Is there anyway I can catch him? I think he uncapped his cable connection, and it's fucking hurting people around here.

if you know he's doing it, you've already caught him

Man, I wish preschool wasn't closed on sunday, get out of techtalk, you two (too?).

I need someone perceptive in this area.

I don't even know how to approach this, Qnt. I need some kind of way where I can see how much his ul/dl speeds are, of course that would probably be illegal to watch that from afar.

just call TWC or whoever your provider is. I'm sure they have the tools required to detect any unauthorized behavior

you cant. you can, but YOU cant. call the cable company if you think hes doing something illegal. they will either catch him and thank you or, more likely, laugh in your face

why would they laugh? and if they do, and it's affecting your service like you said it is, schedule an appt for a tech to come fix it. and if fixing it requires catching this other dude at whatever he may or may not be doing, so be it

because he doesnt have any clue what he is talking about. you cant "uncap" your cable anymore without getting quickly noticed.

not only that, theres NO way one person uncapped maxing out his connection will affect the neighborhood or any individual user.

i love how people have such simplistic views of complicated things

Just call TWC and say your service is slow. It probably has nothing to do with your neighbors and everything to do with a crappy cable. Or it's all in your head.

That statement is patently untrue.

Someone needs to brush up on resource planning.

not resource planning but how a lot of the apartment complexes and even time warner have a bottleneck for an area.

First do this test http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (Click the start button under free test)

It's not great but it's free. It'll give you a decent idea of your speed. For instance, mine is

4.4 megabits per second

Communications 4.4 megabits per second
Storage 531.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 1.9 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

If your subjective rating isn't good or better then call Time Warner. Tell them you're having connection speed issues.

As with most TechTalk threads, this one starts out with a poorly organized/incoherent statement and continues that way through several posts.

firm, describe to us what exactly the problems you are having with your connection. When did you first begin to notice problems with your connection? Why do you think it has to do anything with your neighbor? Etc. details.

Not ONE person mentioned to ACTIVATE THE SECURITY ENCRYPTION. At that point neither your neighbor or anyone else for that matter will be able to "steal" bandwidth.

End of problem.

google.

theres tons of resources out there on setting up your own tftp server and proxy.

^^same for you gargs, the "cap" on customers is not one of necessity, its so timewarner can upsell future service.

if i remember correctly, with the old modems, you could tell it to look for the config info on the ethernet instead of the cable, so you could program it to have no bandwidth limits

then they changed the newer models so you cant do that anymore

^^maybe you havent noticed how tw now offers "premium" rr service? or "business class" service?

^ you can still uncap your connection, but they can tell pretty quickly when and if you do so.

not everyone subscribes to business class and even then, an uncapped modem does not distinguish.

I uncapped a friend's modem for him using the TFTP/Ethernet hack on a SB3100 back in the day... this was less than 2 years after they had rolled it out where I lived, but even then they still shut his shit off within 24 hours. I seriously doubt that your neighbor uncapped his connection and has gone unnoticed long enough for you to post this complaint, probably your roommates are downloading a lot of porn and that is why your connection is slow

yep, but the bandwidth thing just isnt true.

if you are in a complex with a TON of people, your bandwidth will suffer. but the actions of ONE user, capped or not, is not going to have any effect on your connection.

the surfboard modems twc gives out only have an 8.9mbps theoretical limit, even if it was uncapped, it wouldn't matter. your line has so much unused bandwidth its ridiculous. really, you're just fuckin up and runnin your mouth

ok I didn't know about the therotical max of "twc modems"...but you could always use your own modem.

no you couldnt because it wont authenticate, and if you proxy the authentication, they catch it and block you.

not to mention they monitor bandwidth spikes anyway to prevent abuse. I'm tellin you this stuff is all hogwash, you havent been able to abuse the cap limits in YEARS.

keep trying to insult my intelligence with your little preschool statement. when you figure out how to get your own sentences right, then come back with a response. you're totally freakin ignorant to the topic, yet you say you know this guy is stealing bandwidth. you still haven't explained how you know this. monitoring his crap would almost have to be invasion of privacy, call the cable company.

Can't use your own modem. TWC doesn't allow it anymore. You have to use 1 of 5 Motorola mdoels or 2 others i forget.

Don't worry about theorectical limits of cable. Do the test I gave you, if you aren't getting a good rating then there's a bunch of things it could be.

Here's a couple questions for you.

1) Do you roommates use bittorrent. Most people don't understand that it's not the total speed of the download but how many connections. Bittorrent, depending on the client can have 50 simultaneous connections from that many users at the same time. Not only is this resource intensive but it's also a hog on your bandwith. I don't know enough about networks to explain this well, perhaps someone else can

2) Do you have a router? Linksys and US Robotics are notorius for lagging up. Try a restart and test your connection

Now if neither of these applies to you call up time warner and they'll send out a technician.

i'm using my own modem right now for RoadRunner..

most cable modems have limits of 38Mbps down, 30Mbps up. Some can go as high as 52Mbps

Bandwidth limit of coax is based on the network.

I wouldn't say its impossible to uncap - but maybe hard and even harder for your neighbors to see an impact on their own bandwidth.

I would say that the way they catch these things is when people abuse the service. Top users of bandwidth get the phone call from TWC. I bet if you did not make it apparent that you were abusing the service, they would not know for a while.

I have looked this up before, but from what I understand, DOCSIS limits downstream around 40Mb/s (depending on DOCSIS version) and this is divided among a few customers. Most cable modems physical limit is around 10Mb/s. The speed pulled from a neighbor depends on a lot of things - current DOCSIS implementation, physical limitation of cable modem, and how many neighbors are sharing upstream/downstream channel.
