at risk of getting locked, I post here in the loungeif anyone wants some trees (poplar, etc ... not trees) the plan to come get them this weekend because whatever needs to go is going today or tomorrow whether we cut them down or someone transplants them. I live near Fuquay - I hear it's teh leg's old stomping grounds, so if you know where he lives you're not far off.

well, if you can identify the nut, you can identify the treeWe've got these ... THINGS. At first we thought black walnut, because they're black/brown and difficult to crack. Inside there's something that tastes like a walnut, but doesn't look like one. They're definitely edible. We also get a rather attractive homemade stain when we boil the shells When I googled hickory nut, I did get something that looks about right ... If these are in fact hickory, I can tell you they aren't growing in the "danger zone" but you are welcome to hunt through the woods and dig them up. I don't care, and neither does the farmer who owns that tiny strip of woods. That said ... Someone's coming tomorrow for a bunch of baby mimosa. May or may not be leftovers. There are some scattered pines, some maples (silver and/or sugar I think), some sycamore ... and they're all at LEAST 8 feet tall, and "wild" as opposed to being planted intentionally. There are some smaller ones in the woods but that's not my property. I don't care if you go back there and I doubt the farmer does either. We're digging/cutting tomorrow so if you want something PM me. I have a truck, but I ain't delivering for free, and probably not at all tomorrow. Bring your own pots/burlap, dirt, shovels, etc.

they're not, they're really not big enough. They're maybe a little bigger than golf balls (including that outer husk)

The second pic is definitely shagbark hickory nuts (with the hull). The first pic looks like the actual nut without the hull of a shagbark as well.Just in case you were looking for that information. Carya ovata[Edited on November 4, 2006 at 12:29 AM. Reason : ]
