So after making the Godfather 2 thread, http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=435892and then reading the top 25 crime movies thread http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=435831I broke bad and bought Goodfellas knowing nothing about it besides people consider it to be better than Godfather Parts I and II.Well I thought the movie was great, staying up way past when I needed to go to bed so I wouldnt be tired at work this morning. I liked the way the story had narration and followed the story of Henry Hill from his beginning. As bad ass as I thought De Niro was in the Godfather Part II, he was just as badass in this movie. As far as how it compares to Godfather I and II, if I had to make a pick, as close as they are, I would probably take Goodfellas. I also thought it was funny seeing almost the entire cast of the Sopranos in the movie, which is probably my favorite show on tv.here is the old thread from TreeTwista10 and some quotes about Goodfellas...http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=360200

Good movie. But The Godfather I & II > Goodfellas.
10/12/2006 10:35:09 AM
Yeah...great movie, but not as good as Godfather I and II. And even though they are both "mafia" movies...they really are completely different. And Pacino in Godfather(I and II), pwns De Niro in Goodfellas. He's a different kind of evil.
10/12/2006 10:36:25 AM
yeah they are very different, and not exactly easy to pick a favorite because of thatbut as far as watching over and over, I would have to go with Goodfellas

My dad's name is Henry Hill, and my sister's name is Karenthat is all, I would like a cookie pls, but you can't touch me
10/12/2006 11:57:17 AM
the only gripe I have about this movie is lorraine bracco. she’s an ok actress, but she has that horrible monotone voice. “i have to admit, it turned me on.” that shit drove me crazy.
10/12/2006 12:10:07 PM
wait wait, you just now saw Goodfellas? What if I told you I have a time machine so you can go back before everyone in the world saw it,is that something you might be interested in?
10/12/2006 12:20:57 PM
10/12/2006 12:32:49 PM
I would call Goodfellas more of a "mob" movie, versus "mafia"and I think there's a significant difference. They're both about organized crime, but on two totally different levels

Yeah, you just now saw that? Everyone should be made to watch it, as it is the best movie ever.
10/12/2006 5:06:41 PM
A great soundtrack too.The scene with the piano coda from "Layla." When I first saw this film and for a little while afterwards I could not determine what artist it was. I eventually forgot about it and didn't think about it again for years. A month or so ago I finally heard the full version of the song and associating it with that particular scene just made hearing it all the more powerful. Goosebumps I tell ye.
10/13/2006 1:58:44 AM
Yeah thats the scene where Jimmy has had everyone killed, I watched the special features last night and they were talking about how when they were adapting the book to the script, Scorsese already knew what songs he wanted and where in the movie he wanted to use them. That song is truely powerful in that scene.Im going to go out now and get "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver"other Scorsese and De Niro hookups"Mean Streets""The King of Comedy""Casino"[Edited on October 13, 2006 at 8:17 AM. Reason : actually, after reading imbd.com, I am probably going to buy all of these movies]

I just talked to one of my friends, he watched the Departed last nightsaid: "A++++ would watch again!!!"^ but I buy movies just for the hell of it, especially when I find a director or Actor combo I like (ex. Kevin Smith)... and it seems De Niro and Pesci are scheduled to be in another movie soon called "The Good Shepard" or something like that I think...
10/13/2006 9:17:18 AM

Goodfellas is definitely one of the greatest movies ever made.Brilliant storytelling, use of music, acting, and that long, continuous shot through the Copacabana is absolutely amazing. I've seen it numerous times and I always catch something new whenever I watch it. The Godfather movies are very good, but they just don't flow like Goodfellas does. This was, in my opinion, one of Scorcese's last great films. Casino is what I consider his last one. It's about 90% as good as Goodfellas is.Everything Scorcese has done since just hasn't been as gripping. Gangs of New York and the Aviator were really good, but just don't stick with you like Goodfellas (or Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, etc.) does. Likewise with The Departed. It was really entertaining and I don't feel like I watched a bad movie, but it really wasn't great either.
10/16/2006 8:14:44 PM
Taxi driver $14.99Raging Bull $9.99Casino $9.99

well every other movie listed in here is either a martin scorcese movie, or one of the best movies of all time (godfathers).and then somebody just pulled scarface out of nowhereyou know what, i just realized you are probably talking about Once Upon a Time in America, which, while it still doesnt exactly fit the thread, make ALOT more sense to be mentioned.i dont even know what once upon a time in NY is...
