This is a weird request, but are there still any good chat rooms that aren't full of people soliciting web cams? I mentor a high functioning autistic kid and he likes to talk online because it doesn't make him nervous. (Not being able to read facial expressions puts him on an equal level) We looked at yahoo messenger chats but they were just bots soliciting webcams. He is smart enough that we aren't worried about him talking to strangers and I don't think he has any interest in "cybering".

IRC is a good suggestion, but, and this goes without saying, check out the rooms pretty thoroughly before you turn him loose on it. A lot of IRCers are the same sort of evil fuckers that browse TWW.
