What is the best way to get slickdeals updates automatically as soon as they are posted?

I have an RSS feed via bloglines but it only updates hourly.

Are there other rss products that ping the servers quicker? Does slickdeals have anything on their site to email notify you when a new post goes up?

Ok, I didn't think there was anything out there.

So what are the options, a firefox plugin or a self coded RSS reader? I'm pretty sure I can start a process running on a box here at work and send emails via sendmail.

Oddly enough, the Hanns G monitor (my buddy has been looking to get a 19" lcd) is listed in the RSS feed via the beta2.0 version of the site, but not the standard version.

Its pretty rare that slickdeals comes out with a deal that gets killed within an hour...

interesting idea all the same tho.

Yea, I'm aware of the technology, etc. I'm just not aware of any syndicator that will let you set the individual time to check the feed to really low values. Does such a software exist, either web2.0 or on the client?

Put it in as a feature request for Firefox ... customizable RSS refresh rates.

Otherwise, I'd recommend customizing something and putting it out on sourceforge for the rest of us. Might even get a group of developers for FW / other "deal" websites.

Well, I found this script here

http://www.lathi.net/twiki-bin/view/Main/FetchRss

It took me about 5 hrs of fucking with our eleventey billion different perl 'installations' to just get at the XML:arser::Expat binary correctly.

From what little bit of debug code I stuck in there, I am able to read the rss feed I think, but I am currently stuck on getting it to send me an email via our smtp server so I am acutally not sure yet what all it is reading. I'll pick this up tomorrow.

I got the above script to work once I figured out my SMTP server. Also, I had to correct this line in the code (the one that is commented out)

#      my $to = $smtpref->{address} . "\@" . $smtpref->{host};
my $to = $smtpref->{address};

Because it was concatenating the target address (as set in the fetchrss.ini file on the addr line) to the smtp host. I suppose if you were running a personal *nix box using timewarner as your mail server, then the smtp host would work for both incoming and outgoing, which case it would be fine to leave the addr part of the fetchrss.ini file as the left half of your addy, and let it concatenate the server name.

For me, I have a real smtp server on the one hand and an exchange server on the other. So I enter my exchange server full address on the addr field and remove the concatenation like above and it works.

In the scripts otherwise untouched fashion, it sticks the "title" of the deal in the subject line, and a link to slickdeals (not the actual new deal) appears in the email body. It should be easy enough for you perl people to play with this and parse out the line with the actual deal in it and put that in the message body instead.

so like, just in case you care, it's considered extremely fucking rude to poll a web server or RSS feed with such a low interval

if every asshat that thought it'd be clever to poll a server every 30 seconds and generate an e-mail he doesn't check but once every few hours, did so, there wouldn't be a fucking site anymore, because A) that would effectively be a distributed denial of service attack, and B) they couldn't afford their bandwidth bills

even if you think you're special, you're not, so don't do it

[Edited on September 29, 2006 at 10:48 PM. Reason : that's why the feed you're using is set for an hour refresh, hello!1]

Hey Bakunin, is your life boring and that's why you post here with your comments occasionally? Because, generally speaking, they are worthless to me. I get sick of you "know it all motherfuckers" all the time adding your two cents to some shit like you're the be all end all of knowing what the fuck is going on.

Save the trite bullshit for some script kiddie without a clue and get the fuck out of my thread.

Please don't post in any tech talk thread I ever create again until you have some real advice to offer, not some shit we don't care about, and especially when you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

better yet, how about you just not post any threads in Tech Talk until you have something of more interest to the userbase than your latest trip to CPAN and which lines you commented out to achieve luser bliss? I don't think anyone that posted here doesn't think what you want to do is retarded, I'm sure the Slickdeals folk would rather you not do it, and there is not a god damn thing that's interesting about you fumbling around in somebody elses script to achieve this braindead end, so keep it plugged up your asshole and maybe the rest of this anal leakage (^, ^^^, ^^^^^) won't have to splatter all over the place as you backpedal up and down the thread looking for an out, a'ight?

Backpedaling? All I see happening in this thread is yet another ass clown, one of my many dick riders, with a sole purpose here to entertain himself with his next oh so clever post.

Tell me since you have all the cute answers fuck face, what exactly am I going to do with this script since you know me oh so well, and you know exactly what I am up to.

Because as far as I am concerned, you got on your "I think I know what the fuck I am talking about" high horse, at best, based on this comment taken in a most tenous form

Quote :
"to really low values"

Maybe we can have a 5 post battle about the semantics of this comment. Why don't you tell me what I was thinking when I posted it since you know it all dipshit.

Quote :
"so like, just in case you care, it's considered extremely fucking rude to poll a web server or RSS feed with such a low interval"

I mean holy fucking shit man. Tell me what "such a low interval" is you smug son of a bitch, since I stated in this thread how exactly I was going to use it.

What kind of dumb shit is this? Holy fucking shit. The more I actually take the time to bother with what you typed, I realize just how amazingly retarded you are. I was going to say more, but I mean damn Bakunin, I guess I'll just quit now.

Don't lock this Bobby, there are a few peeps that were interested in this, and I don't think a few comments by a douche factory that added dick to the discussion and a response by myself warrants it.

I'm gonna make a couple modifications to this guys code and offer it up here for people interested, regardless of what this anonymous clown thinks.
