HD trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount_vantage/babel/
IMDB: http://imdb.com/title/tt0449467/

In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out – detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief.

In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost – lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves – as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams). Written by Guillermo Arriaga (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada) Starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael García Bernal, and Kôji Yakusho.

I am so excited to see this movie. Amores Perros is one of my favorite films of all time, and 21 Grams was my second favorite film of 2003. Iñárritu is the master of dark, interconnected storytelling, and this film looks like it will fit that mold perfectly. It's beautifully shot, the cast is great, and the script should be awesome. I feel like I'm getting my hopes up for this, but I don't think I'll be disappointed.

I've heard some things about us getting it around November 10th. Im looking at the HUGE! cardboard stand we got the other day. Scientists are thinking of making it the eighth wonder of the world. Imagine that? the eighth wonder of the world right here in cary!

Look out ghostrider, they now have asians, mexicans and tourists facing the enviorment, how will you compete!

The only reason it isn't going to get a 10/10 on i<3movies.com is because of Collin Clifton Jr's character

This just in: EVERYBODY SUCKS.

Babel basically bombed in the triangle. It was doing incredibly well on a limited number of screens last week, but it hardly sold any tickets in NC.

And that makes me a saaaaaad panda

The Queen, on the other hand, is gonna pay for all my illegitimate kids' educations. The lesson learned: never underestimate the elderly.

that's really strange.

but also a little understandable. it's like: how often do i want to see requiem for a dream? great movie sure, but when am i REALLY in the mood to be depressed about a movie, no matter how awesome? (i know it's not exactly the same thing, but it's along the same lines).

ok i was just not looking forward to it being some political commentary. But i guess the different scenes happening in different places and then coming together in the end does happen in Babel like in Syriana?

there's definitely political commentary there. it's more implied than in syriana where it was the main point of the movie.

Finally got around to seeing this movie and thought it was really well-done. However, I thought the link to the Japanese subplot was a HUGE STRETCH, and I would've liked more explantation about the implications of the Japanese hunter giving the Moroccan man the gun.

Also, I don't understand all the people making comparisons between this movie and Crash. I would've NEVER even thought to compare the two movies if other people had not been doing so. I mean, they both utilize inter-connecting story lines... but Crash is much more direct and blatent in the way it addresses race relations. Babel involves characters of different ethnicities and addresses ethnocentricism... but I wouldn't describe it as a movie about race relations, cross-cultural relations, etc. Thoughts?

^^ Craig D. Lindsey actually writes some funny reviews whenever he's slamming a film. I'm surprised to see him dislike Babel so much though. Guess he only likes happy films.

i wasn't too big on this movie...it was worth a rent, but no crash imo...here is another local review

Quote :
"Babel is brought to you by the same guys that made 21 Grams. This is easily their biggest film to date. I like it when “new” talent starts making big movies. The directing is quite impressive. Some of the shots in this film really add to the movie, especially the Tokyo story line. The acting is another thing that makes this movie enjoyable. There are some well knowns (Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett), but the rest of this international cast is just as talented. I was a bit surprised to see Gael Garcia Bernal (Stephane from The Science of Sleep, Bad Education, etc) with a decent role, and even known actors such as Michael Pena (World Trade Center/Crash) and Clifton Collins Jr (plenty of stuff) playing relatively small roles. The casting for this movie is huge, which such a vast variety of characters.

Babel is this years “why can’t we all get passed our cultural differences and just respect each other” movie. There probably isn’t a revew about this movie that doesn’t mention 2004’s Crash. There are plenty of similarities. Both movies are about cultural differences and ignorance. Both films have multiple story lines within the movie, that all connect or have more in common than you might think. Both films have a decent cast (Babel more so) and are well made. So, it’s understandable that a lot of people are going to label Babel as “this year’s Crash”.

I really liked this film. I think it’s a bit more intelligent and doesn’t dumb down the theme or idea for it’s audience by making things obvious. There are basically 3 or 4 stories that place in this film. All of them unique but similar at the same time. Watch it! "
