Basic background story:

I'm in PE101, professor gives exams over WebCT. He said final exam would be available during class time on Monday. We get this e-mail on Sunday night:

Quote :
"The final exam for your course will be available during the regular
class time on Monday, November 20th or Tuesday, November 21st.
The link
to the final exam will be located in the 'exams' folder on the WebCT
Vista course homepage. Remember: The link will only be available
during the scheduled class time.
If you do not see the link at that
time be sure to refresh your browser window.

There will be between 50 and 60 questions on the final exam. The
question formats are matching, multiple response, multiple choice and
true/false. You will have a maximum of 50 minutes to complete the exam.
The exam will be due by the end of the class time. LATE SUBMISSIONS
WILL BE PENALIZED 15 POINTS PER MINUTE!

You may take the exam from any location that you feel comfortable.
However, it it YOUR responsibility to confirm that the computer you
select is capable of accessing and using WebCT Vista. Do not wait until
the last minute to choose a location.

If you experience any problems accessing or submitting the exam please
contact me immediately using the online chat feature, email, or by
telephone. My contact information will be listed below."

So, from that e-mail, I am under the impression that he is giving an additional time for people to take the final on Tuesday during when our regular class meets (M-W at 2:35-3:20pm), so I log on Tuesday at 2:35pm to see nothing up. I frantically e-mail him and call him. This is his e-mail response:

Quote :
"Matt-

I'm afraid that you have missed the final exam. Today is Tuesday.
Your class meets on Monday at 2:35 PM not Tuesday. "

I talked to him over the phone and explained why I misunderstood him, but he said I was at fault. He said he was sending that to all his classes, including ones that meet on Monday and ones that meet on Tuesday. Fortunately, he will let me schedule a final in his office, written, with no extra resources, and it will be harder. While I'm somewhat angry at that, I am glad he's letting me retake it. However I still think he is partly at fault for the confusion, thoughts?

btw J_Hova missed it too for the same reason

I mean, if he had put "during the regular class time on Monday, or Tuesday DEPENDING ON WHEN YOUR CLASS MEETS"

I don't think the professor is at fault. his wording may not be the best, but I understood what he was saying the first time I read it. ultimately it is your responsibility to seek clarification.

making you take a more difficult, written final in his office isn't unreasonable.

you should have just done it during YOUR class time and you wouldn't be in this situation

procrastination is the devil...what was the point in waiting til Tuesday?

^ Because I can barely make the 15 minute walk to get to class from my previous class, to walk to my car and drive through midday traffic to my home computer would get me home at like 2:45ish, and I wanted the most time possible to take the exam.

^^ No, but I much rather would prefer to take it in my own home where I'm comfortable than a computer lab with people going in and out and talking and such. If I'd have known that I had to take it on Monday things would have been different.

Just admit it.

You were being a lazy fuck and you were like "oh i dont feel like taking this right now and if i act like i didnt understand the email he'll understand and let me take it later"

I dont believe for one second that you were surprised when you sat at the computer on tuesday and didnt see an available exam.

Dude, i understand. Im a lazy fuck too. Thats why i know exactly what was going through your head when you did this.

If you'd been a freshman you'd never have pulled this stunt, but being a 5th or 6th year senior you were like man PE is a joke i can get away with this and make it up later.

Makes sense, and that appears to be what happened.

But honestly theres no reason to get on brentroad.com and make this fake ass thread about what went down. You dont have to justify your lie to us, just to the professor.

Im a good liar so i recognize other liars from a mile away. You're about to deny everything i just said, but Im just telling you I know how things went down.

I'm honestly telling you the truth. Based on that e-mail I was sure he was offering us two opportunities to take the exam. I wanted to have plenty of time beforehand and not rush home from my class directly beforehand to take the exam. I'm frustrated that I misunderstood what he was saying, and I think he could have worded his e-mail better. In fact, here is the response I sent him to his e-mail:

Quote :
"Thank you for allowing me to make up the final exam. I will schedule a
time with you to retake it on Monday.

I hope you can understand the confusion in the sentence "during regular
class time Monday or Tuesday" and how it would cause me to think that the
exam would be available during two time slots. Looking back on it, I can
understand what you meant by the phrase, referring to your two classes,
however I think it could have been made a little more effective written as
such:

"The final exam will be made available during your regular class times on
Monday or Tuesday. This means that if your class meets Mondays and
Wednesdays, the exam will be available ONLY on Monday, and if your class
meets Tuesday and Thursday, the exam will be available ONLY on Tuesday.
Students who have class M/W will not be able to access the exam on Tuesday
and vice versa.""

his response to your last email should read:

Quote :
"the exam was scheduled on Monday, November 20th for your section, there will not be a make-up exam"

basically.. you should have left it at "Thank you for allowing me to make up the final exam. I will schedule a time with you to retake it on Monday."

The only reason I didn't is because of how short he was with me on the phone. He came off like it was 100% my fault for just being an idiot, and I was trying to explain to him why I was confused. I mean, he is a nice guy in class... it was really out of character for him.. maybe he had a bad day .

Probably because its college and you gave him a lame excuse for missing a final

He did say

Quote :
"during the regular class time"

which logically would be when you had class, at least that's how I would have viewed it.

Besides its a final exam, making assumptions about something like that without asking for clarification is dangerous, and you know what they say when people assume............

But as long as you're credit only it still shouldn't be that bad making it up if you at least know a little about the stuff.

^I'm taking it for a grade. As far as I know the exam will count fully, it will just be harder and I'll have to actually study for it.

Well, I swallowed my pride and I sent him an apology e-mail for the previous one, stating that I was just frustrated about the incident and that I appreciate him allowing me to take the exam again.
