Suggestions? My top choice is a 92-95 Civic VX, which is rated at 48-55MPG, but can't seem to find on on either cars.com, craigslist, or autotrader.Any other economy cars with similar numbers that you can think of, or other places to look? The only important factors are fuel economy and reliability. This is pretty much just to get to work and back. It's a waste of money for me to drive an SUV to work and back every day. The gas savings alone will pretty much pay for such a car within a year or two.

Older VW jetta or rabbit TDI?They aren't always cheap though.

^^ "only" 35MPG hwy... lots of civics in the mid 30's range, trying to find that elusive VX.^ Yeah, a TDI would be nice, but it's nearly impossible to find one in the 2-3k range unless there's something wrong with it. We have an '05 TDI already, but the wife gets that one.

i thought it was fairly odd that you bought a vw tdi for your wife in the name of fuel efficency at the same time you took hold of a 4runner.

hmm the civic VX... does that have the 1.5 liter? is that why it gets such good mileage?

WTF!!! Is this

I've been thinking about this though: the reason many of us with office jobs need A/C in the summertime is because nobody wants to see and smell you after sweating in the car for 20 minutes on the way to work.

a tercel is 2000lbs with a 1.5L motor, I have a hard believing they get anywhere less than 40mpg. there's also the 3cyl geo metro

I never realized a little bit of mileage could mean so much.

back in europe, my dad had a 1990 mk2 1.3L golf diesel, 54hp. damn thing would run on anything. gas was so dirty over there and people sometimes put water in it, to increase volume. nothing bothered it. it would get constant 5L of diesel per 100km in city/highway mix. dead reliable.

nah325i had a mk2 golf diesel that had a shitload of miles.. 500k-600k. something like that.
7/31/2006 3:02:04 PM
well it's no wonder 60% of all cars in europe are diesels. it's a damn shame we dont see some of the upper echelon diesels here in US. would love to own new BMW 330d. All of them are torque monsters and get well past 30+mpg on highway.

The VX also has a VTEC engine optimized for fuel economy, as opposed to the EX's VTEC designed for a wide powerband.
