Have any of you just had the head on your driver just fly off when hitting with the driver? This has happened TWICE to me in the past 6 months, and I know it can't be the way I'm hitting the ball. Is this just incredibly bad luck (bought them at second swing golf), or do I have something terribly wrong with my drive swing? It's also only happened on the driving range, not out while playing.

yes, both times for me it has been a function of a weak spot in the graphite of the shaft.

I figured it had to be the club and not me, because it felt like such a good hitI know if I was hitting the ground and making it pop off I would have felt it that way
12/2/2006 6:38:56 PM
a few years ago it happened to me twice in one roundon consecutive holeswith two different drivers
12/2/2006 6:43:23 PM
stop buying your golf clubs at walmart
12/2/2006 6:43:42 PM
the second driver was my friend'sit was a wal-mart driver
12/2/2006 6:47:23 PM
yeah, stop being a cheapass
12/2/2006 6:58:37 PM
Yeah it happened to me because I threw up a golf ball and tried to hit it like a baseball bat. If you not a dumbass, the only problem is you have a miserable golf swing.
12/2/2006 7:29:06 PM
can't buy a game there folks, but don't buy ur shit at walmart and expect to shoot 72
12/2/2006 7:33:42 PM
You probably don't have a strong enough shaft for your swing speed
12/2/2006 7:34:51 PM
How old were the clubs? The epoxy they used to attach the head to the shaft might've been old and crumbling. Also, were the clubheads original to the shaft? Whoever put them on might not have done a good job mixing the epoxy.I've had this happen one time, and the clubhead I had wasn't original to the shaft. The hit felt very sweet, but I never saw the ball... only the clubhead flying about 15 yards downt he fairway. It happens, unfortunately.

this happened to my 3 wood a few weeks ago off the tee, no contact with the ground, but i hit a good shot, and the head fell off in my follow through. it was an adams tight lies club, under a year old, took it back to golf galaxy, they shipped it and had it back to me in a week and a half, sent me a brand new club
12/2/2006 8:53:57 PM
adams golf = shit
12/2/2006 9:03:08 PM
my big bertha driver's head came off at the driving range. good contact, didn't hit the ground and it was about a year old. just one of those deals i guess.
12/2/2006 9:51:31 PM
has happened to me on the range, as well. just once though.
12/2/2006 10:06:43 PM
yeh, it happened to me when i was hitting with my gf's driver once back in high school.
12/2/2006 10:16:20 PM
The head flew off my $40 driver when it was about 95 outside and the clubs had been sitting in the car for a while. The glue just sorta melted and a few swings into the driving range it flew off. Probably had something to do with hitting the right frequency as well.

Hahah I went out to Dick's tonight and there was a nice looking driver for sale for $29.99. It actually looked pretty nice. 440 CC head and it had a Winn Arrow grip on it. That grip is $6 by itself.

yesi bought a cheap set from wal-mart to learn on
12/2/2006 11:17:30 PM
I love how all the "golf pros" came in here and immediately said you were hitting wal-mart brand clubs.god forbid someone trying to learn the game go out and buys some inexpensive clubs. Damn if you're going to learn the one of the most expensive games out there, you should atleast put a grand into your equipment to start out.

I don't think that is what we are saying. He wanted to know why his shafts were breaking and we simply explained it. The best thing to do is to get a 2nd hand set that is still in good shape and start out with them.

Just be a baller and go get custom fitted for clubs at Carolina Custom, end of problem, end of discussion.
12/3/2006 2:52:27 AM
Yes, but the club belonged to the driving range. I think the club head went further than the ball.

12/3/2006 9:47:34 AM
They were from second swing golf They were both Big Bertha drivers
12/3/2006 3:06:30 PM
I've actually seen this happen to multiple big bertha drivers. Its really wierd but both broke off right where the shaft goes into the clubhead. If you're not very good, make sure you're not shanking the ball because I've also seen clubheads break when you hit the ball with the shaft....thats not good. Bad miss hits will also put more stress on the shaft, and graphite clubs are more sensitive to this. If you really like the driver, go spend little bit more on a new shaft. Dont pay more than 60 bucks if you're a beginner, but make sure you're getting a good product. btw...Callaway...while they have gotten better lately...is notorious for puting bad shafts into their clubs. A good shaft is worth it, but get your swing checked first so you get the right flex for you.

other golf driver thread was too old, and didnt think this was threadworthy but,I broke my old mizuno driver, and was looking for a replacement. Just an average golfer, so I am not really open to buying the new mx-500 new or used, but I did find a mp 001 460 cc used for 59.99. Just wondering if anyone had any feedback about this club?
2/3/2007 3:38:18 PM
you know, after the wal-mart talk herei thought i'd clarify my first post.it was a callaway, modded with a true temper shaft.i walked all the time at the time, and my bag had worn out some padding, and created the weak spot in the shaftyouve gotta be carefull with that
