the only ones ive tried are smart dogs bc they were on sale, but they taste like nothing and have a gross soft spongy mouth feel.ive seen several different brands at whole foods but cant bring myself to try any more after that experience.recommendations?

oh man, if this were in chit chat I would have the best joke
9/7/2006 1:31:21 PM
do it anyway, i like good jokes!

Smart dogs are the best, IMO out of the veggie dogs out there. The key is adding cheese on top (if you aren't a vegan) or just condiments in general. REAL hot dogs don't really taste like anything either, from what I remember, until you put the ketchup and mustard on them.
9/7/2006 1:38:09 PM
I have been a vegetarian my whole life, so I've never had real hot dogs. That being said, smart dogs are fucking nasty. The texture is disgusting. I personally REALLY LOVE morningstar's brand. I think they stopped selling them at most Food Lions, but any other store has them in the frozen beakfast aisle with the other morningstar things.
9/7/2006 1:43:37 PM
I always buy the morningstar hot dogs. Boca also makes bratwursts that are pretty good.
9/7/2006 1:48:02 PM
a vegetarian hot dog takes all the fun out of hot dogs
9/7/2006 1:52:28 PM
^ive been a vegetarian for a couple years and i still dont know how i feel about veggie hot dogs. the ones i get taste and have a consistency so similar to real hot dogs it almost weirds me out. but hey, vegetarians gotta have something to grill on the 4th of july too.
9/7/2006 1:59:07 PM
I was raised as a vegetarian -- I'm not currenly one, but I still eat a lot of vegetarian products. I, personally, don't like vegetarian hot dogs a whole lot because the texture just isn't quite right. But I love love love vegetarian corn dogs by Morning Star Farms, that combined with the fact that the entire bottom portion of my freezer stores Morning Star Farms products leads me to believe that they would probably be your best bet for vegetarian hot dogs.
9/7/2006 1:59:51 PM
no .
9/7/2006 2:51:21 PM
I've never really had any that stand out from the rest. I have tried a bunch of kinds, but the hod dogs are always just kind of "meh"
9/7/2006 2:55:11 PM
I once ate an entire carton of boca burgers in an entire sitting (like a case from costco). Bad news
9/7/2006 4:00:24 PM
If you're a vegetarian shouldn't it be hot wrap or something, I mean it really defeats the purpose of being a vegetarian if you want stuff to taste like meat, something so highly dangerous to your sensitive lifestyle.
9/7/2006 4:02:47 PM
^Sensitive lifestyle? Plz to explain.
9/7/2006 4:06:19 PM
All veggie hot dogs are weird, but Smart Dogs were the best I've tried, if you can get over the weird orange color they come in.

Nathans all beef hot dogs with mustard and hotsauce

I haven't worked too much on finding a good hot dog, just because I didn't really like them as an omni. What I have been doing when we grill is to marinate some portabellos in balsamic and put them on a burger with some garlic veganaise. It's wonderful.[Edited on September 7, 2006 at 4:40 PM. 9/7/2006 4:38:25 PM

9/7/2006 4:40:11 PM
^ Well, I'm not an omnivore anymore, but I was. Most people in the online veg*n community use it to distinguish wether people they're talking about eat meat.

what is it with vegetarians trying ot change food. either you're a vegetarian or you're not. there is no reason to have a vegetarian hot dog
9/8/2006 2:38:48 PM
veggie dogs and veggie burgers are mostly useful for attending cookouts where the host doesn't want vegeterians to feel left out, and the vegetarians don't want to the host to have to go through the trouble of cooking up something entirely different. this actually seems to happen frequently.anyway, "not dogs" are the only way to go. you can get them at whole foods. i bet they're better than any hot dog, but i can't really confirm it because there's no way in hell i'm eating a real dog. whole foods sells about 10 other brands there too, but don't be tempted: get the not dogs.veggie burgers are fucking disgusting. i'd much rather just have a piece of cheese in a bun.
9/8/2006 3:21:42 PM
You don't eat hot dogs?

This thread prompted me to buy the Morning Star Farm dogs. My husband and I gave them a try tonight and they are okay. They didn't wow me, but they didn't disappoint me either. We'd be willing to buy them again, but we'll probably give some other brands a try. Josh says that he understands why they make corn dogs with them because they have a corn-like taste to them. My complaint is that the texture isn't quite right and they're not as flavorful as real hot dogs.

are there good hot dogs?
9/10/2006 1:35:16 AM
i hear yves are good?
9/10/2006 12:37:51 PM
i've had smart dogs & tofu pups. they are consistantly decent, whereas real hot dogs have more variety, but a real hot dog at its best can beat them both. i've had morning star stuff before, but not their fake hot dogs, i'll have to try one some time.

the Morning Star Farm Cheddar Burgers are extremely good. my husband doesn't like most veggie burgers, but he'll loves them because they taste fairly close to the real thing. we actually had them for lunch today.sometimes you end up with relationships where one person primarily does not eat meat (me) and another person who does (my husband) and you have to find something that you're both happy eating.[Edited on September 10, 2006 at 2:33 PM. i looked for the "not dogs" at whole foods and couldnt find them
9/21/2006 10:18:24 AM
My girlfriend bought Boca Hotdogs and I immediatly rolled my eyes. I actually don't mind Boca burgers but I just don't see how a Boca Hotdog could work. I suppose I will try them some time, are they decent at least?
9/21/2006 11:09:41 AM
we tried morningstar last week and they are pretty good (better than smart dogs imo, both flavor and texture), but it bugs me that they are frozen and you have to chisel them apart and they take longer to cook.tried yves - "the good dog" and they are pretty good flavor and texture, id rank them highest among any ive tried so far...and i tried the veggie kielbasa (from whole foods, forget what company), that stuff KICKS ASS. i was thoroughly impressed, even the casing has the "snap" to it you only expect from intestines...
