I'm looking for someplace where you can rent a steam vacuum or hire someone to do it for low cost. What's the best place?I'm also open to borrowing/renting one from a TWWer.I need it for Saturday, for a living room and an individual rug.Thanks.

if you own a dog or cat, you might consider buying one. it will pay for itself in less than a year.

Little known fact about steam cleaning: if you have a pet who has peed on the floor, the urine has likely made it down to the carpet pad and the bacteria remain there. When you get your carpets steam cleaned, they do a really good job of getting in there and getting them cleaned, BUT at the very bottom of the carpet and on the pad, bacteria are still there. That's kinda gross, but not a big deal, but get this...the fucking bacteria can "bloom" and literally grow back to the top of your carpet, leaving a stain. No joke.

yes, its the big red stand at the front (or sometimes on the cleaning aisle) that says rug doctor. Not as good as professional steam cleaning, but I used it when I moved out of my apartment and apparently the landlords were impressed enough to give me my whole deposit back

urine is usually sterile, unless you have UTI or bladder infection...now as for it sitting in the carpet padding underneath it could definitely cause the bacteria there to grow more.... but an acutal steam cleaning should kill most of them at least back down to the base level they were at before being peed on...bridget that sounds more like mold or mildew....]

yeah i just used one...worked great$22 for the machine, $10-$18 for the cleaner (i would get the smaller one, stuff goes a long way), $3 for the upholstery tools, $6ish for the upholstery cleaner

I took my grandmother to Kohl's yesterday and she bought a machine that was on sale for $70, usually costs $200. It probably doesn't work as well as the kind you can rent, but I used it on her carpet yesterday and it did a pretty good job. There was one room where her cat had peed on the carpet, and it seemed to take out the majority of it. It did a surprisingly good job of cleaning the "heavy traffic" areas.
