is it bad to run after working out? I know you're supposed to run before you work out, but should you let your muscles break down and rebuild before you do aerobic stuff or does it matter?

running before working out is good because you get your blood moving before you start strainin your muscles. I'm just not sure if running afterwards will be bad for your muscle breakdown or not.

if your goal is to gain muscle, don't run before or after. Spread them out like run in the morning and lift in the evening or vice versa. Or, lift 3 days a week and run on off days.

why are you doing cardio for warm ups? warm up with dynamic stretching and light sets for weight training.

yeah, so after lookin at articles online apparently I should be doing a 5-10 minute warmup, lifting, then do a 20-30 minute cardio. It doesn't burn muscle to do cardio afterwards, only burns the rest of your carb stores and then starts with the fat.

Question: Is it good to lift weights and do 20 minute cardio right after lifting to lose fat and gain muscle??

Answer: If you do cardio alone without some other type of exercise before, it takes your body about 20 minutes before it starts to burn stored fat for energy. Before that time, you are utilizing blood glucose for energy primarily.

But if you weight lift before you do your cardio, your will reach that point where the body starts to burn fat for energy a whole lot quick. So definitely do your cardio after lifting in order to help lose body fat. "

I also get that doing it everyday isn't good for people tryin to get huge. but I dont wanna get huge, i just wanna get big & cut.

HIIT ftw

and seriously...you're not going to get huge unless you eat a lot over maintenance

you're also not going to get "big and cut" with out either good genetics or a solid diet and patience

HIIT is nothing but typical bodybuilder mentality extended to running. It's a lot easier to sprint for a short period of time than it is to develop endurance. Aren't you just tricking your body into a forced metabolism?

find me a person who can't run faster speeds over shorter periods of time... and I'm not talking about marathoners versus sprinters. just an average person.

I don't think it's "bad", but I don't think it's an equal subsitute for running in terms of exercise. I think it's more of a metabolic jump start. Which is fine if you care about trimming fat and not cardiovascular health.

I mean this as in I don't wanna get huge and I don't wanna be skinny and just cut, I'll go with the medium. As jacked as I can be while still having a sculpted look. It's not a hard principle.

granted you are not training for a marathon, but it is effective for improving cardiovascular health

Getting big doesn't happen over night. Getting bigger and trimming body fat doesn't happen overnight. They are especially not going to happen if you diet and training is wrong and you run 45 minutes a day forcing catabolism.

I'm a big fan of running after lifting. I'm definitely about as cut as I'm going to be while still maintaining a decent amount of size.

I would suggest getting "big" first, then work on cutting it up. It's hard to try and do both at the same if you don't already have a lot of muscle.

I've always wondered whats the point in working out and getting big. sure, being tone and able to bench and support your own body weight seems reasonable, but anything more than that seems a bit extraneous right? If you don't keep it up when youre 40, wont it all just become fat if you dont take time to focus on being tone?

To be able to perform life-saving physical feats that benefit society.

...No, it's actually just to show off.

If there was a physical way to demonstrate you can run a 6:00 mile, a lot more people would be trying to run 6:00 miles.

If you build good habits when you're young and keep it up, you will still see results at 40.

I don't know if this is the direction your taking this, but a lot of people are under the misconception that muscle turns into fat if you stop exercising. Muscle is muscle and fat is fat. You don't turn one into the other.

Yeah, but muscle requires a lot of calories and burns a lot i know, which increases eating habits right? I was going from the perception that if you don't use your muscles don't they reduce in size, but that some people keep up the same eating habits as while they were working out. I guess once again it just boils down to a balance of diet an exercise.

but that being said, what is the point of being super huge? Other than to laugh at me when I need someone to spot me for a 115lbs bench

high intensity interval training....sprinting for 1 minute (or however long) then jogging for 1 minute (or however long). It's just alternating between sprints and jogs with the jogs being your "rest" between sprinting intervals. It helps train speed and endurance and breaks up the monotany of a jog

^^I've also heard that it helps you burn calories/fat better than regular running. Is that true??

I've always thought about trying it, but I'm at the point where I'm trying to reach goals in my "distance" running, so HIIT wouldn't exactly help me reach those goals.

actually it would to begin with, it would get your muscles used to the rigors of it not to mention burning the calories you need. I wouldnt TRAIN that way the whole time thats for sure.

google HIIT and it will tell ya whassup

i run after work, like 8-10ish, of course in Texas we get cold spells but usually moderates pretty fast...although Thursday we might get some freezing rain(today it was 70ish). If it does sleet/freezing rain, the whole city will shut down. I think the High for Thursday is going to be 35 and windy, nice running weather.

I also have to get up at 4:30am for work(have to be there at 6am) so it is kinda impossible for me to run before work.
