So I go to get in my car (1997 Saturn SL1 5spd manual), turn it on, put the shifter into reverse and I hear a POP. And now the shifter can just roll around anywhere. Any idea what just happened? Im hoping it was just a cable break and not some catastrophic shit with the transmission.Any advice, diagnosis tips, repairs would be greatly appreciated. I would be out monkeying on it right now, but I seriously fucked up my right hand today and it's pretty much uselessalso, anyone willing to take a look at it tomorrow so i dont have to monkey around with one hand, ill gladly drop some cash for you [Edited on August 5, 2006 at 9:00 PM. sounds like a cable problem to me, something probably just broke where a cable is attached to the linkage or the shifter. pretty unlikely the innards of your transmission suddenly dissapeared. [Edited on August 5, 2006 at 9:10 PM. Reason : *]

wasn't there a thread about this a little while ago? Isn't this a common problem on those cars?

from talking to the tow truck guy last night it is, he used to work at the saturn dealership here, thank god, now to try and fix it with one hand

well its a fucking 2 dollar part that i can only get from the dealership and of course they are closed on sunday

and of course the dealership only sells the part as part of a 180 dollar linkage kit, and the dude KNEW what i needed and told me to try ebay. Apparently this is a known defective part on the whole damn series (10+ years) and theyve never admitted to it

There are a million different ways to nigger it back together.Interestingly enough, I'm picking up a new shifter cable for quagmire02's car...his came apart at the tranny.
