" The Yankees and Tigers have agreed on a Gary Sheffield trade, SI.com has learned.

In return, the Yankees will acquire highly touted right-hander Humberto Sanchez and Class A pitchers Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett, according to a Tigers source.

The Tigers will extend Sheffield's contract for two years beyond the one year and $13 million remaining."

Assuming Sheffield is healthy, then the Tigers did the right thing by trying to win now. The Yankees did what they needed to do and got some young arms. Sounds like a good deal for both IMO.

Sanchez will likely be their 2nd best starting pitcher next year

Wow. Good news for Detroit, Shef is pretty solid in O.

Next year will probably come down to Chisox/Detroit. I'm still hoping for the Sox to pick up a decent outfielder to lighten the black hole that is Anderson/Scotty Po.

I'm pretty sure the Yankmees are due for a down year in 2007. Everyone's getting old.

From what I hear the winning bid for Matsuzaka was b/t 38-45M and by the Red Sox. Solely to block teh Yankees from getting him.

I'm sure they'll go hard after Zito and Schmidt now. They will be fine with the $$$ Steiny will spend...

** That is the bid SOLELY to negotiate a contract with him. The seibu lions (sp?) are who gets taht money.. has nothing to do with the contract..

In my baseball expertise, i like to think I am the best at judging pitching and pitching mechanics

And from what I saw of Matsuzaka, barring an injury, he should at least be one of the top 10 pitchers in the AL over the next 5 or so years

All possible Rivera replacements

Some scouts have said they may need to convert Sanchez to a closer because his mechanics make him prone for injuries, similar to what the tigers did with zumaya.

I personally think he'll be ok. The he has lessened the torque he puts on his elbow

The Red Sox and the Yankees have the same basic strategy:
Spend $$, get talent, hope that talent equates to something.

What are they not doing? Developing their own talent... building team chemistry... focusing on the basics.

Tell you what. You take the roughly $250 I spent on White Sox tickets and go get remove scotty Po from the White Sox roster.

Win/Win

^ The Braves and White Sox should swing a deal to send Podsednik to the Braves for one of their young players. Maybe Podsednik would find his stroke again back in the NL and if nothing else he would give the Braves a leadoff hitter and a LF.

so the redsox had to pay around 40 million just to negotiate to pay more to the kid? dont understand how that works.....but hey, i am a novice when it comes to the japanese leagues

why don't colleges start making pro teams pay to negotiate with their top talent?

in the NBA, when a kid comes from europe, you just draft him, or wait until his contract runs up

In this case, he was under contract for 2 more years for Seibu or whatever. So they can choose to 'post him' for bidding to negotiate with him. Major league teams could bid in a sealed envelope for his rights, which doesn't mean they'll ultimately sign him. The highest bid is then sent to the Japanese team and they have 4 days to accept/deny the bid.

If they accept it then the winning team bid will be able to negotiate a contract with him. Olney said teh Red Sox had the winning bid but it turns out that might not be 100% yet..

so are they paying what the bid is? or is the bid just a start of negotiations?

how much did he have left on his 2 year deal. seems like they could have bought him out for less than 40 million. (unless this dude made 20mil a year in Japan, and in that case I would doubt that he would be headed to MLB)
