it's a good wich for occasional use, but kinda slow. It will get you unstuck. And a winch bumper can be fabbed for less that $200 if you don't wanna make a fashion statement with it.the Warn m8000 is a great buy and probably the best for the money if you find them on ebay.[Edited on July 28, 2006 at 12:25 PM. get a chain and a comealong nigga. all high class and shit with a winch

After having used a chain, rope, jerk straps, and a come-along...I can honestly say fuck all that noise. If you are going to find yourself out in the sticks or on the trail a lot, a winch is a fucking godsend.get as much winch as you can sanely afford, and consider 8000 to be the minimum you'll want. Ideally, your winch should be rated for roughly twice the weight of the vehicle you're putting it on, so in your case, a 9000 or 10000 might be better. You can do a lot with a little if you use a snatch block (you can actually use two for even more power), and provided you (a)have enough cable on your drum and (b)the cable is rated to handle the load.Planetary gear winches are faster, more efficient, and quieter than worm gear winches. Worm gear winches, however, have the advantage of being self-locking without requiring a brake (which a planetary gear winch HAS to have)...but they run hotter and noisier, and waste more energy due to the parasitic nature of the worm drive.Warn, Ramsey, and Mile-Marker all make good winches. I believe all their electric winches these days are planetary drive with built in brake...the only worm gear winches I've really seen have been the Ramsey hydraulics--good winches, but LOUD.

warn 8274 best winch ever hands down. planetary gears, 150' cable 8000lb. awesome[Edited on July 28, 2006 at 3:45 PM. Reason : you get what you pay for. mm okay]

^Dad had an 8274 on his Jeep CJ7 back in '78-'84. Burned the motor out of it a time or so, he used it so hard.

Depends on your endurance. I've soaked myself with sweat on a cold winter evening winching out my Integra. Now you figure out how much winching you'll do with a big truck.Oh, and I'm a big fella with a decent amount of muscle.

oh goodness. which mod is better.. locker for rear or saving up for winch>?
7/28/2006 4:17:35 PM
you will get stuck regardlesssoget the winch
7/28/2006 4:26:58 PM
true dat
7/28/2006 5:28:47 PM
yea...the 8274 is the best for electrics, but they are expensive and not all bumpers will accept them. The 9000 Warn without the integrated solenoid is great, relatively cheap, plenty fast, and low profile. Since you were looking at the the cheap milemarkers, I would think that a 8274 is outa your leauge. and yes, you will get stuck, with or without lockers.

northern has some decent prices on warns and mile markers
7/28/2006 11:03:49 PM
i want you to get a hand winch. or better yet, get two little electrics and some snatch blocks and maybe maybe youll fuck up and lose a hand or two. then you cant post so much.

i wouldn't go for the milemarker that's on ebay. the 8000's were poorer quality than the first batch (9000, they later dropped em down to 8000 to my understanding) and they had some quality control problems. that said, get a warn if you really plan to use it. like it was said before the 8274 or the newer version, the 8274-50 would be great choices, just bulky and would possibly need fabrication/modification of a bumper. and w/ a truck as big as a ram i'd try to get as big of a winch as possible.

^^I'm liking that bumper a lot.
