now that MS has upped the ante in some respects, if i were you, i would wait for the next ipod; it would blow the zune to pieces.

the arstechnica review made me want to

ahahahahahhahathe sound of the release is deafing silence
11/17/2006 3:26:17 PM
yeah, i don't see the zune as an "ipod killer"...in theory it's potentially competitive, but they've got some major work to dostick with creative
11/17/2006 3:32:04 PM
^ I just bought a Zen Vision:M this past weekend. Killer little device, and it blows the video quality of the iPod away. I was considering waiting for the Zune to drop to do a little comparison before I bought....but then I realized how many consumer electronics products hit the market and are pieces of shit before about 16 firmware updates. I don't have time for that shit, and neither should anyone else.
11/17/2006 3:52:23 PM
played with one today, the thing is fucking huge.
11/17/2006 7:05:08 PM
picked one up to 'try' it before i return it...and i got OWNED...no vista support lolz
11/17/2006 10:35:08 PM
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/15/zune-review/read this before buying...doesn't sound like an iPod killer just yet
11/17/2006 11:22:53 PM
i dont think i can state enough just how large, and unrefined every edge on its casing is.
11/17/2006 11:34:07 PM
it looks pretty unattractive to mei doubt the software is anywhere near as good as applesthere isn't an aftermarket for it yeti'll pass
11/17/2006 11:47:06 PM
a what?.... exactly.
11/17/2006 11:48:00 PM
i don't like the sharing methodsounds like indian giving
11/18/2006 12:18:38 AM
3 day deletions sound pretty lame to me
11/18/2006 12:20:32 AM
I read on article on FoxNews or something similar...CNN? Anywho, they compared Zune vs iPod and iPod won out on almost everything. The Zune has a bigger screen and can be rotated 90 degrees to use the video viewer properly (landscape view). The casing isn't glass-type so it will resist scratches better and has a brown option for those who don't want it confused with an iPod. The interface is a lot better apparently. Many songs (about half) the user tried to share weren't shareable unless he 'rightclicked' on everysong due to some companies being iffy about the sharing license thing and therefore forbidding sharing rights. Then there's the physical and hard drive availability limitations, so you're pretty much not buying a Zune anyway unless you're going for 30/60 GB Video (I think those are the sizes). Also, no Mac support. lol.
11/18/2006 1:51:43 AM
if you put the zune in a casing of any sort it would not fit in your pocket without a struggle
11/18/2006 2:03:02 AM
fuck the mac support...where the hell is the Vista support????????????????????
11/18/2006 2:30:12 AM
rumor has it that there will be zune support by the end of the month for vista, and if they miss that deadline they def. said it would be supported before retail launch jan.30thi think the 2 things killing the zune are the 3/plays only for sharing, and the incompatible DRM not allowing you to play songs you've already purchased.i mean what ever happened to "plays for sure" windows marketing scheme?
11/18/2006 11:12:10 AM
well i guess i will just return the Zune until they start having support for Vista...then i will rebuy it and 'try' it out.
11/18/2006 4:13:02 PM
I was playing with one today... the interface is fucking terrible. The screen is all hype - the videos and images I looked at on it were blurry and pixelated. Also, they're massive, and like Quinn said, if you put it in a case you can kiss any pocket space goodbye. Plus, on top of all that..... they just look ugly. There's no way in hell MS will claim any market share from Apple if they keep down this route.

OMG!!! IT'S SO HUGE!!!
11/19/2006 2:31:14 PM
^Have you held one in person or are you just basing your comments off of photos? Its substantially larger in all dimensions and really makes a difference considering i thought it was to be a mobile media product.Note : I think it weighs less
11/19/2006 2:40:20 PM
i don't know if you're serious or not, but if it's any bigger than the current ipod, then yes, it is huge. this is because 1) the ipod is now setting the standards for size - if it's bigger than the video ipod, then it's too big, and 2) the video ipod itself is pushing the limits on size. If you go back and look at the 1G ipod or the first 4G (photo) ipods, they'll feel way too big. even though demision-by-deminsion, the zune is only slightly bigger, there are several things that make it look and feel even bigger than the ipod. The corners and edges are very boxy, which make it look larger. See the iPods metal corners? how rounded and smooth they are? that makes it easy to slide into your pocket. and the rounded edges along the backside make it feel smaller when holding it because your hands wrap around easier. The zune looks like a walkman with all its "sharp" corners and edges. for me, i don't know if I'll ever be able to use an MP3 player much bigger than a Nano again. I'm hooked on my Nano, even without video viewing. The nano is so light, I can make a lanyard out of the earphone cables and hang it around my neck, with only the earphone cable plug holding the nano up, and it's never come close to falling out.
11/19/2006 2:42:07 PM
heaven forbid they add a radio antenna and a wifi antenna a much larger LCD AND make it smaller... sheesh.i am hooked on my nano as well, but i like the fact that the zune has radio and will display cover art, something apple should have done a LONG time ago[Edited on November 19, 2006 at 2:57 PM. Reason : .]
11/19/2006 2:56:46 PM
there are other mp3 players that have radio and arent brick size, and i cant imagine album art requiring the unit to be largerand wifi is so crippled they should have just not added it[Edited on November 19, 2006 at 3:04 PM. Reason : .]
11/19/2006 3:03:43 PM
first of all i never said cover art has anything to do with size... second, the point was that they added 3 features that the other ipods don't have (especially the bigger screen) and i think it's unrealistic to say that it should be as small or smaller considering they probably had more stuff to cram into a smaller box... now whether they "should" have added those features is an ENTIRELY different story.
11/19/2006 3:42:14 PM
so wait, you can't put songs you've already downloaded onto your computer on there? like regular .mp3 files?
11/19/2006 4:15:51 PM
you can if they are DRM free, but if they have DRM already (like from itunes, napster, etc.) then no

i just bought a vision:mgot 30 days to try it out. this is kinda huge too - i might just get an iPod. i was so anti-bandwagon but it really seems to be the best one out there.
11/20/2006 9:20:55 PM
my point was simply it doesnt need to be so large. crippled useless wireless is not a very good excuse.
11/20/2006 9:42:15 PM
^ don't forget the FM radio. that is a crucial feature
11/20/2006 9:48:31 PM
yeah for when none of your "plays for sure" plays at fucking all[Edited on November 20, 2006 at 9:52 PM. Reason : .]
11/20/2006 9:52:29 PM
the wifi is crippled in software, not hardware. anyhow, its a compromise between size and cost. Wether that was the right decision is yet to be seen. If microsoft sells enough to get a market foothold, they'll actually design a custom zune device that will probably be a much better device. For another example of microsoft hardware success in a hostile market see xbox
11/20/2006 9:54:55 PM
unlike xbox "games" which have a limited amount of useful hardware (xbox, xbox360)mp3 files play onipods, irivers, zunes, sansa , creative , etc....
11/20/2006 9:57:15 PM
i'd say the main reason is the screen, it isn't the same as a cell phone's lcd and it's a LOT larger than the ipod's screen...
11/20/2006 9:57:34 PM
11/20/2006 10:00:28 PM
perhaps im just talking from my own personal opinionIm never going to watch a movie on a freaking tiny lcdIm never going to sit there and wait for a video to encode to wmv to watch itIm never going to buy files from a service that is somehow worse than itunes (was that even possible?)Im never going to wear cargo pants large enough to haul the thing around in (Shaggy)
