8/16/2006 9:34:18 AM
so..... it looks like we have 2 business major types who put up a bunch of marketing speek on a slick looking webpage with no actual content, and now they're looking for a programming monkey to do all the real work for pennies with the hope of hitting a home run somehow and collecting all the cash....gg
8/16/2006 10:02:33 AM
Gotta love when business majors graduate and realize they have no actual skills. And define "slick website", because other than the splash page, its a pretty mediocre website.Def agree on the marketing doublespeak though, I'm a bit impressed they managed to fluff the entire site like that

Its great that you all think developers make and break a business model. You'll soon learn that the "developers" take marching orders from the people that graduate with business degrees with "no skills". Know any hard developers that actually make meaningful production decisions? Developers are easily replaceable cogs in the corporate machine. I applaud the start up - more power to you.
8/16/2006 7:24:24 PM
Most people in positions of power at tech companies have technical backgrounds. They might also have MBA's, but they have "actual skills."
8/16/2006 7:36:50 PM
^ totally agree; but from a developer level prospective, I stand by my statement above.
8/16/2006 7:43:27 PM
I'm just pointing out that there are a lot of hard developers making meaningful production decisions.

i love noen. he called it a startup and not a startup in the same post!
8/16/2006 8:08:12 PM
Love you to Travis Just pisses me off seeing another "We can do the web better" group. I'd wager to bet they've never even heard of a focus group, usability study, performance metrics, web standards, or a myriad of other fundamental elements. The website is straight out of dreamweaver circa 2002, tables, font tags, not accessible, not compliant. So much for creative innovation.[Edited on August 16, 2006 at 8:20 PM. Reason : .]

I feel bad for the guy if he moved out to Silicon Valley and this is the best he can come up with

gbo, you may have some better luck posting on NCSU's Career Center website and CSC jobs board. You might also want to look up anything the BIT program at VT has to offer. We see posts like this fairly frequently (one or more a month it seems) where a business-oriented individual with a low post count to recruit technical folks.
8/16/2006 8:41:18 PM
hey whats wrong with tables? and isnt that why he is looking for someone thats more experienced in web development? guess i just dont get why someone would jump all over the current code.
8/16/2006 8:47:23 PM
^^I know a couple of people on the NCSU redesign committee, it won't have any problems being good. No-no words? Are you serious? Who is "they" that did VT's website? Using good practices doesn't ensure a great site in the end, but it's an absolutely critical part of the process for a successful site of any large scale.^Because they are marketing themselves as something they aren't. Their ENTIRE business is predicated on the abilities of a person that doesn't even exist in the company yet. That's why I'm jumping.[Edited on August 16, 2006 at 9:32 PM. Reason : and the VT website looks pretty darn good to me, at least the frontpage organization]
8/16/2006 9:29:58 PM
noen-- i looked at the site a little more, and i can see where youre coming from now... its almost like they dont have the first idea of how to accomplish the solutions they are proposing. it really wouldnt look so bad as just a model, but it kinda looks like they are already in operation and passing themselves off as something that they aren't. i'd be interested to see how they respond to technical inquiries.thats the only major problem i see, though. but without the extra person, it is a major problem - cause its all BS.
