Ok watching Saving Private Ryan what was the deal with Capt. Miller's (Tom Hanks) hand?

Was it Parkinson's disease?

That or his nerves are shot from teh war.

It doesnt happen all the time which leads me to beleive that it isnt a disease so much as stress.

If your looking for an answer I dont think you are ever given one other than you see his hand shaking.

nah, just shell-shock i think.

my grandfather has something similar. He was knocked deaf for 2 weeks in WWII and again in Korea from close fire, or something. Anyway, when he has to do something dexterous, his hands shake like crazy. If he works at it really hard, or uses both hands, he can keep them kind of steady.

they are trying to hold it so they can mount on offensive attack from there....blowing it up was a last resort just so the germans couldn't use it.

The writer felt the need to make his character more believable and sympathetic to the audience and therefore displayed a sign of weakness in him.

^^^ they were trying to hold it to protect the flank of the invasion

engineers could have replaced the bridge in a few hours.

Wrong. They didn't want to blow it unless they absolutely had to because you can't just rebuild a bridge like that in a few hours.

Else, why were brdiges sooooo important to fight over and hold? Why did we blow them all up except that one they were defending and one other?

They were trying to hold it so that they could use it and the enemy could not.

we werent talking about that guy, thats obvious...im talking about the guy that they capture in the middle of the movie where they want to kill him but captain miller says no and they group argues with eachother. captain miller then lets the german soldier go...

im saying that guy that they let go in the middle of the movie is the same german that kills joe (the jewish guy)

yeah, no shit.
that should have been obvious the first time you saw it. that's what sent the jewish guy off in a rage, IIRC.

they spared the german's life at the machine gun, yet he spares opum's life at the staircase, then is subsequently killed at the end of the movie. such is the way of war, as one's friend may be one's foe at a later point in time. hence, the lessons of hesitation and of civilian logic and reason do not apply on the battleground. opum was initially the civilian perspective, however, you see the path in how atrocities and war crimes are commited by the end of the movie by potentially anyone.

if i was in a war time like such, i dont think id spare peoples' lives just for that reason...id be like what the troops thought seargent spears "did" in band of brothers...

that person you let go would just go on to fight another day and kill some more of your own troops

are you kidding me, opum 'spared' the german again in the staircase b/c he was too much of a coward to shoot him. the german didnt have a gun out and opum had a rifle pointed right at him. he also had a chance to save the other guys life if he had charged up the stairs and shot the german while they were fighting.

Retards:
'Steamboat Willie' was a German gunner who they captured and then released
German 1 Stabbed Jewstein and walked down the stairs, smirking at Upham as he passed him
Upham later murders Steamboat Willie after, witnessed by Upham while hiding, Willie shoots and kills an American soldier. Willie thinks he's got it easy and tries to ease Upham, saying "Upham" in a "Hey it's me, how've you been buddy!" tone. Upham, disgusted and feeling probably betrayed, then shoots Wilile.

Willie != German 1

I have no idea how some people have misconstrued this.

yall seen Sniper 4? haha its lame, one of those unintentional comedies during some points...but one of the themes is that tom berenger's trigger finger is all malfunctioning because of some muscle or tendon but it reminded me of hanks' hand

Madman you're wrong. I just watched it in the DVD version

Same face, same uniform, same scar on the cheek.

The BOOK may be different but the movie obviously intended us to know it was the same person.

^wtf are you talking about opum doesn't get killed

the german that kills joe is not the same one that they capture and let go earlier in the movie.

that guy was someone else. if it was the same guy why was there no recognition between he and opum on the staircase after killing joe?

the guy that opum killed at the end was the same german that capt miller let go and who later shot miller while miller was on the bridge.
