Just got back from the Raleigh City meeting. The residential community off on Trailwood had a representative speak urging the city to reduce the speed limit to 35 MPH and to set up "speed traps" (that word choice got a chuckle from the council and the audience). He brought a powerpoint and everything. It was a bit odd at first, but he gave a fairly solid presentation. Unfortunately, DOT has to make any sort of speed limit change. Anyway, the Council seemed impressed and urged a strong recommendation to DOT. Also, watch out for cops!

What 'residential community' would that be? The going is already slow enough now from traffic with no passing zones. I'm pretty sure there arent many wrecks from speed involved either, excluding the drunk idiot who got to meet a tree, he probably took that hard turn in the middle of the night around 60+.
12/5/2006 9:17:47 PM
the speed limit is fine, and its already often a speed trap
12/5/2006 9:20:19 PM
35 sounds good to me
12/5/2006 9:20:50 PM
that turn could be a 35, but the rest of the road is straight with no houses near the road
12/5/2006 9:26:08 PM
that road does NOT need to be 35.
12/5/2006 9:35:09 PM
The turn probably should be 35. Turning left out of Trailwood Knoll is hard.[Edited on December 5, 2006 at 9:44 PM. Reason : Nevermind, i was thinking of Lineberry.]
12/5/2006 9:41:45 PM
This'll show that guy that went 100 and died.
12/5/2006 9:42:48 PM
35 on that road would be too slow. i usually go 55ish and that is perfectly fine. the road is only a mile long...so its not like it makes a huge time difference if they were to reduce the speed, but this would be a pointless change.
12/5/2006 9:55:21 PM
ugh, i don't want to have to go all the way to gorman and thistledownglad i wont be in raleigh but for a few more months
12/5/2006 10:13:36 PM
Apparently, North of the beltline is mostly residential on trailwood. Basically, the road wasn't built to handle its volume. This hasn't stopped developers from building the apartment complexes students live in. The resident suggested restricting the speed limit to 35 to make trailwood a far less attractive road to travel on for cut-through purposes (Gormon has five lanes). The problem is that tons of college students use the road since they live off of it. So it's another one of those screw the students deals. You peeps that are pissed off should show up and complain.
12/5/2006 10:19:24 PM
trailwood is not in city limits
12/5/2006 10:21:39 PM
glad i wont be in raleigh but for a few more months
12/5/2006 10:22:43 PM
^^There is a donut Wake County region, yes. Still, part of it is in raleigh, though they must cede authority to the DOT.
12/5/2006 10:24:09 PM
^^^^^^^ "The turn probably should be 35. Turning left out of Trailwood Knoll is hard."turning right out of trailwood knoll is hard. i've pulled out in front of so many people who were going too fast around that blind curve (almost got rear ended by a cop once)but on topic: i dont think reducing the speed limit will make students go any slower. speed traps might.^^ trailwood is in city limits. ever seen that sign that says raleigh city limit?
12/5/2006 10:30:30 PM
Got up to 70+ on it last month in day light. I never go this fast, but there was some speed freak ahead of me and I wanted to see how fast he was going. I doubt I'll ever go over 60 on it again, and I don't go over 45-50 at night simply because of all the deer.
12/5/2006 10:52:43 PM
nothing is wrong with the speed limit. some streetlights wouldn't hurt if that was possible.
12/5/2006 11:01:19 PM
I've been in a car going 115 on that road before.
12/5/2006 11:18:15 PM
12/5/2006 11:30:50 PM
Well, based on his presentation the road seemed to get stalled/clogged in the morning/afternoons after classes.
12/6/2006 12:12:05 AM
they just need some street lights, and open that stretch to hunters to stop the deer from always crossing the road at night...of course, have a weekly vension cookout in that neighborhood that is presenting the problem........that way, everyone's happy[Edited on December 6, 2006 at 12:56 AM. he thinks reduced speed will reduce cut-through traffic. such as the UHouse bus and residents, by having them take gorman which is wider
12/6/2006 2:11:11 AM
The real solution is banning old people from living within a 5 mile radius of campus.
12/6/2006 4:56:31 AM
35 is bull crap..if they wanna do something with trailwood... FIX THE FRICKIN POTHOLES. there's your complaint from a trailwood resident
12/6/2006 5:56:15 AM
12/6/2006 8:18:24 AM
12/6/2006 8:23:56 AM
why dont they just embiggen it? many folks live off it, would ease the situation for the better rather than trying to control the population and increase revenues...
12/6/2006 8:51:50 AM
^ That's not a cromulent solution at this point.
12/6/2006 9:00:23 AM
it seems perfectly cromulent to me
12/6/2006 9:08:14 AM
There are a couple of people who have way too much time on their hands and run the HOAs and neighborhood watches around Lineberry. They like to control things like no parking anywhere, reduce speed limits, etc.The speed limit on Trailwood is not the problem. Idiots who deserve to die will still go 70+ MPH on that road, no matter what the limit is. Natural selection, just don't take out a pretty tree in the process. The biggest problem on Trailwood is the blind hill you go over approaching Avent Ferry. Also, there are absolutely no shoulders. Widen the road! Put in longer turn lanes. Put signs up near the blind hill that there may be a car stopped immediately over it.

12/6/2006 9:40:53 AM
haha.....remember the fear in driving down trailwood on a friday/saturday night.......when there weren't any lines on the road after they just paved it.....took like 3 weeks to get lines on the road, in fact isn't there a sign up that still says unmarked pavement? they took time to concrete in a nice big sign rather than paint the damn lines.....
12/6/2006 12:19:26 PM
I'm guessing the jurisdiction limbo between Wake County and Raleigh isn't expediting any administrative tasks.
12/6/2006 12:21:59 PM
Reducing Trailwood to 35 isn't going to help anything. But i'd love to watch them try to make a speed trap on that little 2 lane highway. Honestly, i think they need to worry less about the speed & more about all the drunk people that they let SLIDE completely because the cops out there are COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT... I haven't heard of any incidents on Trailwood due to speed alone. If the residents really didn't want traffic there they should have vetoed the repaving... hell the pot holes kept me off there. If you were coming back from campus late at night on a motorcycle and a new pot hole had shown up during the day you were in for an interesting ride. Anywho-- fuck it. Maybe I'll go speed down Trailwood today to piss them off. Oh wait... there's always gonna be that little girl in her honda & her face shields year round going 35 anyway. [Edited on December 6, 2006 at 2:03 PM. Reason : ]
12/6/2006 2:01:46 PM
they need to concentrate on getting Tryon road finished and fixing pot holes
12/6/2006 2:20:30 PM
MORE TAXES!
12/6/2006 2:56:20 PM
that pothole seems to be resurfacing
12/6/2006 4:00:59 PM
All they need is for people not to drive like idiots when they get down past Thistledown going toward Avent Ferry. A hilly road with no shoulders is not a good place to decide to pass someone... the double yellow line is there for a reason.
12/7/2006 3:19:42 PM
im down w/ 35mph for that road... but then again i never drive it
12/7/2006 3:37:41 PM
the only reason i hate that fucking road is all the trees because that means there might be a fucking deer popping out any minutethats a pretty big problem back home, and i've seen like 5 deer and raleigh and they were all on that road
12/7/2006 3:51:37 PM
i wouldn't have a big problem with 35..has any one else almost hit a family of dear on that road at night.I keep trying, but they are fast.
