I am trying to diagnose what our problem is.

Our modem is currently in our laundry room. That is where the cable modem is hooked up and can be connected to any of the three rooms via ethernet. (What kind of product do I need to take the ethernet cable coming out of the modem and split it three ways? (for the three jacks))

If you are in a bedroom and plug your computer up to the ethernet jack in the wall you should be connected to the internet, however we are not. One of the bedrooms works, another bedroom received signal at one point, and mine just has very weak signal; however, if you plug the cable modem directly into the cable jack in my room, and I hook it up directly to my computer that way, I get signal just fine.

This leads me to believe it could be a signal problem? I don't know a lot about it.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is what i gathered: Right now the cable modem is in the laundry room, there is a piece of coaxial cable going into that from the cable jack and there's an ethernet cable coming out of it. So from there you're just plugging the other end of the ethernet cable into whichever computer you want to use at the moment?

I'm assuming you didn't have the ethernet jacks installed into the rooms, they were already there when you moved in? First off, you will need a router if you don't have one already. Second, find out where those wall jacks run, you'll need to make sure they're actually connected. Once you find those this is what you'll do: Coaxial cable from cable jack to cable modem, Ethernet cable from cable modem to router, ethernet cables from router ports to ethernet jacks (not in the rooms, where ever the other ends are). Then you can just run ethernet cables from the computers to the jacks in their repective rooms.

A typical setup in this situation (as duro described) would be:

Cable Modem ==> Router (which acts as a 4-port splitter)
Router Port1 ==> Computer A
Router Port2 ==> Computer B
etc.

With the jacks in the wall, you would need to INDIVIDUALLY run cables for each port through the wall to the appropriate room from the laundry room. OR, you would need to contact your landlord/management and ask how the ethernet ports are supposed to work. OR, the easiest solution given how far apart the computers are would be to purchase a wireless router and some wireless cards for the computers.

sounds like u-house

they have all the cables coming to a terminal block

there are two jacks in each room and two in the living room

they provide a hub for everything to work

haha I feel like such a dumbass.

I didn't know the "splitter" was called a router.

I installed a wireless card in my computer last week, and I am trying to convince my roomates to get a wireless router now.

I have fallen so far from technology. I feel sad haha.
