Wee Heavy Scotch Style Ale by Duck-Rabbit Craft BreweryGo buy this now. It's heavy on malts with a flavor like chocolate on dark fruits. Some toffee aftertaste. With some sweetness, it's better a little warmer than fridge temp.Pure beer heaven, if you ask me.[Edited on October 4, 2006 at 7:03 PM. Reason : ]

That's good, but the Baltic Porter is better...and I can't wait for their barleywineSupport the locals:Carolina Brewing CompanyEdenton Brewing HighlandMash HouseDuck-Rabbitetc.
10/4/2006 7:34:45 PM
That sounds really good.

Cottonwood:Pumpkin ale - Very tastyBrown ale - Meh, I've had much better. A little too fruity for me(even for a brown ale).Endo IPA - Nice as a change up.Edenton:Big Boss IPA - It's a good representation of the style but I can't have more than one at a time.Carolina Brewing Co:Nut Brown Ale - I can drink craploads of this.Pale Ale - I think it has a nice balance(actually prefer it to Sierra Nevada pale ale).Highland Brewing:Everything they make is really good.

i had highland's ipa when i was home a few weeks agoit was pretty tasty
10/4/2006 7:54:28 PM
Given the right conditions, I could most likely finish a 12 pack of CBC pale with ease...it's a great "drinking" beer
10/4/2006 8:19:24 PM
Big Boss IPA is quite nice
10/4/2006 8:20:39 PM
I love CBC. I'm lucky enough to work at a place that has Pale Ale and their seasonals on tap, there was nothing like finishing my shift and tossing back a few Summer Wheats or Spring Bocks for free. Carolina Blonde and Carolina Light (can't remember the name of the brewery, but they're in Mooresville) are also amazing.
10/4/2006 10:09:35 PM
I'm going to be in Raleigh for the weekend. Are there any good local seasonals that I should pick up while I'm in town? Is Edenton's Pumpkinhead out yet?
10/4/2006 10:28:57 PM
Yeah, that's out...as well as the Duck-Rabbit baltic porter. Cottonwood Pumpkin too. There's not much else as far as seasonals.
10/4/2006 10:33:07 PM
i had a left hand brewery imperial stout a little bit ago...one of the best i've had, so if you like stouts i'd try it. only place i've seen it is peace street market.
10/5/2006 1:26:53 AM
The Duck Rabbit Wee Heavy is a seasonal. There are lots of Oktoberfest marezens out right now, not sure if anyone local is doing that.Picked up some St. Barnedaus Abt 12 the other day, I'll be trying that soon. Also, Val Diu is an AWESOME belgian brewery. Everything they make causes me to have a mouthgasm.
10/5/2006 1:37:31 PM
^^ that stuff is great.... their milkstout is great too
10/5/2006 1:48:25 PM
Has anyone seen Mocha Java stout anywhere? They had a six pack at Peace Street Market once, but not anymore.
10/5/2006 2:03:41 PM
that beer tastes like golden monkey and is the ONLY DUCK RABBIT BEER I DO NOT LIKE
10/5/2006 2:08:22 PM
You know what I was unimpressed with?Rochefort Trappist 10Supposed to be amazing, but it was just kinda...meh.
10/5/2006 2:12:04 PM
^^I don't know which beer you're talking about, but there is not a Duck-Rabbit beer even remotely like golden monkey^The 8 was great, haven't tried the 10 but there's one in the fridge right now[Edited on October 5, 2006 at 2:13 PM. Reason : ;]
10/5/2006 2:12:29 PM
the "Wee Heavy Scotch Style Ale" tasted like it to mebut maybe its cause i was drinking ipa's before it.i couldn't hardly choke it down
10/5/2006 2:16:20 PM
Shameless Red Oak & Battlefield Black plug Weeping Radish is pretty awesome too]
10/5/2006 2:17:09 PM
Does anyone else microwave their beer?I'm being serious.Fridge temp is too cold for lots of craft beers. I usually pour mine in a glass and microwave it for 13 seconds. It warms it up about 10 degrees and really brings out a lot of good flavors.
10/5/2006 2:27:11 PM
no, but I microwave white wine all the time. The fridge is indeed too cold.[Edited on October 5, 2006 at 3:23 PM. Reason : o]
10/5/2006 3:23:11 PM
Unibroue's Trois Pistoles is one of my new favorites. So yummy! The various Chimays are great, too, but kind of pricy for 24oz bottles.
10/5/2006 3:58:20 PM
microwave? that's kinda funnyI usually just take it out of the fridge awhile beforehand. I've also got a small dorm fridge for beer that I keep turned up as high as it will go so it's usually not a problem.

