im actually extremely interested in it, i might just start trying it on my own, but I wouldn't mind hearing some pointersI read somewhere that one thing people do is they sit (or lie) very relaxed, and they just let their thoughts flow, and instead of trying to control what they are thinking about they just watch their thoughts. Sort of like step away from yourself and watch yourself formulate the thoughts that you have. They also said that sometimes this can make you feel powerful, but you should avoid this feeling, and instead simply view you thinking you are powerful as just another formulation that you mind is creating. I was pretty interested in that technique actually. I tried it for a little bit, but I kind of got a little freaked out. I definetly want to try it for longer though. You just have to be committed to it, and I really think it could help a lot.[Edited on August 9, 2006 at 6:59 PM. For starters, DON'T lie down. You'll probably fall asleep.And I guess the methods depend on what you want to achieve. If you want to obtain clarity of thought or relaxation, Tai Chi will work, but you probably won't have any epiphanies, since you're concentrating on your motions.There are actually meditation aids out there, like tapes and CDs and what-not that will guide you through astral projection and stuff. Just relax, press play, and close your eyes....

I don't know much about this subject, but here's a starter I remember from my limited knowledge:Put your feet and knees on the ground and sit on your ankles. Count how many times you breathe. Do NOTHING but this, no distractions, NOTHING. Gradually increase the amount of time you do this. Do it in a private place, then a public place. Then go check out some books from the library.

Make sure you're sitting with your back straight. Get a pillow and stick it under your ass. Sit with your legs more or less so that your body isn't creating more tension on one side than the other. Full lotus is good for this, but I sure as fuck can't do it and you can't either probably. Just lay one leg in front of the other. Indian style isn't so good for this in my opinion.Make sure the weight of your body stacks downwards with you in a relaxed state. Your elbows should hang beneath your shoulders, etc. Your neck should sit straight, you can have your chin forward a bit if it helps. Look at yourself in a mirror, make sure that you aren't creating needless tension on either side, as it will break your meditation.Once all that pressure is centered upon your lower abdomen, breath in naturally, and let out a long breath. I mean, squeeze (gently and slowly) every last ounce of air that you can from your lungs. Take a breath inwards and then a few normal breaths until you recover from the lack of oxygen and repeat.Count your breaths. This is actually pretty hard if you're not used to it. Think of nothing except your count, the tension created in your lower abdomen from breathing out should create this. Make sure you're practicing buddhist abdominal breathing, not shallow chest breathing. When you breathe in, do so by expanding your lower abdomen. Breathe out by contracting it.Hope this helps

Everyone meditates differently. Some sit in an indian style and so "oooom", some do it through tai chi. the important thing to remember is being able to relax your mind more than you usually can. For instance, I meditate by twirling around a staff or staying underwater in the pool controlling my breathing. To me it's being able to focus on just one thing.

I do practice meditative prayer, and my only suggestion is to get out in the middle of the woods somewhere when the weather is nice and meditate. I have a spot about a 1/2 mile off the trail in Umstead State Park where I like to go. Hm...I need to get out there again soon...It's an old homestead in the middle of the woods. There's a big stone wall in a circle like it was a horse pen or something. Pretty cool to go out there, sit on that wall and meditate/pray.
