I just heard that they had a construction accident that took out 250,000 customers.
12/21/2006 12:04:25 PM
Just be happy with what you've got. At least they aren't coming to your home and physically disconnecting your cable internet for no reason at all.
12/21/2006 12:06:55 PM
Ummm, why would they do that?
12/21/2006 12:08:38 PM
yep, news said that a line got cut, severing service to most of the area
12/21/2006 12:46:11 PM
has anyone been able to get in touch with them for an estimated uptime?
12/21/2006 12:47:21 PM
bluetooth sprint phones with unlimited data ftw
12/21/2006 12:52:40 PM
yeah the service at home in durham has been super flaky
12/21/2006 12:58:54 PM
speaking of TWC .... did you know you can switch between earthlink and roadrunner to get their good deals for "new customers" ? and if you order it thru bestbuy u can usually get a rebate. I switched from rr to earthlink, so my internet is now down to $30/mo, and I *should* be getting a $100 best buy gift card.... we shall see

Is anyone in Raleigh NOT affected on time warner? Gimme locations .
12/21/2006 1:19:45 PM
its a good bet that everywhere is affected as the people who got cut seem to be spill over routed through everyone else's shit, explaining the insane latency and lack of bandwidth. this is all my personal speculation though.
12/21/2006 1:46:11 PM
Same problem here in Clayton too.I'm at a 6s latency time for most hops though...Actually, as soon as I made this post, it's started working normally [Edited on December 21, 2006 at 2:13 PM. Reason : ]

12/21/2006 2:14:16 PM
12/21/2006 2:47:22 PM
that's amazing, one little cut line and a 1/4 million people are fucked
12/21/2006 3:03:19 PM
its not really amazing at all
12/21/2006 3:19:07 PM
i would have figured that they would have several lines and could switch over if one went down
12/21/2006 8:23:28 PM
I suspect they do have other lines, hence why most people had a connection, merely a slow one. Whatever other lines there were are incapable of handling the throughput of all customers. Evidently their response to this is simply to buffer the data, in effect making everyone stand in line for their turn through the remaining pipe(s). Hence why latency changed throughout the day (the first post shows a latency of 3 seconds, at a later time another poster reported 10 seconds). This is all conjecture on my part as I do not work for time warner.

laying down cable is an extremely expensive proposition - why the hell would you lay down redundant cables in geographically isolated locations just in case one got cut? then you'd have way more capacity than you needed and you'd have to amortize that cost across all your customers. stupid idea[Edited on December 22, 2006 at 5:55 AM. Reason : s]
12/22/2006 5:55:24 AM
true but most of Raleigh, Clayton, Cary were affected. I wouldn't call the capitol of North Carolina... "geographically isolated"
12/22/2006 7:38:27 AM
i was obviously referring to the cables when I said geographically isolated, and obviously meant that they would have to be placed at far distances geographically from each other in order to make the redundancy worthwhile.idiot
12/22/2006 1:54:39 PM
haha speaking of whichi don't know how many it affected today, but a large truck clipped some low lines in a church parking lot off of new hope earlier this afternoon. must have been around 2pm. of course when i got home, no cable or internet. i drove back by there around 7pm and they had like 10+ cable vans and such working on it.[Edited on December 23, 2006 at 1:49 AM. 12/23/2006 1:48:33 AM
I assure you they run more than one single cable. Its multiple in one bundle. If one gets cut they most likely all do.Have you ever looked up how they make fiber optic cables, its interesting stuff.[Edited on December 23, 2006 at 1:52 AM. Reason : . erbium doped ]
