http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=410462Ok so heres the full story...I went running one evening around ES king to campus... near the bus stop across the street from my house I noticed something that looked like money on the ground... I ran by it stopped and picked it up... It was in fact money... so I was like heh... and kept running, as I was running I checked out how much it was, I open part of it... and the first thing I saw was 100... I was like no way this is one of those stupid church pamphlet thingy's... so I flip it over and it was 2 $100 bills...at this point I'm like holy crap run faster the drug dealers are going to cap you... So as I was running I figured it had to be fake and I kept it in my hand figuring that the sweat would make a fake bill bleed... never did... then I tried to figure out what I should do... throw a party where all of my friends drank for free... make it a free month out on my boat... but then I also started thinking I found it in a pretty poor area... and somebody is deffinitly missing their $200 either for drugs or for their light bill... whatever... so when I got back home I decided to call the cops and turn it in... otherwise I would feel bad about spending somebodies utility money...Cops gave me a bit of a run around I got several stories from them... they basically weren't shure of the time before I could get it back should it go unclaimed... in between the time I called the cops(no I didn't use 911) and the time they got there my friend who just finished law school called me back and told me that if there were no markings and no envelope that in NC that money is free and clear mine... RPD made me turn it in anyways... I never expected to see it again expecially since I was moving(have moved) to MD...well it takes 6months before unclaimed evidence gets returned to the finder... 5/22/06 I found it and today I got to pick it up(well I signed for it to be released to somebody that will get it to me and they picked it up)...So christmas money ala RPD

ahahah its funny, b/c I was just having a conversation with a friend about this and I didn't even know it originated from my thread...ok if its somebody elses money its theirs outright... it doesn't matter what they are going to use their gross worth to accomplish its still their money and they should get it back... think of it as going back into their gross worth... and then they get to choose what to do with it...just like, RPD was required by law to give me the money back... I could have walked into the station told them that I was going to use it to get 100 freshmen drunk... but they would still be required to give it back to me... it would be their moral and legal obligation to see that the money was not used for wrongdoing, and they would probably follow me and wait for me to commit the crime before busting me... innocent until proven guilty...I gave it back... I turned the money in, waited the alotted time... and then I free and clear got the money back... I went above and beyond what the law of north carolina said I had to do considering there was absolutely no way to figure out who the money belonged to, I would have been within my legal rights to just pocket it...I make really decent money now... even so if I were to loose $200 out of the blue I would be pissed and looking for it... I'm not sure if your talking about sweating getting killed over $200 or what... I was mostly joking, but people get mugged for $20 all the time... I just didn't say "somebody was missing their drug money OR utility money" I choose to look at the brighter side and think that the money would have been for a good purpose... property is property and whats yours is yours and you have the freedom to choose what to do with it. I just think that's awesome from an ethical standpoint, good job man, shows some hope for humanity.

yeah i wouldnt take any shit off them about what they think. thats some good karma right there. i just wonder if its gonna be the exact same bills. i guess so, they should find a way to put that cash in a 6 month CD

is finding shit taxable, I mean if you go through the proper process like that theres a record of it right?
12/1/2006 10:30:28 PM
good question, i'd imagine anything over a certain amount is taxable. just like gambling and contract work

it seems strange to me to turn in money because it isn't distinct like a necklace or ring. i mean when i go to claim it i say yeah the two greens one hundred dollar bills with the number 100 on both sides? who goes to the police to see if anyone turned in dollar bills. gg on being honest but i think it was a waste of time for you and the police.
12/2/2006 11:27:24 PM
the police put it in their bank account, and collected interest on it for 6 months.

i would never have given the 200 bucks to the po'poit's 200 buckssucks for the person that lost it but tough tits

I found $80 in an envelope with a bunch of coupons and stuff at the grocery store. I felt bad because the person who lost it probably needed it more than me. I did leave a "found money, call xxx-xxxx" note at the customer service area of the grocery store. After a few days I figured it was mine.
