My really disgusting roomate put her banana's ontop of the fridge and forgot about them til now (It's been like 3 weeks). She also leaves food and dirty dishes all over the place. Needless to say I have now been bombarded by fruit flies for the last week. (But I'm kicking her out next week, haha!)I'm a neat freak and this is really grossing me out.Any suggestions on how to get rid of the nasty suckers?

you can make a trap for them...http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef621.htm[Edited on September 23, 2006 at 12:42 AM. Reason : 3]

They only live 2 weeks. Remove their source of food and they'll go away on their own.

^ yepno matter how bad they are, if you clean up they'll all just die in a few days ]

i have those bastards too

I found putting out a dish of mouthwash would attract them and then they'd drown in it.

that trap never worked for me, tried it several times

uh, what?

I have them too. Also caused by Banana peels (or possibly orange peels or apple cores). I probably should just get a trash can with a lid on it or a separate compost bucket to keep outside or something. I am a very neat person as well, but I can't justify taking out the garbage when it's only 1/4 full. I don't generate a lot of trash, so my food trash stays with me longer than perhaps would be normal.

It's either vinegar or wine with a couple drops of dishwashing liquid.. I forgot which though

glass of white wine--doesn't have to be a lot--within hours most of them dead.

we had em in our apartment a few years back and i made the trap, but used a slice of apple instead of banana. it worked pretty well.

clean up and spray massive amount of bug spray where the fruit flies are hanging out and they will be sure to go away

Clean up and get some Raid that's in the blue canister, that says flying insects killer or something to that effect. Takes em right out.

Works like a charm. No pesticides, and caught every single fruit fly in my house within 12 hours. Problem is no more.

fly sticky traps or fly papers work wonders on them

If you have a container, a piece of paper, and some rotten food (which you obviously do if you have said problem), why would you even consider buying something? That homemade trap was 100% effective.
