just out of curiosity, in the opinion of those of you who know, what's the most reliable diesel engine in a car? i obviously know nothing about it, but i someone once told me that the diesels in the old vw bugs were rock solid because they were so simpleif you were looking for a diesel engine (and the car that goes around it) that will last for another 100 years, what would you look at?

11/28/2006 4:43:16 PM
probably actually, come to think of it, i believe he was referring to a regular gasoline engine
11/28/2006 4:51:34 PM
benz

???????[Edited on November 28, 2006 at 4:54 PM. Reason : .]
why are you asking tww?
11/28/2006 5:00:16 PM
why not? i'm not looking at buying anything, but my parents already make their own biodiesel for farm equipment, so i'd have a source of free fuel for a diesel beater to get around town in if i ever wanted to
11/28/2006 5:01:53 PM
11/28/2006 5:02:43 PM
old benz, new benz? i mean, i certainly wouldn't be buying a new benz to put homemade fuel in, but i assume the old engines were also solid?
11/28/2006 5:05:19 PM
rabbit diesel

I sold last year a 85 ford f350(international motor) w/ 600k on it never had problems with the motor. no turbo and not high hp much like many of the older diesels. the newer ones (at least pickups) are so tuned up they'll never last as long but can do much more too. of course you have your age old cat vs cummings vs benz debate for the bigger powerplants. I personally have 2 tucks w/ cat engines and 1 w/ a cummings and i prefer the cats because they have much more usable tourqe but cummings are good for generators and stuff- basically can't go wrong w/ any of the big diesels.
11/28/2006 5:19:18 PM
the old benz diesels last, the old VW ones do too
11/28/2006 5:20:34 PM
^^^^the older mechanical motors.^^he's talking cars, not trucks. oh, and it's cummins, not cummings.
11/28/2006 5:28:01 PM
Didn't nah325i's diesel golf have like 700k+ miles on the stock motor?Seems like this was it but maybe not:[Edited on November 28, 2006 at 5:33 PM. Reason : ]
11/28/2006 5:32:20 PM
yeah, you can't go wrong with either. the benz is just going to be a nicer package.

when I was thinking about hopping on the biodiesel/SVO bandwagon I was looking at the mercedes 300D turbo diesel... pimp, reliable, and not quite as slow as the turbo diesel[Edited on November 28, 2006 at 6:15 PM. Reason : *]

benzbut most Vdubs are reliableid say older benz though, early 80'sjust bought a VW caddy, gets around 60 mpg right now off diesel and we make our own fuel at about 35 cents per gallon.Truck has about 200,000 miles and runs like a charm.[Edited on November 28, 2006 at 6:39 PM. Reason : f]

I gotta say that the VW diesels are solid and reliable. I've had many friends who have owned them, and while the older normally aspirated ones have squat for power, they are very reliable. They use the Bosch VE pump, which is pretty damn reliable (I think more so than the Stanadyne/Roosa Master injection pumps). You know where my loyalty stands: Cummins all the way. The earlier ones like mine have the VE pump, which is okay for the engine, but the later ones ('94-early '98) with the Bosch P7100 pump are better in terms of solid reliability and compatibility with ultra low sulfur diesel and biodiesel.I'm not a really big fan of the International diesels with HEUI injection systems, though one positive is that they don't have a true injection pump, but rather use hydraulic amplification of fuel pressure using a high-pressure oil pump. The injectors and the damn injector driver are touchy spots on these. The engines with multicylinder annular injection pumps are going to be the most reliable, albeit greater polluters. Distributor-style pumps (that have either one piston/cylinder--Bosch-- or two--Stanadyne/Roosa--) are not quite as reliable, as they have only one or two major pumping elements doing the work of multiple units in the former.New electronic stuff is really cool stuff, but I don't know if I would chance them to biodiesel unless you bought it commercially or really had a handle on your process.

My grandfather had a 300D turbo diesel he bought new in the 80's. He had that car for 20 years. Not one single problem, except when he tried to resell it. He was trying to sell it for what he paid 20 years ago... He didn't understand depreciation...
11/28/2006 8:07:25 PM
biggest difference i've seen b/w benz diesel & vw diesel25mpg vs. 45mpg..
11/29/2006 10:30:39 AM
anyone have an old vw diesel they'd like to sell me for cheap?
11/29/2006 10:33:23 AM
good luck with that.. check around on ebay, ncdubs.com, vwvortex.com, or craigslist...
11/29/2006 10:53:36 AM
If he bought a new Benz back in the 80s, he probably knows a little more about money than you do. But yea go hit a deer.
11/29/2006 12:56:28 PM
300D is the most unreliable diesel ever, I will never work on one ever again, much less own one
11/29/2006 1:03:49 PM
11/29/2006 1:46:59 PM
jesus christmercedes is what you want. the vw cars may be just as reliable (MAY be) however the rest of the fucking car falls apart around them. also, for the record, the new mercedes diesel v6 holds the world record for endurance testing, something like 100k miles at an average speed of 140mph. not that that is relavent or anything. there are certian normal wear parts on the MB's that you need to replace like throttle linkage bushings and what not, and there are people out there who know how to get some more power out of the old dogs to keep driveability up. but dont expect 0-60 to be on par with most other vehicles.you want an 80's 300D. i would avoid the turbo for simplicity reasons, although it will be faster. IF the turbo is working.you could go all the way up to a w124 chassis and get a e300d. i doubt you are willing to spend that much. the 95 models got the good 6cyl engine and the good boxy body.[Edited on November 29, 2006 at 2:39 PM. another thing to consider is when the (older) vw breaks, it'll be a cheap fixwhen the benz breaks... well...
11/29/2006 3:36:54 PM
oh ye of little faith. old benz parts cost no more than old vw parts.
11/29/2006 3:48:55 PM
tis truethe 300D was one of the highest produced MB carsthe turbo is by far NOT the way to godont expect them to accelerate though they are basically a tank with wheels, i mean they are like solid steel reallythe VW back home has little power anyways to get up and go but who cares we dont need it for that. thats why we have the cummins
11/29/2006 3:55:23 PM
HAHAHALOL @ "thats why we have the cummins" yeah i know they can make tons of power but man thats funny to here
11/29/2006 4:03:59 PM
i want a cummins bad
11/29/2006 4:08:41 PM
yeah i always wanted a cummins powered power wagon (the soft top model) on 52" xmls
11/29/2006 4:35:49 PM
i want a 1994-1998.5 extended/crew cab dually w/ an nv4500 and a cummins. i think i'd wet my pants
11/29/2006 4:38:13 PM
I would stipulate either the early '80s Benz 240D or the mid '90s Cummins found in the Dodge Trucks.

this could go under videos too...but check out this fifth gear test of an old mercedes diesel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bIV_hHPAFQ there are a total of four videos in the test. they are pretty impressive videos. also shows that merc diesels are pretty bomb proof
11/30/2006 11:32:17 AM
holy hell those videos were incrediblea bomb and it still ran, that was pretty damn amazing to me.and the girl was fairly hot.
11/30/2006 2:54:45 PM
the 4th video was kinda odd, there were three explosions throughout the car, and way too much fire. me and bcsawyer saw a video of 100lbs of amfo ? under an old monte carlo, the only thing left was the engine and trans, and some motormounts, the rest was gone. I think they faked that part.
