"Herb Sendek By the Numbers
A look at some notes and numbers from Herb Sendek's Coaching Career

Sept. 4, 2006

A look at some of the numbers behind ASU head coach Herb Sendek in his 13 years as a Division I head coach:

.783-NC State was 281-of-359 (.783) from the free throw line in its 16 ACC games in 2005-06, the best mark in the league.

1-Herb Sendek made ACC history when his Wolfpack became the first team in ACC history to knock off the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament in consecutive years when it beat Maryland in 2002 and Wake Forest in 2003. Maryland was ranked second in the nation while Wake Forest was ranked ninth.

1-In Herb Sendek's 10 seasons, NC State led the ACC in scoring defense four times and held opponents to just 54.7 points per game in 1996-97, an ACC record.

1-Herb Sendek's NC State squad last year ranked tenth in the nation and first in the ACC in effective field goal percentage with a .550 mark, a computer ranking of how effective an offense is on each possession.

2-Twice Herb Sendek's NC State teams beat the nation's top-ranked team in the Associated Press poll. On Feb. 21, 1998, NC State topped North Carolina in Chapel Hill 86-72. On Feb. 15, 2004, NC State topped Duke 78-74 in Raleigh. Beating the No. 1 team within six seasons is not something that happens all the time. ASU has beaten the top-ranked team once in its history (1981), while Pac-10 schools USC, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, California also have topped the number one team twice -- in each school's history.

2-In the past five seasons Sendek's NC State squad was second in ACC wins. Counting all ACC regular season and tournament games, NC State won 53 games. Only one team (Duke) won more in that span.

2-Number of Final Fours Herb Sendek has coached in, as he was a member of the Providence staff in 1987 and the Kentucky staff in 1993.

3-Herb Sendek is one of just three coaches in the nation to have a first-round pick in each of the past two seasons along with Jim Calhoun and Lorenzo Romar. Julius Hodge was the 20th pick of the Denver Nuggets in 2006 while Cedric Simmons was the 15th pick of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in 2006.

3-In ACC only stats last year, Herb Sendek's NC State squad ranked third in scoring (75.8 ppg.), scoring margin (+2.1), field goal percentage defense (.434), three-point field goal percentage (.405), blocked shots (4.56 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.08).

4-Four times NC State led the ACC in scoring defense under Sendek, including allowing just 54.7 points per game in 1997, an ACC record. ASU has never held an opponent under 60 points per game since 1950. NC State also led the ACC in scoring defense in 1997-98 (62.1), 1999-2000 (63.6), and 2001-02 (67.8).

5-Coach Sendek's five straight NCAA tournaments is currently the second-best mark among Pac-10 coaches. Only one other current coach in the Pac-10 can boast five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at any time in his career. The five straight NCAA appearances tied a NC State record.

5-Four times NC State led the ACC in scoring defense under Sendek, including allowing just 54.7 points per game in 1997, an ACC record. ASU has never held an opponent under 60 points per game since 1950. NC State also led the ACC in scoring defense in 1997-98 (62.1), 1999-2000 (63.6), and 2001-02 (67.8).

5-Herb Sendek led NC State to the past five NCAA Tournaments, matching a school record.

5-NC State beat five top-10 teams on the road in the past five seasons.

5-Herb Sendek led his NC State teams to five 20-win seasons in the past seven years. In the ACC, only Duke (seven) had more 20-win seasons in that time (1999-2000 to 2005-2006).

6-Coach Sendek's six NCAA tournament wins is the fourth-most among current Pac-10 coaches.

6-Coach Sendek's six NCAA appearances is the third-most among current Pac-10 coaches.

7-NC State placed seven players on the All-ACC freshman team under Sendek.

7-In the past five seasons, Herb Sendek has defeated seven of the past eight NCAA champions. It knocked defending NCAA champion UCONN (1999 and 2004 champion) out of the 2005 NCAA Tournament and has beaten past champions Michigan State (2000), Duke (2001), Maryland (2002), Syracuse (2003) and North Carolina (2005) in the December of 2001 to March of 2005 time frame.

8-Under Herb Sendek, NC State is one of only eight teams has won a NCAA Tournament game in each of the past three seasons, joining Duke, Gonzaga, UCONN, Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina and Boston College.

9-NC State beat five top-10 teams in the past five seasons.

9-NC State averaged nine three-pointers made per game in 2005-06, the best mark in the ACC and ninth-best in the nation.

13-Herb Sendek has been a head coach for 13 years, tied for the fourth-most experienced coach in the Pac-10. Only Lute Olson (33 seasons and 71 years old), Ben Braun (29 seasons and 55 years old) and Ernie Kent (15 seasons and 51 years old) have more seasons of head coaching experience. Tim Floyd of USC (52 years old) also has been a head coach for 13 seasons.

