Wow, I'm stunned.

My prayers are certainly with her. It's hard to imagine NC State Women's Basketball without her at the helm.

when i first saw this thread i thought maybe she was taking time off from basketball to support that Gay Rights campus group but im sad to hear its a reoccurence of cancer.

Womens basketball is the 3rd leading sport in terms of revenue producer so Fowler has been in an awkward spot the past 5-10 years. Its tough to fire her because shes a legend but our womens team has been so bad for awhile now that its probably time for her to step down permanently.

Women's basketball is the 4th most important sport. Over mens soccer.

Yeah I just saw that on gopack.com, definitely shocking. I hope she can fight it off again, I can't imagine an NCSU woman's basketball team without Kay Yow at the helm.

Huh?

'03-04: 17-15 (8-8 Conference)
'04-05: 21-8 (10-4 Conference)
'05-06: 19-12 (7-7 Conference)

I don't have the media guide to go further back, but the past three seasons haven't been bad. I don't see how you can say the women's team has been so bad for a while. She's a legend, not only here but across the country, and State should be proud to have her. The trouble is so few people even realize what goes on in Reynolds now that the men's team doesn't play there.

Much like Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Coach K, and others, she will not be fired. She will step down when she's good and ready, and everyone who gives a shit about NC State should thank her for all she's done here. Trouble is, most people on campus just don't care.

^ yeah, like i was saying the program has been way down since '01 when i got here.

We've been unranked and have had zero tournament success for a long time.

Hope you beat it this time Kay. If Fowler DOES fire her he just needs to immediately quit and burn his own house down before the fans do it.

Womens' basketball finished 5th in the conference last year behind duke, maryland, and UNC, all of whom made the final 4 of the NCAA tournament.

And Yow had a top 5 recruiting class for this season.

Some people are stupid as fuck.

Get well soon Coach Yow, I had the pleasure of meeting you my sophomore year at NCSU at the beginning of the UNC game @ UNC(which you guys won when the lady tarheels were ranked in the top ten)...she's a top notch lady, a hell of a coach, and I pray she gets better fast. It'll be GREAT when we find a cure for cancer!!

we play in one of the toughest conferences in the country, and have managed to get a great recruiting class. she is a great coach and all prayers should be out to her, the future seems extremely bright. at the end of the day, class has to count for something and our women's bball team has seemed to be a bright spot on our campus for some time now, regardless of the w and l's.

Being the 4th best team in BY FAR the best women's conference is a good thing. Kay hasn't lost her touch. She just signed an awesome class for this year and next year's looks promising too.

We are all behind you Kay.

She's pretty much the person who made women's basketball. Not only here, but nationally. She's built our program from literally nothing, and the only games she's ever missed coaching have been because of her battle with cancer. She's the first women's basketball coach to reach 650 career wins (only 7 other coaches have done so), has the second most victories, and second highest winning percentage in ACC history. She also started the Jimmy V Women's Classic with annually donates to cancer research. Her contributions to basketball, our University, and Cancer Research are totally unprecedented. She's a phenomenal woman, and I know she'll be back on her feet soon.

^ I can't say it much better than that, but I'll add a few things.

- Olympic gold medal teams: two of them, one as head coach and one as an assistant
- Gold medals at the Goodwill Games and World Basketball Championships

and most of all

- She's in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Not just the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (in), not just the Women's Sports Hall of Fame (in), not just the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (in)...she's in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. You shouldn't have to say anything else.

Get well soon, Kay. We're all praying for you.

"Yow Says Health Improving in Letter

Posted: Jan. 5, 2007

In a letter to her supporters, North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow says things are looking up in her battle against breast cancer.

In a letter posted on the school’s athletic Web site, GoPack.com, Coach Yow says blood tests completed two weeks ago show a reduction in the number of tumor cells in her body. She credits her grueling chemotherapy treatments, her positive attitude, and God for her improved condition.

"I really consider this a miracle and a healing touch by God on my body,” Yow wrote. “I know that God is working through my oncologist, Dr. Mark Graham, as he decides on the amount of drugs he uses for my treatment."

In her statement, Yow said her cancer battle has been an emotional strain on her team and the staff, and the way they've persevered is a testimony to their character. Currently, the team is 11-4, and still very much in the ACC title hunt.

Yow will undergo another round of tests Jan. 15 to confirm the results. If that happens, she says she'll have a very good shot at returning to coach the Wolfpack.

Yow left the bench in November to begin her cancer treatment. It's the second time in two years the disease has taken her away from her players.

Yow admitted the next round of tests might not produce the results she wants, but she says it's wonderful to get the first test results back and see the numbers drop.

"Wolfpack Coach Yow To Undergo More Tests

Posted: Jan. 15 at 8:18 a.m.

N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow is expected to have more tests Monday that could determine if she can return to the bench.

In a recent statement released by N.C. State, Yow said blood tests revealed the number of tumor cells dropped greatly.

In November, Yow announced her breast cancer had returned. She took an indefinite leave of absence.

Associate head coach Stephanie Glance is filling in for Yow.

Glad to hear she's doing better. Hang in there, coach!