For the IPA lovers, I suggest Victory's Hop Wallop if you can find it. I place it just behind DFH 90min IPA as my favorite IPA.
10/5/2006 5:43:34 PM
Mash House Hoppy Hour IPA is probably the best brewed in this state of those I have tried, so that too.
10/5/2006 7:15:47 PM
^^ both Hop Wallop and 90 min are considered "double" or "imperial" IPAs due to their higher alcohol levels and more malty character. For a true IPA, I would recommend Victory Hop Devil or Edenton's Big Boss IPA if you want something brewed locally. On another note, just got some "Surrender Monkey" Belgian Farmgouse Ale brewed by Edenton Brewing Co. in a 750mL wax dipped bottle. The had it at Whole Foods, but it's selling out pretty quick from what I hear.[Edited on October 6, 2006 at 1:37 PM. Reason : .]
10/6/2006 1:37:01 PM
for all practical purposes, it was gone the day it went on sale
10/6/2006 1:40:42 PM
Is there still some "Surrender Monkey" left? I might have to go get some.I also bought the last bottle of Fuller's Vintage from Whole Foods last week
10/6/2006 3:10:26 PM
not sure, but I don't think I've seen that in awhile
10/6/2006 5:34:05 PM
^^You could go down to Edenton's brewery off Capitol Blvd and see if they have any left. If they dont have any more of it bottled I'm sure they could hook you up with a growler full of it if there's any left in the tanks.
10/6/2006 5:55:35 PM
^^^oh shit, i thougt you were talking about golden monkey for some reasonWhole Foods pretty much ran out of Surrender Monkey the day it came in. Raleigh Times bar has bottles for sale for ~$15.00, more than double the WF price. At one point it was on tap at Horniblow's, Raleigh Times, and 42nd Street, and I assume they all still have it. I think a growler from Horniblow's is probably about $15.00.[Edited on October 6, 2006 at 6:00 PM. Reason : ']

Damn I only paid $6 for the 750mLI also got to try Highland's Imperial Gaelic the other night. That stuff was spot on.[Edited on October 6, 2006 at 6:04 PM. Reason : ...]
10/6/2006 6:02:48 PM
Holy shit, they have an imperial gaelic now?Where?I MUST HAVE THAT!
10/6/2006 9:45:32 PM
there wasn't much of it, and it was only sold at the brewery for one day a couple weekends agoi talked somebody into excanging one for a surrender monkey
10/6/2006 10:31:26 PM
^^ It's sold out at Highlands brewery three hours after it was released. One of my buddies had someone pick him up a liter swingtop of it.
10/9/2006 3:11:34 PM
Damn That's one of my top 5 sub-6% ABV beers...I can only imagine what it would be like in an imperial form!
10/9/2006 3:18:35 PM
had the dogfish head pumpkin on tap last night.not bad.
10/9/2006 3:20:13 PM

10/10/2006 12:23:02 AM
Having a Bell's Kalamazoo Stout from Michigan right nowAll their stuff is awesome, just wish it was available down here
10/10/2006 8:17:07 PM
i tried cottonwood pumpkin ale tonight and it was pretty good
10/11/2006 12:26:43 AM
didn't like cottonwood's pumpkin this yeartoo much clove or something, tasted mediciney
10/11/2006 12:52:29 AM
Shipyard has the best pumpkin ale this year, IMOI tried the Dogfish Head and it lacked...something in taste. Good feel, though.
10/11/2006 8:20:40 AM
^ i agree with the dogfishead lacking something
10/11/2006 10:37:54 AM
^ did you drink the 90 min before it??cause anything non double ipa is lacking something after drinking 90min(unless you 180 and go to a stout/porter)
10/11/2006 10:45:46 AM
I think most american brewers are afraid to add too much spices. I bet if a belgian brewer made pumpkin ale, it would be like drinking pumpkin pie. I would live off of that stuff.
10/11/2006 11:01:33 AM
i'm not a big pumkin ale fan...i like beer that tastes more likebeer....
10/11/2006 11:04:23 AM
^^^ ive had most of their stuff and yes the 90min makes everything else not as good.pretty much all beer isnt as good after it[Edited on October 11, 2006 at 11:05 AM. Reason : ^^^]
