I hear Fruity Loops is similar, but I don't know how true that is, or how free fruity loops is.

I've used Adobe Audtion and it is pretty similar. It used to be called Cool Edit Pro.[Edited on November 3, 2006 at 3:18 AM. Reason : .]

yea alot of editing and a bit of looping other sounds/tracks/beats to make new sounds and stuff, just to basically get some experimenting and screwing around on.

i don't know anything about music, but one of my friends who was big into this stuff always talked about cakewalk.

yeah, there's seriously a shitload of programs out there to do this shitfruity loops, cakewalk, Acid (which is published by Sony now), Adobe Auditionfor just fucking around, I'd try and find an old version of cool edit pro or Acid. I'm pretty familiar with both of those and they're both straightforward as hell.

The actual Acid program will do this, but Acid is also a file format that you can find almost any genre of sample library in. Because it's so prevalent, other, cheaper programs like the basic Cakewalk sequencer will load Acid sample files directly into the sequencer tracks for playback and sound editing.
