Im taking them both right now. I think they go in quite different directions, so it really depends what you want to do. Im assuming you've taken 405 and 407, which one of those did you like more?

I've taken them both...520 is the grad version of 405, 521 is the grad version of 407. Which one is easier depends on the professor; 520 has more applications to other areas.

ive taken both 405 and 407. i did better in 405 than 407 but i took 405 in the summer and summer classes are always easier.

If you decide to go into State's PhD program, 521 is required. On the other hand, as an applied math major, 520 will help you more for other classes, like 580, 523, and 532.

I took both classes as an undergrad. I found that they were both helpful in future courses. However, different professors will have different courses. I took Putcha for MA521 and found it to be an enjoyable class, although a bit boring at times. I took Meyer for MA520, and I learned a great deal that has been applicable to the future courses, although Meyer can sometimes come across as a bit of an ass. Good luck with your decision.
