^^ ACM International Collegiate Programming Contestwow 2 teams from NCSU and they can only solve 1, equivalent to meredith.whereas both duke & vt with 2 teams can solve 8and UNC with 2 of their teams can solve 6pathetic... and you should care, we are an technical school.[Edited on November 1, 2006 at 9:59 AM. NCSU team has done better (not great, but better) in the past. So far as I know, the department hasn't put a whole lot of effort into this either. Would take a good amount of additional resources (mostly people, some $$$) to significantly up the standings. In the past, a course (CSC295M IIRC) was offered the semester of the competition, but I don't see it listed now.

sorry for the typo, yes i'm very well aware of the a/an rule in grammar.
11/1/2006 11:19:23 AM
Um, maybe in Architecture you just learned theory, but for the rest of the design school, it's very much a theory->implementation process. The problem in CSC is that application is (or was) such an afterthought, when it really should be an integrated part of the theory. The CSC department hasn't ever done particularly well in any competitions. Just happens there are those 5-10% of kids every year who are ridiculously talents and go off doing crazy stuff to make the department look good.

^that wasn't in reference to CSC^^yes all the design school it is very much a theory->implementation process, but in architecture implementation isn't just as easy as applying what you know "theory" wise to an application, there's a much larger scope of technical knowledge that is needed that isn't taught.[Edited on November 1, 2006 at 11:55 AM. ^it's you're. this is the internet, you should know grammar doesn't apply here, and typos are in abundanceit's not like I'm an English major and i just scored poorly in an English competition, damn.if you want to get picky, go ahead and score the number of sentence fragments that are on TWW...[Edited on November 1, 2006 at 12:03 PM. what exactly is the point of correcting another's use of the english language when both of you are college level or beyond and the forum used for communication has absolutely nothing to do with the proper use of the english language?

i can agree with that, however that stuff bothers me a lot less than the intentional use of "r", "u", "2", etc as word replacements ... everyone has their pet peeves i suppose.

NC State actually does offer a lot of really good CSC classes.Nobody takes them because they look at the grade distribution and shit their pants.
11/1/2006 2:55:17 PM
^Yep. I did that and it was a mistake. I also got a minor in PSY, which was a good waste of unrestricted electives. That being said, I also blame NCSU's magnetic attraction to Java and ignoring low leveling programming. The only course that was required to do memory type stuff was 236, which many people accepted a bad grade for and just moved along to more courses which ignored so many key background aspects of programming. The year I took Operating Systems, my stupid teacher taught it in Java. Fantatic, a course about OS's that completely ignored all types of memory management. I also took a class taught by Healey that was taught in C/C++. Basically, we learned how to sort/store lists of millions of items when memory was not big enough to read the entire list (not even close) by dynamically editting files instead. We had to skip to different parts of the file and act like it was divided into blocks. Great course. Was taught in Java the year after I took it though.People need to learn that hardware should not be required to make up for the downfalls of software.
