Do they need your bank account number as a reference? My friend is getting an apt. and it seems like a huge security risk. This is the first time I've seen that on a rental app. I usually let the apt. people see a copy of my bank statement w/ stuff marked out (and paystubs) and that is enough. Does anyone have anything bad to say about Cumberland Cove, Four Seasons at Umstead Park, The Links, or Indigo??

personal checks have the account number printed on the bottom

yeah and when you write a check at retail places, the clerk can secretly copy down your bank account and routing number and funnel all of your money away!! You wouldn't believe how many dumb old ladies we get at my work who are too confused to just order online, so they call in, have a book shipped from the warehouse in NJ to their homes...and have us write down their credit card numbers and expiration dates that are read to us over the phone...this information is usually passed between 2-3 employees before we get time to call the credit card company for a verification # and ring up their shipping order.anyways, maybe just call the person in charge and ask why they need it on the application, or ask them if you can give it to them separately since you don't feel comfortable with it.

That is highly unusual. Annual income, a credit check, and a security deposit are pretty standard and should be sufficient. I would ask why they need the bank account number, what to be used for, etc. Kinda weird it's used as a "reference" ... I'd give them my bank's phone number in that case if they needed to call.

They usually tell you just not to put it on the application.Cumberland Cove...will say for definite (as i've lived there)...DO NOT GIVE US YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER. (The application is outdated).

I live at cumberland cove and i have good things to say about it. i seem to recall that on our cosigners lease app for the first year they didnt make us put that info down, and I dont think i gave them my bank info either. Ask them about it if that's who you're talking about and i doubt they'll make you give it.

I don't think they can do anything with it.I mean, in order to withdrawal money, they would need an ID, or the ATM card

I would tell them to fuck off. I don't even like giving them proof of income.

Actually, to withdraw as an ACH all they'd need was a routing number and account number (found on any check). The catch is that they'd have to be a pretty big player to make ACH's all on there on I believe. I suppose big companies are always trustworthy....

I've seen this on rental applications, and I've also opted not to fill it out...if they really need the bank account number, they can find it on the deposit check themselves
