a friend has an iPod mini that she says works, but whenever it plays a song, only the music plays and no words play. Anybody have an idea of what the problem could be? I tried searching google and apple's website but havent found anything yet.

i have a hard time believing that's an ipod problem. are you sure the songs sound correct in iTunes or another media player?

she's a liar...i suppose it depends on how the file was encoded, but i don't think that problem is possible with the majority if the music you'd download from itunes or whatever

hahah she's downloading shit from the muzak channel.. haha

yea i told her that i've never heard of it happening before. She swears that everything works exactly the same as before, and it is with every single song on her iPod.

That's not possible.

The only thing i can think of is to check the equalizer settings... Even so, if the human vocal range is so suppressed by the EQ settings, the music should sound funny anyway.

ok her story is now that she can just barely hear the words and almost like an echo and the music is normal volume. She also says it messed up like this after she dropped it.

Tell her she activated "karaoke mode"

That's the way the ipods work now. You buy music and words seperately.

If the headphone jack is damaged, it could effectively remove the center channel of sound which would contain the majority of vocals in a lot of songs. Or something.

^ No.The headphone is only left/right.Maybe your friend's hearing is going bad.

yeah, the music in iTunes and in the iPod is at best stereo (2 tracks) and at worse mono (1 track). even if it's stereo, it's just broken betwen left and right - not usually vocal and rhythm. That is, the vocals are on the same track as the rhythm, and therefore cannot be just ripped out. therefore, something fishy is going on here - your friend is just not clear on what's going on, or she is using the wrong tracks or something. but this is simply something that her ipod could not do.
