I’m shamelessly using this post to get the word out about Clearwire. Its broadband internet that is fast, portable, and affordable. It’s the same price as TWC, only difference is the modem can be taken anywhere in the triangle. http://www.clearwire.comPM me for more information about signing up
8/29/2006 12:48:54 PM
no
8/29/2006 12:56:30 PM
This is broadband in the loosest definition of the word. And, according to the website, the service is not yet avaliable in the campus area.
8/29/2006 1:43:06 PM
Thats why you have to PM me to sign up, or just to check it out. They arent officially starting their marketing campain until november, thats why the website says its not for sale yet, but you can still order through the sales channel. I can also demo the speeds for you so you can test it out for yourself
8/29/2006 3:09:58 PM
same price as TWC - not "production" readyyeah this is a steal - jump on it
8/29/2006 3:31:42 PM
I just said the ad campain hasnt started, its up and running just fine. Plus its portable, thats the advantage, not the price point
8/29/2006 4:41:44 PM
what infrastructure does this run off of?
8/29/2006 4:44:44 PM
What are the garaunteed data rates, and where is a raleigh coverage map?
8/29/2006 4:46:50 PM
my parents will be all over this since they can't get cable or dsl out where they live
8/29/2006 6:00:01 PM
how much wood could a woodchuck chuckif a woodchuck could chuck wood
8/29/2006 8:26:52 PM
i see no where the says a price
8/29/2006 9:59:45 PM
i'm assuming that if he says it's the "same price as TWC", it can't be more expensive than $39.99/month
8/29/2006 10:19:19 PM
to be fair, its a lot less expensive than other wireless broadband providers (assuming comparable performance)
8/29/2006 11:13:27 PM
uh, Nextel's wireless broadband is 34.99 a month IIRC
8/29/2006 11:18:13 PM
i thought nextel stopped that service after the pilot was up
8/29/2006 11:28:02 PM
nextel hasnt had that for over a year unless things have changedif you meant sprint, unlimited data with no voice plan is $80/month$39.99 gets you 40MB
8/29/2006 11:30:19 PM
Or just have a Audiovox Pocket PC, use the wireless modem feature and pay only $15 for the same connection...But that's just what I do when I decide to be geeky and there isn't an access point to leech off of.
8/30/2006 12:33:01 AM
$15 gets you gprs, which is very slow
8/30/2006 8:07:49 AM
how well does this work for a mobile application?does it roam without packetloss, etc? fast enough to stream mp3 audio and VoIP to a car?
8/30/2006 8:13:43 AM
8/30/2006 8:53:19 AM
is wireless broadband good enough for streaming or the occasional game of war rock
8/30/2006 8:57:43 AM
Ok, in order of how they were asked:This runs off of an infrastructure called WiMax, it broadcasts at a 2.5 ghz frequency. The guaranteed data rates are 1.5 mbs down and 256 kbps upThere are two price points. For half speed its 29.99 and for full speed its 37.99. Right now for signing up early you get the first two months of either for free.Nextel has stopped selling their service and it was not at broadband speed, it was barrelly at ISDN speeds.Sprint still isnt getting the same speeds as us and they are a lot more expensive. There is minimal packet loss experienced because there is a soft handover from tower to tower. TEST DRIVE IT FOR FREE AND BE THE JUDGE OF IT FOR YOURSELF.
8/30/2006 10:17:26 AM
EV-DO ftw.
8/30/2006 12:03:44 PM
i heard about WiMax a long time ago (i even made a thread about it)...never heard much after that (the article was referring to was talking about the development of WiMax as a service provided through a small tax increase by the local governments of cities - essentially high-speed internet, accessible even in podunk (wherever you get a cell signal) for a tiny tax hike of about $10/yeari thought it was cool and was disappointed when i heard nothing elsebut now i have, so i'm happy again^ EV-DO is by far the best high-speed cellular service technology available utilizing cell phones...but the plans are ridiculously expensive, as is the extra equipment you'd have to buy[Edited on August 30, 2006 at 1:02 PM. Can I use this from market to market? If I travel to Greensboro, can I use my same Clearwire access?
8/30/2006 2:56:18 PM
Yes you can use the same modem in any market accross the country. Currently there are 31 markets, by the end of next year, more than double that. THere are 4 or 5 new markets opening in north carolina next year.
8/30/2006 6:53:55 PM
Ssssssweet
8/30/2006 7:08:27 PM
^^ Right right, but can we roam with it? For example, if I have an account with Clearwire, can I go to any Clearwire serviced area without notifying Clearwire? Ultimately, can we even roam to other service providers?
8/30/2006 11:47:34 PM
Yes, you can roam with it on any clearwire tower nationwide without notifying clearwire and without any penalties. However, because Clearwire is the only company currently using this standard, there is no other competition to roam off of.
8/31/2006 9:08:43 AM
EV-DO for the win.
8/31/2006 3:49:34 PM
^^okay that makes this pretty damn sweet. And FYI, EV-DO fucking blows nuts in NC. It has terrible ACTUAL coverage.
8/31/2006 4:17:08 PM
EV-DO also has a terrible price tag
8/31/2006 4:31:02 PM
i can't wait for broadband wireless internet to be cheap and ubiquitous
8/31/2006 4:43:11 PM
Well this pricetag is pretty good
8/31/2006 5:15:40 PM
i have no need for this as i'm on campus, but my girlfriend is looking to sign up for it...i'll report back
8/31/2006 5:17:18 PM
Romulus gets commision for signing you up....lol. go to bby, they have it there, with better sign-up offers like gift-cards. their sales people have little training about it though. Yearly contract? on a cell-phone network? you bet. one year or two, required...[Edited on August 31, 2006 at 6:11 PM. Reason : ]
8/31/2006 6:11:15 PM
i don't care if he gets commission or not...he's been damn helpful to me, which is the point of getting a commission
8/31/2006 6:14:41 PM
will best buy people give me a test modem so i can find out how i like it at my location? i mean theres a reason he gets a commision, because he is being a helpful salespersoni mean im having a hard time finding reasons to switch from twc, but am seriously considering it because of his responses to my questions in pms
8/31/2006 6:31:06 PM
bttt, saw this service in action today...looks pretty solid to me. anyone using it around campus yet?
11/10/2006 10:01:32 PM
I havent used it yet but it looks interesting. Service is over 2.5GHz licensed spectrum. You can see their cell sites if you know what you are looking for - sector antennas about 4ft tall, usually 2 sometimes 1 small round microwave dish. there is one behind/near priscillas on western blvd, so coverage should be good for that side of campus
11/10/2006 10:39:37 PM
what kinda authentication do they use for this?
11/11/2006 3:00:37 AM
i'm currently using it...it was a little sketchy at first because they hadn't gotten the nearest antenna up at that point...within a month it was up and i've had 100% signal ever since...it hasn't gone out on me yet, i get solid throughput...honestly, i have no complaints at this point, it's been awesome
11/11/2006 10:31:11 AM
But can you game using clearwire?
