^ thats the card I am gonna getI get all travel expenses paid plus I get paid per mile when I am on the road for work...might as well get money back for it
8/23/2006 8:59:09 AM
Good deal.My old boss also worked as a professor at Charleston Southern and he got reimbursed for all the equipment the econ department bought there. He rocked an American Express Black card...the only time I'd ever seen one. I was like You can buy a country with that card.
8/23/2006 9:01:15 AM
my dad turned one of those down.I think you have to spend in excess of 100,000 a year on credit and have a good credit history (obviously) to get offered the card. You can't apply for it directly. [Edited on August 23, 2006 at 9:11 AM. Reason : ..]
8/23/2006 9:08:14 AM
just so you know, Dividend card is going away.If you apply now, you will probably get the letter telling you so a week after you receive your card. They have been sending these letters to card owners starting about a week ago. It says the new benefits will begin 2nd week in Oct.They are moving it to 2% for "everyday" purchases, but are adding utilities + some other category to try and make up for it.Makes the card pretty worthless, imho.
8/23/2006 9:08:15 AM
It makes a good point, a gas card would probably do me well. I'm going to be driving 30 miles a day to work and i'll get mileage reimbursement. might as well get like a BP card from chase or something.
8/23/2006 9:12:37 AM
^^why wouldn't you turn it down? The annual fee alone is a couple grand. You get concierge services + stuff like that with it, but I think it's mostly just to show off.as far as recommendations, here's what i got for ya:-mtvU card (by Citi): 5% (in the form of rewards points) for restaurants, movies, video stores, bookstores (hint: amazon counts as a bookstore), and record stores.-Starwood Amex: GREAT for frequent flyer miles, you can get a ticket on any airline + for less miles than the airline itself would charge.-Citi Driver's edge: gives you 3% on "everyday" purchases, but at the end of the year, you can send in a mileage report, and you get an extra 3% for every mile you drove. Wait, that didn't make sense. Basically, if you drive enough miles, it will double the rewards you've earned that year. So this one is potentially 6% on everyday purchases.that is all for now.
8/23/2006 9:12:55 AM
i have a chase card that i earn miles for any airline.no yearly fee, i dont know about the APR, cause i always pay it off.$1 per mile25,000miles = round trip ticket in the US.i dont know if its the best, but its free and has worked well for me.
8/23/2006 9:13:08 AM
yeah, i didn't ask him about it, but he acted like it was rediculous
8/23/2006 9:15:08 AM
seriously, bttt

what exactly are you looking for? Bonuses for new applications? long term rewards? free flights? cashback? specific categories? 0% balance transfers? WHAT IS YOUR PU RPOSE??!?!?be more specific.

umm.. I'm thinking a gas card may be a way to go, but i'm looking for decent rewards with decent rates, some sort of incentive thing to sign up, not really giving a shit about balance transfers, cause i don't have any. Simple question, who you like better, amex or visa? i've got an amex corporate, but it seems as though visa is a little more universal...
8/23/2006 9:47:05 AM
wtf is this shit. isnt their 15 other threads on this same thing?
8/23/2006 9:47:48 AM
I was gonna do a gas cardbut there are cards that aren't strictly gas cards that will still reward you on gas and other purchases
8/23/2006 9:47:56 AM
it really depends on what you wantsome offer gas rebates (for a few months)others offer hotel, airline, etci have a chase thats 0% apr forever and on balance transfers but thats itmy amex (looks cool cause its clear) gives me travel points. 1$ per point 7500 points= $150 off airline tickets. i just use it for everything and pay it off every month= free travel every yearif you have to pay an annual fee dont get itsomething worth noting: capital one will actually hurt your credit if you close your account. you have to let those become inactive for a year to cancel without penalty. look into it more before you buy. check out http://www.clarkhoward.com for some good free advice. and this is cool too:http://www.creditcards.com/index.php?a_aid=1004&a_cid=1000&a_did=1005

^acutally, having a Capital One card AT ALL will hurt your credit. It is because they do not report your credit limit, only your balance. So your utilization % goes soaring if you have even a $1 charge on there.you have a Chase with 0% forever? What are the terms (is it the 2 purchases/mo one?), and how do I get one? about annual fees: I pay $30 for my Starwood AmEx, and it is well worth it (to me at least). So I wouldn't say you should NEVER pay an annual fee. But in general, I agree.unfortunately the 5% on gas, groceries, and drugs stores seem to be going the way of the Dodo. The only one I have left in my arsenal is the Chase cash rewards plus card, and you can't even apply for that one anymore. You can get the AT&T Universal card, which gives 5% but in the form of rewards points. Which is really just as good, because Citi's rewards program kicks ass, unless you HAVE to have the cash. subtotal: Amex is great company, they will stand up for you if you have a dispute or anything like that. Also, most of their cards include great services like warranty extension (up to 1 yr), theft protection for 90 days, etc. However they're not universally accepted (although most places take it), so I would give a slight edge to the Visa.
8/23/2006 9:59:41 AM
if anyone wants to apply for a mtvU card (EVERYONE should!), pm me
8/23/2006 10:00:46 AM
capital one doesnt hurt it, it just doesnt help as much as it should. and it was reported on all three last couple times i checked my credit.

