this time of year, you should be able to get one quickly. the rush hits closer to summertime when all the church kids have to apply for ones to go to latin america.where are you going?[Edited on December 4, 2006 at 8:04 PM. Reason : .]

haiti, im going with church kids this will be my 4th trip, my old passport expired
12/4/2006 8:06:09 PM
haha, true enough. have fun, i actually have haitian family, strangely enough (married into the family, ha, like i look haitian ). they really need help there. I'm trying to decide when to go work on a similar project right now myself, but I've already been through the carribean doing work so it's time for something new.[Edited on December 4, 2006 at 8:08 PM. i want to go see other countries, but ive fallen in love with haiti. one or two more group trips and then id like to go down on my own for a few months.
12/4/2006 8:12:59 PM
good to see that not everyone simply views it as a cesspool where simply setting foot on the island will give you a disease.
12/4/2006 8:16:07 PM
well you wont see me playing barefoot in cite soleil, but yeah its a beautiful country. the people are amazing, it really sucks how bad the us has messed up their country.
12/4/2006 8:20:00 PM
hmm...maybe i should actually take a look at going there instead...

I just got mine. It takes 8 weeks if you don't expedite and 2 weeks if you do. Fill out the application and if you're on campus the best place to go is the post office on Oberlin across from the harris teeter, they'll do your picture and process the passport there. Make sure to have everything when you get there though, including old and expired passports.

Allow AT LEAST 2 months. Seriously. I just got a new passport last spring and the people at the Wilmington post office were total fucktards. They didn't give me a receipt or anything, didn't know how to do a government passport, completely worthless basically. I was so worried they'd fucked it up beyond repair and I'd never get it. Miraculously, I did get my passports on time though.
12/4/2006 11:30:04 PM
damn i didnt realize that shit cost $100, wtf
12/5/2006 5:49:57 PM
I would suggest going to the Garner post office. They are quite nice there and quickly processed mine.
12/5/2006 5:51:53 PM
i just went to the one on oberlin, i was in and out in under 10 minutes
12/5/2006 5:55:25 PM
It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. I got my passport and visa to China 5 days after I sent it off. I used a passport service company.

for the bahamas:http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html#bis that outdated? am i reading it right, because from what i understand as long as you are not traveling via air, you can use the birth certificate to get in.....i.e. cruisealso, i don't seem to have my "original" birth certificate since i was born in TX.....i remember when i got my license it was a hassle to get the one i have.....any advice?
1/10/2007 10:49:12 PM
ps I got it yesterday
1/10/2007 10:51:42 PM
applied for mine two days ago
1/10/2007 10:55:39 PM
^^^It says you can use a birth certificate, even if you're travelling by air.To get your birth certificate, I'd call your parents.[Edited on January 11, 2007 at 11:48 AM. Reason : sss]

^^^^ yes, that's outdated
1/11/2007 11:59:33 AM
Oh snap! I forgot about that. That sucks.
1/11/2007 12:16:31 PM
My wife applied for one like the week before Thanksgiving and had it in-hand in about 4-5 weeks, which I thought was pretty quick.I'd allow 2 months, though. And WTF that stupid thing was seriously like $100 or more after they charge you to take a snapshot...I swear the one I got in '03 was like $50-60
1/11/2007 12:31:10 PM
I would get it expidited just in case. They say on the form or whatever that it can take up to three months. I got mine in 10 days but it was literally an act of congress to do it
1/11/2007 12:53:07 PM
1/11/2007 1:23:32 PM
everyone in my office applied for their passports by dec 8th and had them expidited. the shortest turn around time was 5 days, the longest was 8 days. my boss applied for his renewal, not expidited, and it took 3 and a half weeks.
1/11/2007 1:24:18 PM
How much more does it cost to expedite them or is it just 'I want it now bitches'?
1/11/2007 1:57:39 PM
it's like $60 something extralook on the govt's passport page, it says there.[Edited on January 11, 2007 at 1:58 PM. Reason : ]

I actually pulled some strings and got some lady at the Bob Dole building (or whatever it's called) to next-day airmail mine to one of her friends that worked up in DC who made my passport in a few hours after he got it at 10am, and had it back to me the next morning at 10am. So like 48 total hours.Of course, my trip was like 4 days away and I was dumb for waiting that long...and it costed me out the nose.

^^ For getting passports, probably. But when it comes to getting visas to questionably friendly countries with a quickness, they are priceless.
1/11/2007 9:34:26 PM
confirmed today: a photo id and an original birth certificate will suffice for the bahamas (as long as travel is not via plane)
1/12/2007 7:19:12 PM
Cruises only recommend a passport so if you're one of the idiots who get stranded at the port in another country/territory you can fly back into the U.S. If you dont stop by ports on your cruise, or know how to actually use a watch, dont worry bout it.
1/12/2007 7:23:32 PM
well i called today and the woman said cruises do not require a passport, but if u were flying then they were required
1/12/2007 7:50:03 PM
Last January I applied for mine...it took 8 1/2 weeks to get it....and yes it is rather expensive (but as mentioned above they are good for 10 years)
1/12/2007 10:53:04 PM
my passport is still good through 2011
1/15/2007 11:56:11 AM
i got my passport pictures taken at AAA for free

whats with the rule about traveling by air?so if you're going by a commercial boat you don't need one?
3/27/2008 10:53:00 AM
you don't need one to get on the boat, but you can't get through customs at your destination without a passport.I got my passport in January 9 days after filling out the application, and I didn't bother to get it expedited.
3/27/2008 12:38:56 PM
already spoke with the captain, the crew is covered by the boats "passport", I'm not gonna need one personally unless I leave the resort most of the time we'll be at sea anyway, the resort is just for docking in bad weather
3/27/2008 1:24:59 PM
You'll get the RFID-chipped passport. Wrap that shit in aluminum foil before you go to the airport, so that the chip can't be scanned from a distance. I'm also suspicious of the new NC drivers licenses - the DMV claims they don't have RFID chips but I'd wrap it in foil anyway before putting it in my wallet.

I just got one for my baby and it took about 2 weeks. I was really impressed. Might be slower for others though.
3/27/2008 3:24:28 PM
i just applied a few weeks ago. i'm hoping it's returned within 4 weeks
