to get rid of the "detecting proxy settings" message do the following.Open up IE, Tools-Internet Options-Connections-Lan Settings remove the check next to Automatically detect settings.this setting shouldnt interfere with you getting connected to the internet, it normally disappears after a few seconds.
11/5/2006 11:18:28 PM
oh an under your device manager, click the plus sign next to "Network Adapters" and tell us exactly what you see there...if anything.
11/5/2006 11:19:52 PM
it says one thing..."nVIDIA nForce networking controller"
11/5/2006 11:21:09 PM
^^i did that but it didn't work
11/5/2006 11:25:18 PM
We need to figure out if it's your computer or a router issue first.-Start, Run, type "cmd", enter-Type "ipconfig"-Should have something that comes up saying "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection". Tell us the number that shows up in the "IP address" field.
11/5/2006 11:35:40 PM
Here's what it says when I go to the command screen and type ipconfig.... Connection-specific DNS suffix:Autoconfiguration IP address:169.254.222.169Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0Default gateway:

Is there anything under device manager that is reporting errors or unknown device? It sounds like your network card is not properly installed.
11/6/2006 10:57:44 AM
when i go to device manager and click on network adaptersit shows my network card and says everything is working properly
11/6/2006 11:26:51 AM
11/6/2006 11:35:25 AM
^i was wondering that tooit did that by default
11/6/2006 11:47:10 AM
I've had LAN2 on several computers before and the network worked fine. Not sure if its common. One of my motherboards has two network ports so the LAN2 makes sense for that one but some of the others I don't know why it used LAN2.Take this as a free bump I guess cause I don't know what I'm talking about.
11/6/2006 12:04:53 PM
the name doesnt matteryou can change ithave you checked the ethernet cable?
11/6/2006 12:54:43 PM
yeah i checked the cablei used it on my laptop and my girlfriends laptop
11/6/2006 1:51:32 PM
did you try plugging into another port on the router?what router do you have? is your computer the only one having issues connecting?
11/6/2006 2:24:04 PM
That name is common - it came from when he deleted the network card and reinstalled the drivers. This is almost always a network card issue when dealing with a home setup. It's a fresh install of Windows so I don't think it would be a winsock issue but I suppose it's always possible. Download and run this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.htmlLet it go through all of it's steps and then restart your computer. Try to get online after doing this. Let us know.

Try giving yourself a static IP and see if you are able to ping the gateway (your router).
11/6/2006 4:03:37 PM
^how do I do that?btw..thanks for the help so far engrishi hope i can get through this damn thing
11/6/2006 4:06:15 PM
Go into Control Panel - Network Connections - Right click on your Local Area Connection (I think yours is 2) - Go to Properties.Once inside the properties of the connection double click on "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)"Select "Use the following IP address" and enter in a valid IP on your network. You can run the ipconfig program on your laptop to get all of this information. eg. 192.168.0.100Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is the address of your router. This will also show up in the ipconfig on your laptop. After doing this you can hit OK to the screen and work your way back out of the control panel. Once you're back to your desktop click on Start - Run - CMD - hit enter. At the dos screen type "ping 192.168.0.1" where the IP address is your gateway. Hit enter. This hopefully will reply back. If it does then we know its a problem with DHCP which is easily fixed by assigning yourself a static IP. If it does not then we will have to troubleshoot the issue more.

^when I did all that it said "Request timed out"should I type anything in for DNS server?because there is nothing there when I check the status[Edited on November 6, 2006 at 6:34 PM. Reason : sdfdf]
11/6/2006 6:32:07 PM
anyone else have any ideas?
11/6/2006 10:02:07 PM
You wouldn't need DNS set to ping the router. There is likely something wrong with the drivers to your network card or the network card itself.
11/7/2006 8:21:21 AM
Unplug the ethernet cables going into the router first, then replug them in(Don't ask me but this actually worked for me one time when I had a similar problem). If that doesn't work, try restarting the router.
