Can anyone recommend some good brands of pipe tobacco?

I bought some croakin' frog today, which was decent, but I figure there must be others.

And, the dude at the fair makes some really good damn cyprus pipes.

Pipes by George is the place. I've been buying from him for 9 years whenever I'm in town.

There are two basic types of pipe tobaccos, Virginia blends and English blends. The former being defined by the prominence of broad leaf "Virginia" type tobaccos and the latter having a tobacco called "Latikia" which back in the day came from Egypt and was burned over burning camel shit. Or so go the lies I've been told.

George has lots of canned blends (Blue Note, and any Virginia by McBaren's are my recommendations) as well as bulk tobacco which is great simply because you can smell it before you buy it.

Coming from campus his store is right off Hillsb., past the IHOP right before the road Y's. Go right like you were going to City Limits and park in the tiny parking lot right there.

And don't ever smoke you pipe in public if you're under 45, it makes you look like a pretentious asshole. Unless you are one, then by all means . . .

Yah, whisky doesn't go with beer.

Can anyone give me some lighting tips, I seem to have bought an unburnable pinch.

not really whiskey...smoking anything kills my tastebuds

may find some info in here: http://www.pbgeorge.com/page101.html

it usually takes me 2-3 lights to get one going

if you are having lightening problems that probably means one of two things

1) you probably packed the bowl too tightly which means air can't allow for the tobacco to burn properly

2) You probably didn't toast the bowl of tobacco once filled in the pipe....what that means is that you have to lightly burn the top layer of tobacco then tamper it down just a tad. This way when you go to light the bowl to smoke it will create a perfect round cherry.

A tamper is a small medal tool used to pack pipe tobacco and push the cherry of coals down further into the tobacco to get the fresh tobacco at the bottom of the bowl burning

Pipes by Georges Best Tobacco isn't on sale by the way....Ask for his own personal blend in the humidor....Tell him Bradley B sent ya...he will hook you up

I've always liked any of the Mclellands blends, but with pipe tobacco, you don't need the expensive stuff. Just keep trying different ones. I've been smoking a pipe for years but I still don't smoke the same type of tobacco regularly. I like to change it up a lot.

Supposedly it is fairly cheap to try different varieties since smoking a pipe for an hour burns less than $1 worth of tobacco.

The pipes are where the majority of the investment seems to be.

that's true, but you can find a lot of good, inexpensive pipes. you can also get good bulk tobacco for 2 or 3 dollars an ounce and probably less than that.

J.L. WEase makes some good pipe tobacco.....on cold mornings like this it is absolutey a great feeling to smoke a pipe because it just gets the day going and warms up your entire body. A great thing to do is get Pipes magazine from george and read the taste testing the mag has. That way you know what type of tobacco you aregetting into

So, I heard dripping whisky in the tube of the pipe gets the flavor rolling.

Not exactly....smoking the pipe on theregular and when done withthe bowl shake the ash up anddown..over time it produces a cake buildup that gives the pipe protection and flavor
