In my stride to become the ultimate fighter i decided to take a 3-4 of months of jiu jitsu, i already do boxing and it seems like jiu jitsu would be the perfect combination for close contact combat. Does anybody here have any experiance with brazilian jiu jitsu? Do you know of any Gyms around here that offer classes?

BJJ is a good idea to just round yourself out as a fighter in general. Any kind of grappling would, though.Anything that has a focus on defending yourself against (and launching) strikes on the ground, general presence/balance/reflex on the ground, and some solid technique for escaping locks and chokes will do. BJJ is just one way about it.There's a dude named Brad Huffman in Cary who teaches how to grapple. He can grapple pretty well, but he markets some bullshit Kung Fu in the mix with what he does that just isn't authentic. However, if you want to get a crash course in how to be competant on the ground he's a good choice. Other people probably know better places to learn how to grapple. Are you trying to learn how to defend yourself, or to learn how to fight within a specific format?

yeah thats what i am looking for, 6'1 , 210lb isn't Big at all in today's standards, and the only way to deal with those big motherfuckers is to take them down to the floor and fuck em up.the only school in Raleigh that i found teaching brazilian jiu jitsu is REMA.
8/9/2006 1:26:42 PM
Don't know about that school you'd have to ask.You want to learn how to deal with somebody with the maximum possible speed. Going to the floor should be your last option in a real street fight or unexpected confrontation. The reality of it all is -- you don't know how many potential attackers there are. Last thing you need is to be on the ground if a second or third guy comes up on you. You can never take a fight to the ground if there's more than one attacker.
8/9/2006 1:36:24 PM
you should just shoot them. that's the obvious answer. buy a really cool gun.

If you are going to get into BJJ you definitely want to go through Crossfit-NC in North Raleigh. Bill Dowey has trained under the Gracies and they are adding staff as the club gets bigger. If you want to be involved with MMA in Raleigh, I think Crossfit is the way to go. THe cost is like 150 a month plus about 20 miles rt and that is why I am not currently taking classes. I am going to approach them about holding a class on or around campus.
8/9/2006 2:35:22 PM
^ do they have a website? 150$/20 miles is not a problemI agree with you, there is no such thing as a fair fight, thats why I am more concerned with taking people to the ground than fucking them on the gound, I am not looking into this because i intentionally want to take the fight to the ground, but because in reality most fights eventually end up in on the ground, knowledge of close contact fighting on the ground and techniques to take someone to the ground is essential to someone like me that has only knowledge/experiance in stand up striking combat (boxing)

Best method to avoid a fight. Walk away.Best method of staying alive. Run away. Therefore = Join the cross country team. And learn how to run really fast and really long.Best method to be an ultimate fighter is definately bjj and muay thai (in UFC/MMA standards).[Edited on August 9, 2006 at 3:30 PM. Reason : extra method]
8/9/2006 3:28:39 PM
Muay Thai/BJJ is a great combo. What I'm suggesting is, you need to just learn how to be an aggressive, brutal motherfucker if you want to defend yourself on the street. When somebody attacks you, drop him as fast as you can and step back to see if he's got a buddy coming. The worst thing you can do is drop to the ground with him, ready to show off your BJJ -- his buddy's gonna slap you in the head with a bottle and you won't even see it coming. It's best to learn something aggressive that can keep you on your feet -- grappling is GREAT to learn because chances are you'll end up on your back or on the ground at some point, but don't run around trying to drop people to the floor all the time or you'll get your temple stepped on.

Some of you people act like we like we live in Bosnia and are going to get jumped on the streets every weekend. Do you people enjoy strolls down abandon alleys or something?
8/9/2006 3:52:26 PM
neck strikes and other 'weak' area blows disable someone fast and relatively non-permenant... though you can make them very damaging very quickly.... mcdanger is correct, drop the guy as fast as possible, be alert to surroundings....most of the predators that would attack you won't if they think they will be a fight...

^^^^It would be nice if you have powerful punches and a tough chin to stay up but the reality in street fights are most of the time a person goes down after the first meaningful punch (hence why you are always told if you are gonna get in a fight you better throw the first punch) so unless you are sure you are going to make first contact and knock the other guy out you better be versed in some type of grappling.[Edited on August 9, 2006 at 4:03 PM. Reason : one more ^]

How many of you have really been in a real street fight? Not some bullshit ego bar fight but I mean like some deranged mofo in an alley is like I'm gonna kill? Puhhlease.

8/9/2006 4:08:17 PM
I got no problem if thats your hobby. I'm an MMA fan. And I think its great way to get in shape and an awesome art when you fight another person in the ring. But you guys are talking like there is some sort of street war going on.
8/9/2006 4:12:07 PM
No, we're talking about what's effective in the format of getting jumped.Fighting is heavily influenced by format. What is your point? You suck at reading.

Sometimes it's not wise to turn your back on a dude that looks like he might attack you. Especially a dude you don't know.

8/9/2006 4:36:56 PM
good job man, i was thinkin about this a while agoi figured id rather brush up on my wrestling, take muay thai and kempo, and then for the ground judothose are the skills im most interested in knowing
8/9/2006 5:03:34 PM
I've thought about taking some mma for quite a long time. I just haven't gotten to it.
8/9/2006 8:13:31 PM
didn't read the entire thread so sorry if this has been posted. But Crossfitnc.com teaches it, I think you have to be a member of the gym itself though. It's part of the Gracie system, as in the Gracies actually come there every now and then and do seminars and testing. The guys who run it I think used to work at REMA and they are part of the Team ROC fight team.
8/10/2006 12:10:35 AM
im gonna start sparring with my police homies

thats what culbreth tells me...im thinking the problem with a BJJ club is getting permission to use a campus facility (the gym) to train in a sport that has a high potential for injury, leaving the school liable. Also, pay for training from an outside organization might get hairy, but im sure if the club just charge dues and then paid Crossfit trainers to come out and perform "workshops" it would be plausible to pass that by admin. again, thoughts and ideas on/for a successful BJJ club on campus?
8/10/2006 2:01:35 PM
^ shit if you wonna make one count me in, 50-100$ aent a problem meanwhile, i am gonna visit REMA for a free introductory class to get a feel of thier program
8/10/2006 2:04:43 PM
i think a big problem was using the judo club mats
8/10/2006 2:04:53 PM
were members of the judo club pricks about it or was it a time conflict or something?^^let me know what you think of REMA[Edited on August 10, 2006 at 2:15 PM. Reason : ^]