15-NC State under Herb Sendek is one of just 15 schools to advance to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five seasons (2001-06), along with Alabama, Arizona, UCONN, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Pitt, Southern Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin.

16-NC State was 16th in the nation last year in free throw percentage, shooting at a .751 clip. ASU has not shot better than 75 percent from the free throw line since 1978.

20-NC State won at least 20 games in five of the past seven seasons. Only Duke had more in that time period among ACC foes.

22-Herb Sendek was 22 when he entered the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant for Rick Pitino at Providence.

33-When Herb Sendek took the NC State job on April 17, 1996, he was the youngest coach in the ACC at age 33.

38-Herb Sendek coached in 38 postseason games at NC State and was 20-18.

43-Herb Sendek is the second-youngest head coach in the Pac-10 at 43 years old. Only Tony Bennett of Washington State (36) is younger. Sendek has been the head coach in 412 games, Bennett enters his first year.

53-In the past five seasons, counting all ACC regular season and tournament games, NC State won 53 games. Only one team (Duke) won more in that span.

61-Number of Division I coaching changes for the 2006-07 season, and Herb Sendek ranks fifth in wins with 254 among the new coaches behind only Kansas State's Bob Huggins (567), College of Charleston's Bobby Cremins (457), Indiana's Kelvin Sampson (456) and Temple's Fran Dunphy (310).

75.8-NC State ranked third in the ACC in scoring in league games last year at 75.8 points per game. Washington led the Pac-10 scoring 77.6 points per game in its 18 league games last year, as only two Pac-10 teams averaged more than 70 points in league play.

Well if bleeding NCSU red makes you a great coach, someone sign me up now. Hell, I'd probably be a hall-of-famer because I love this university so much.

at nc state, we take care of our own.

amato is more of a man than herb ever dreamed of being. herb never stood up to the media and took the fight to them like amato does. herb is a weakling who will never win anything worthwhile. amato has proven he can rebound from adversity and salvage good seasons and bowl wins. he ends seasons on positive notes. when did herb ever do that, aside from the ONE sweet sixteen he made.

amato is as much an ambassador for the university as he is a coach.

herb was just a pussy.

All that bitching and complaining and putting the blame on "partial qualifers" on the other team is REAL manly.... All that showy personality with nothing to show for it is REAL manly....

What has Amato won again?? 4th place in the ACC??

Quote :

You mean like Herb and NCAA tourney bids??

Quote :

We've ended one football season on a really happy note (that could be compared to a Sweet 16)...and that was the Gator Bowl win. I hope you weren't really happy after the last two years. And only one basketball team can end the year with a win (two if you cound the NIT)...so it's kind of hard to end on a happy note.

You're an idiot if you try to compare Herb and Chuck to further your support of Chuck. And this alumni crap is bullshit. You have to win games...and that's it.

I wish Sidney Lowe the best, but I'd love to see the Wolfpack fans who "swing the big dicks" begging for Herb to come back.

I'm not a Chuck hater (as in I'm not calling for his head daily though I'm pretty sure at this point he isn't the guy who is going to turn the program in to a winner) but this is just stupid. He fucking made a mockery of my alma mater complaining about the partials. Herb was a much better ambassador for the University. He was always full of class and obviously very intelligent. His merits on the sidelines can be argued but that cannot be.

youve got to be kidding me, that was quite possibly the most idiotic thing you've ever said. Even if we didnt win a single game next season there is no chance in hell that anyone with a power position with the university would beg for an old coach to come back...the fans "who swing big dicks" didnt get into power positions by being pussies and not standing firm in their decisions

Amato is a notch above Mike O'Cain in terms of NC State coaches.

Give me Sheridan with these facilities any day over Amato (not to mention Holtz and Kiffin).

I think the bball team finished pretty high that year we made it to the sweet 16.

In football, I think we might have finished 9th.........and 4th in the ACC with a 5-3 record. We had one of the best QBs in the history of college football and got two 4th place finishes and a nice bowl against Kansas in hig senior year. Then we have last year's draft success and go 3-5 in the ACC and go to the Tire Bowl.

You have no argument.

We finished 11th in the AP Poll.

NC State has never finished in the top 10. (I think that was our 2nd time being #11, though)

And again... comparing our football and basketball programs is ridiculous. Chuck has a lot of accomplishments compared to the rest of NC State football history. Herb was a solid coach, but the expectations for basketball were and should be a lot higher than those of football

6 tournament appearances resulting in 6 tournament game wins

1 and done (average)

aside from all the stats that are overlapping/redundant, I don't know if ASU needed to hear these numbers...they're not great
