He starts by searching for a drummer for a show he's already lined up, and otherwise goes about the mechanics of self-promotion. He finds a champion in Sara (Seung-Min Lee), a radio DJ who sets her sights on a submissive but uninterested Alan and finds him a drummer. In his down time, Alan drinks and strategizes with his old friend Lawrence (Andrew Bujalski), a grad student, and Lawrence's girlfriend Ellie (Rachel Clift), a journalist. Alan endeavors to keep his shoulder to the wheel, while Ellie finds herself compelled by him. The attraction is mutual, but both parties are reluctant to take the next step.Starring Justin Rice of the kickass rock band Bishop Allen (http://www.bishopallen.com/), Mutual Appreciation looks like it will be a really good movie. It's got 8.0 on IMDB right now, and although it's fairly meaningless with only five reviews, it's got 100% on RottenTomatoes. It's directed by the director of Funny Ha Ha (2002), which has 88% on RottenTomatoes.Mutual Appreciation will be playing at Galaxy Cinema on Wednesday, August 30th at 7:15, and Saturday, September 2nd at 5:15. These are the only two times this movie will play in the triangle. If you live in another city, check out the showtimes at http://www.mutualappreciation.com/howcaniseeit.html.In case you aren't up on things, the Undiscovered Gems Series is a year long series of the best undistributed films that are out there. Previous selections this year included Four Eyed Monsters, which was very popular, and The Puffy Chair, one of the best movies I've seen all year. Each of these films plays just once or twice, so if you miss it you probably won't get another chance to see it.

Having an actor who is in a band in real life play his character's made-up band's songs in the movie and the songs are his real life real band's real songs BLOWS MY FUCKING MIND.
8/30/2006 11:39:46 PM
Hahahaha, yeah no kidding. And the drunken scenes were awkward enough for me to think everyone on set was just fucking trashed for half the movie.

9/2/2006 12:22:45 PM
But a girl once compared me to Pete Seeger* on a first date. Almost married her.[*I am hoping I remembered this part of the movie correctly.]