Capital One DOES hurt your credit.Your highest balance becomes the credit limit they report. So let's say your limit is $10,000. One month, you charge $1000. The following month you charge $600.All of the sudden, it looks like you are using $600 of your available $1000. That's a huge red flag for anyone checking your credit report.
8/23/2006 10:04:58 AM
thats weird cause the CapOne card was the first I got when starting to rebuild my credit. I now have three other prime credit cards.i pay off balances before the billing cycle ends though[Edited on August 23, 2006 at 10:06 AM. Reason : .]
8/23/2006 10:05:53 AM
Capital One is NOT prime, no matter what they tell you.Like Mr Grace quoted, your best move would be to charge a shitload to it one month + then pay it off.^by that do you mean that your statement balances are always $0?[Edited on August 23, 2006 at 10:07 AM. Reason : df]
8/23/2006 10:06:52 AM
yes, or close to it. and I know CapOne isnt prime, but that was the only company that would give me a card at the time.
8/23/2006 10:08:37 AM
8/23/2006 10:10:56 AM
^^ I wasn't trying to suggest anything or harp on you. It's just that you said you now have 3 other prime cards, just making sure you weren't including Cap One in that group
8/23/2006 10:13:02 AM
well i did it online and it is sitting in my wallet
8/23/2006 10:13:40 AM
you didn't answer my question. it gives a permanent 5% on everyday purchases? not some limited 90 day promotional rate?
8/23/2006 10:14:16 AM
also a good idea to have more than one cardshould you have an expensive purchase like a blown engine on your car or something that will put you over 50%+ of your credit limit you should split it over two cards so that you dont screw up your balance/available credit ratio
8/23/2006 10:16:24 AM
^excellent advice.or get an AmeX. They started me with a $2000 credit line, and it was up to $24000 in less than 2 months.
8/23/2006 10:17:31 AM
8/23/2006 10:18:55 AM
what about Discover cards? I've found one I can get a low 10.99% rate on, and 12-mo at 0% on purchases and balance transferI realize they're not as universally accepted as Visa/MC and even Amex, but for big purchases within the next year I think it'd be worth it
8/23/2006 10:19:52 AM
My roomate seems big on them, and he's a cheap nerd of sorts
8/23/2006 10:23:24 AM
I like the BP Card.Make 1 purchase, get a $40 gift card.Spend $1K on it within the first few monhts, get a $35 gift card. For the first 60 days:10% rebate on gas from BP4% on travel and dining2% on everything elseAfter that:5% rebate on gas from BP2% on travel and dining1% on everything elseSo $75 in free gas, plus fat rebates for the first 60 days, then decent rebates after that.
8/23/2006 10:23:35 AM
I have the Citi Platinum Dividends Plus card, and it's been pretty good in terms of cash back. I believe it's 5% on gas, groceries, and medicine, and 1% on everything else. Sometimes they'll raise that 1% to 2%, but I don't think they've done that since I got the card. The thing that sucks is that you're limited to $300 in rewards per year, so once you get $300 cash back, it turns in to just a regular credit card.To combat that, I just opened up another credit card identical to that, so when I max out my $300, I'll just start using the second card. I haven't yet spent enough to get $600 back.
8/23/2006 10:32:03 AM
^as someone said earlier... they are knocking it down to 2% instead of 5%
8/23/2006 10:36:13 AM
well that sucks
8/23/2006 10:39:31 AM
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457077&page=1&pp=15just use that and be done with it
8/23/2006 10:43:08 AM
i am also considering which one to get right now. ive pretty much decided im going to get discover, maybe hess oil since thats where i get most of my gas.
8/23/2006 11:05:33 AM
the thing i like about discover is that they will always send me random offers: "get $30 in rewards credit with your next purchase!". so i buy a pack of gum and reap my rewards. I think it's because I don't usually use my Discover, and they're trying to get me to.That BP card sounds pretty good. Might have to switch to that one when Chase inevitably shuts down the 5% train.

american express blue gives you 5% back on everyday purchaces (gas, drug and grocery) IF and only if you spend more than i think 6250 or so a year on your card. If you put all your groceries on there and all your gas, I have a hard time thinking you won't hit that mark.EDIT: 6500, even so. [Edited on August 23, 2006 at 12:37 PM. Reason : ..]
8/23/2006 12:35:19 PM
problem with Amex Blue is that I have so many other specialized cards (one for pretty much every occasion), that I'm not totally sure I'd be able to charge that much to it w/o missing out on other rewards. But yeah, it's a good "default" card if you're only gonna carry 2-3 cards
8/23/2006 12:36:52 PM
Two credit type questions for you guys:1) how many credit cards do you have?2) How many other open credit accounts do you have? (store credit, mortgage, car, line of credit etc)
8/23/2006 12:39:43 PM
1) about 12-15 open accounts2) car loan, student loan, a couple store credit cards.
