okay, since the first "official" stirrings of our cars for this year took place today, i figured it's about time to make this year's thread since the derby is only a little over 2 months away. so far, here's what we'll be running this year:ford pinto wagon (4cyl. class)subaru gl wagon (4cyl. class)buick electra wagon (8cyl. class)ford crown victoria (8cyl. class)we may add a third big car if we run across something. everything except the buick wagon will require full preperation. the buick is a carry over from 2 years ago, all it needs is a transmission plus a few minor tricks/tweaks. a th400 has been obtained for trans replacement. i'll post pics of the work/shenanigans as progress is made.our junk is going to be dialed in this year with plenty of time to work on things, 2 years ago we threw cars together in a week and last year i was too beat up from a motorcycle wreck plus we couldn't find suitable cars at decent prices.anyone else competing? if so, post up.

last year was my first time in a demo derby and it kicked ass, even though i got my ass kicked. A guy i used to work with has an old ford station wagon he'll give me, just got to pick it up and start working on it. I learned alot last year and will hopefully make a better showing this year

i love demo, ivan you know this, and ive been going for years, but yall need to really find out some way to get past tech inspection to make it interesting.im tired of sitting in the stands with bubbas wife and the 10 trailer park kids
8/17/2006 9:22:31 PM
^yeah, we've got some tricks to try this year. plus some legal things we didn't have the time to do the first year, like putting steel front bumper on the buick wagon vs. stock aluminum one, etc.
8/20/2006 7:56:30 PM
i have a steel rear bumper off my range rover that you can have if you fab me a new one lol
8/20/2006 9:06:01 PM
Can you fill an engine block with concrete? How about lead? (lots of mass to dissipate heat and no worries about blowing the head gasket and ingesting coolant). Solid engine and tranny mounts?
8/20/2006 10:42:25 PM
i'm sure you could... no way for them to know really. dunno how well it'd actually work though, not to mention the extra weight. doing anything to lower the suspension isn't good. it's really damn amazing how long a motor will live with no coolant/oil/popped head gaskets. if you can get it cranked, they'll generally run for a good while. don't really want solid mounts either, you want one to be able to move around/make room for sheetmetal so you're not sheering holes in blocks and aluminum trans housings most i've seen people do is throw a length of chain on mounts to keep them somewhat in place.
8/22/2006 5:32:53 PM
ok, progress report:subaru wagon- nothingcrown vic- nothingpinto wagon- verified that it runs. threw a battery in it, some gas in the carb, and it fired right up. damn thing has been sitting for ~10 years. will verify how it runs through out the rpm range sometime this week hopefully after getting the plastic tank in. we've also pretty much stripped the body, all that's left as far as that goes is glass removal and some crumple zone tweaks.buick wagon- got it cranked and running. carb needed a little tlc from sitting a couple years, but this seasoned contendor is running strong now. burning oil pretty good, i think the valve seals are shot in it from sitting so long. it sat a few years before we ran it in the 2004 derby, then 2 years after, so i'm sure they're not happy. runs damn strong though, drove it around the yard some in 2nd (only) gear. got some fresh (or at least ones that hold air) tires on, massaged the fenders back out a bit, and pulled it in the shop in preperation for swapping in a good transmission.[Edited on September 26, 2006 at 8:49 PM. 9/26/2006 8:47:54 PM
nothin much today, didn't have alot of time. just yanked the rims/trashed tires off the pinto so i can get some decent tires i have swapped on tomorrow.
9/27/2006 7:42:49 PM
Oh, you mean MY tires? Nice rack of shit on your truck, btw. lol
9/27/2006 8:49:42 PM
^uh, no... i mean MY tires. i'm just letting you drive MY car (until i get some $$ bitch) [Edited on September 27, 2006 at 8:56 PM. Reason : .]
9/27/2006 8:55:28 PM
I believe the last 2 derby cars technically belong to ME, including the Buick wagon. But I'll let you have the battle wagon in place of the $$$ I owe you.
9/27/2006 9:14:29 PM
no, i believe technically they belong to starr electric company...i'm sure they wouldn't mind us dropping the buick off there after it's dead.
9/27/2006 9:22:35 PM
Um, shit. damn. amscray!
9/27/2006 11:38:59 PM
small block olds valve seals, especially in the 80's, were total crap. new ones are like 22 bucks.
9/27/2006 11:48:06 PM
word. doubt it'll be worth my time/effort/money, especially not knowing that's definitely the problem. could easily be something else from the abuse it's already been through. hell, the thing was a taxi before we got it. we'll just make sure it's full before it goes out i guess. not like it has to run that long.
9/27/2006 11:53:48 PM
shit i drove my olds for YEARS with shot valve seals. it was a bitch at the drive-thru. even with 12psi warm oil pressure that engine would have lasted a lot longer if i hadnt of ran it out of gas running flat out one night. it overheated on the side of the highway and it wasnt ever the same after, started tapping. finally dropped a valve and obliterated a piston.
9/28/2006 12:17:23 AM
nothing really today... was gonna mess with the pinto a little, but i didn't have time to pick up the fresh wheels/tires after work. so... i settled for giving the subaru a hot lap around the block since it hasn't been started/driven in a while. got priceless looks from the neighbors as usual. i hope to have the transmission in the buick wagon and the pinto mostly finished by the end of the weekend, but we'll see. i'll at least get some pics up of everything.i also located another wagon for the fullsize class that i may pick up... still debating.[Edited on September 28, 2006 at 7:09 PM. 9/28/2006 9:32:14 PM

9/28/2006 9:46:17 PM
perfect, cause two weekends before and one weekend after i will be wheeling my axles off.
9/28/2006 9:51:06 PM
cool
9/28/2006 9:53:58 PM
i should talk the rover owners club guys into taking the cnc4x4 recovery duties
9/28/2006 9:55:04 PM
pretty sure they'll be doing it as usual. a guy i know in cnc who usually heads that up mentioned talking to the derby people this week.
9/28/2006 10:15:37 PM
worked on the pinto a little more today. got the following accomplished:-good wheels/tires installed-removed all the glass except the winshield-removed all the tabs that held the trim on-removed the gas tank-hooked a temporary gas can up and confirmed it would run well throughout the rpm range, and that the transmission works. runs/shifts nice, i was quite impressed. after sitting for that long, it still had a rock solid idle and good throttle response. no bogging or anything anywhere.
9/30/2006 9:45:42 PM
long live the pinto, dad had one way back in the day that ran for close to 300 k, until the camshaft lobes wore completely round and it wasnt worth fixing, hell it was still running with less than .125 valve lift
10/1/2006 9:00:52 AM
die pinto die
10/1/2006 11:09:28 AM
Shit, it's going to kill everything out there.
10/1/2006 11:15:18 AM
hell yeah, i've got a feeling it's going to spread alot of hatred and discontent to the 4 cylinder class. i think it might be our horse to the championship.headed to the parts store to get some junk now. then back to work on it some more, i'll get some pics today.
10/1/2006 12:50:45 PM
aight, pinto for today:-gas line run inside-trailer hitch removed from rear-mechanical fan removed-passenger seat removed-exhaust removed-finished painting/numbering-removed winshielddrove it around the yard some... it's a slow bastard, but fast enough it should give some decent hits. things left to do on the pinto (that i care to list here):-weld rear differential-relocate battery-fabricate sheetmetal gas tank shieldplan on dragging the subaru out of the woods tomorrow and starting on it. i got some pics today, just gotta find my upload cable and i'll post them...
